Child of God
July 4, 1947 ~ August 3, 2018
After 3 plus years of courageously battling
kidney disease, diabetes and just recently,
cancer, Ron was called to his heavenly home
so he could rest and be made whole again.
If you knew Ron, then you know it was fitting
that he was bom on July 4%, he was quite a
fire cracker! He was general manager for
Brown Transportation for over 40 years and
would still be there if not for his illnesses.
He loved working with children and refereed
high school sports.
When the first Relay for Life was held at Park
Terrace School in Gloversville, we wanted
our church to be represented. At that time
you had to have someone on the track from 6
‘p.m. - 6 a.m., we were very small in number,
so it was Ron who walked that track all night
‘so our church would be represented. He
never complained.
Ron served on our church council and was a
delegate at the Synod Assembly for several
years to which he offered to be the
designated driver, quietly listening to all the
chitter chatter from the ladies he drove! His
most important jobs though were to supply
the potato chips for the covered dish dinners
and be the vegetable man at NOAH!
He wanted to be active in our chicken BBQ's
and was delivered by van to the last one we
had here at the church. He was exhausted
but never slowed down. He would buy 20 or
more dinners to pass out to the nurses or
anyone else who could use a dinner. He was
quite a tease but we all loved it!
Ron is survived by his soul mate,
Cheryl Huxhold, his son, Sean and Lizzy, his
grandson Brady, sister Valerie and brother-
in-law Ed, nephew Eric and all of us here at
Grace Lutheran.
You will be missed by all Ron.
We pray your family will find comfort
knowing you are being held in the arms of
our loving Lord.
This year’s Christian Education program will be
following a different format. Because of the .
disparity in ages ofour students, the number of
teachers we have and low attendance, our
Christian Education program will be meeting
once a month beginning in September. The
good part about this is that it will now be a
program for the ENTIRE congregation, One
‘Sunday a month, we will be presenting an event
geared to a specific idea, theme or area, In
September, we will be working with music. In
October, we will be thinking about families. In
November, we will be looking forward to
something about the military and in December,
we will be presenting our Christmas program.
NOW HERE'S THE BEAUTY! Everyone, and we
mean EVERYONE, is invited to join us for these
events. There will be music, activities and
snacks (what could be better?) Anyone
between the ages of 1 month to 104 is invited to
attend. So please join us on:
9,201 9:
for our first “GRACE” LIFT” event. What's a
“Grace” LIFT? Grace Living in Faith Together.
Come and check it out!
Grace LIFT events will take place on:
October 14, 2018 (Families)
November 11, 2018 (Military)
December 16, 2018 (Christmas program)

TO: PARENTS OF SUNDAY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Dear Parents:
Because of the disparity in the ages of our students, low and infrequent attendance, and the number of
teachers we have, the format of our Sunday School program will be changing this year.
Sunday Schoo! will now be known as Grace LIFT (Living In Faith Together) and will meet once a month. This
program will be geared to the students, their parents and families, as well as the entire congregation. Our first
Grace LIFT event will take place on September 9" at 9am.
Because of the nature of the study taking place, confirmation class will still take place every Sunday.
Confirmation parents will also be getting a separate letter about the expectations in that class.
Grace LIFT events will take place on October 14, 2018, November 11, 2018 and December 16, 2018. Youth
Sunday will take place on these dates. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call. My cell
phone number is 518-774-9556 and | will be more than happy to speak with you about these changes.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

Christian Education SuperYOUTH GATHERING BY THE NUMBERS
It’s been over two months since we went to Houston for the ELCA National Youth Gathering
and we want to thank you all for your prayers, love and support. While in Houston, we visited
NASA and attended a Houston Astros baseball game. At the Mass Gatherings in the evenings,
we listened to some very inspirational speakers and for our service day, we helped a
Methodist Church prepare for their 75" anniversary by helping with cleaning and landscaping.
In this newsletter, our participants are sharing with everyone what their favorite day was at
the Gathering. And for those of you who like numbers, here are some figures:
At the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Houston in 2018:
1. $261,226 was collected during Sunday morning worship (to be divided between three
different ministries)
. 1348 units of blood donated
. Over 40,000 books donated (thank you for your contributions!)
6 historic cemeteries cleaned out
. 42 community/school gardens worked in
. 44 homes affected by Hurricane Harvey were worked on
. 6500 homes canvassed, informing residents of city resources
NOURWN
And that is just some of the stuff that the ELCA youth did to help in Houston. Our servant
companion volunteers, Megan and Alyssa, led groups that learned about human trafficking,
worked at a children’s center for victims of abuse and neglect, and worked in city parks,
schools and a church.
In a blog by Chelle Huth (Manager of the Curriculum Writing Team for the ELCA) she reminds
us that “grace is a foundational and distinctive piece of the Lutheran faith. This gift,
underserved and freely given, changes lives and perspectives as people realize they are
enough because of what Christ has done and are called into the world to serve their neighbor
and share the good news”. And THIS truly does change everything!
We would like to thank you all by giving you a taste of Houston and showing you what we
experienced by inviting you to lunch and a photo presentation on Sunday, September 23,
2018 immediately following worship. PLEASE JOIN US!!!!

giMY FAVORITE DAY IN HOUSTON AT THE ELCA NATIONAL YOUTH GATHERING
‘Abby VanValkenburgh:
My favorite day was synod day. It was really fun meeting kids from New York. | loved interacting with all of them. |
made new friends and met the love of my life. The games we played were really fun and helped me get out of my
comfort zone and talk to new people. The trip to Houston was definitely an awesome experience that | will never
forget.
Emily Frasier:
My favorite day was our service project day. | loved going out and cleaning up the church we were at and seeing how
truly appreciative the members of the church were for what we were doing. | also loved doing good work and bettering
where we were. One place being made better can have a huge impact on a town.
Schuyler Claes:
My favorite day in Houston was our Synod Day. It was awesome to see other kids from around New York who believe
the same as we do. It was also great to hear our bishop speak about his life experiences and he showed us that no
matter what, God has a plan for us. | also really enjoyed our service day. Helping the church get ready for its 75"
anniversary was great and it was also nice to see how thankful the Pastor was. | had an amazing time in Houston and
¥’m so thankful | got to go,
Zachary Ropeter:
My favorite days was definitely Synod Day. It was cool meeting others from Upstate and just having really good
conversations with them and seeing what was going on in everyone's life and knowing there are others closer than we
think that are similar to us all.
Donovan Smith:
Every day had great memorable moments to me, like trying new foods, going to the Houston Astros game, Houston
Space Center, Synod Day, interactive Day and the church service. Also talking to new people. | had a great time with
everybody in our group, the adults and my dad. One thing that | think that all of us will take back from this trip is that
this trip changes everything, and that I can remember that there's grace for that.Megan Frasier (volunteered as a Servant Companion):
had an all-around amazing experience being a servant companion. | was a little nervous at first not thinking | would be
good leader and didn’t think | would be able to handle it after al the training, My favorite day though would have to
be my first service project because | had an all-around amazing group. They were so much fun to be around and talk to,
and they were incredibly hard working and willing to do whatever was needed; cleaning up the elementary school of a
very low privileged area in Houston. They got me to believe in myself that | could be a great leader and could be a good
servant companion.
Alyssa Davis (volunteered as a Servant Companion):
My favorite day while in Houston was the second service that my group and | participated in. We helped to create and
set up a book fair at a local YMCA for underprivileged children between the ages of 5-8 who were able to take home
several books for free that day. Interacting with those kids and getting them excited about reading and learning was an
extremely rewarding experience and they made it hard to say goodbye after only a few hours of being together. Every
service day made me feel like | was really making a difference in Houston and that was by far my favorite part of this
gathering
Clyde Smith
Every day held favorite parts for me from watching the young children of Houston staying cool in the fountain to my first
professional baseball game with my son. To Sunday worship with 33,000 young adult Lutherans. 1 would say my
favorite day was Saturday, our service day, helping the Methodist Church clean up so that it could get ready for its 75”
anniversary. It wasn’t hard work but the Pastor and other members of the church were so appreciative. That's why we
were there. Thank you to everyone at Grace for supporting our youth and making this possible! ! even survived my first
plane ride, | still can’t believe you got me on a plane!
Heidi Ropeter:
| truly enjoyed our trip to Houston! | especially enjoyed being able to see my aunt and uncle while at the same time
enjoying time with our youth, so that was a double blessing for mel | feel that our Synod Day as well as our Service Day
were both great! While listening to our Bishop (Macholz), | was impressed by how relatable he was, not only to our
youth, but to the adults saying “look, | flunked out of college, but look at me now, I'm a Bishop. You can do great
things.” That's a great and powerful message! And our service project was great too. Much more organized this time
around and | felt we were more helpful to the community of Houston. Thanks for letting me be a part of this trip!
Barbara Frederick:
It’s hard for me to pick a favorite day for the Gathering, because each day offered something wonderful in and of itself.
loved Synod Day for the way it brought our youth members together with other youth members from all over upstate
New York and the joy and fun they experienced with each other. | loved the service day at the Methodist Church
because | was so proud of how our group tackled each job with enthusiasm and energy and how appreciative and how
blessed the Pastor of that church felt because of the help. Every night had speakers that were inspirational and
relatable. Every Youth Gathering is different so even though this was my fifth event, it stil felt like it was something
ew and wonderful and exciting!THANK voU

Dear Friends at Grace Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your generous gift of quilts and kits for LWR’s distribution overseas. These gifts of your hearts
and hands are beautiful expressions of God's grace and love to people all around the world.
Because of your support, LWR is able to share the tangible love of Christ with thousands of people through
your quilts and kits. Last year, LWR and partners Children’s Gift Ministry (CGM) and OLAM were busy
distributing School Kits in Honduras, to children whose families are vulnerable due to lack of access to the
‘most basic necessities, Parents of these families often have to choose between feeding their children and
sending them to school. Schoo! Kits were distributed to more than 28,000 Honduran children to help them get
back to or stay in school, increasing their chances of breaking the chains of chronic poverty and avoiding the
very real risk of gang involvement. In addition to being practical, these kits provide a source of comfort,
security and hope to those who receive them.
Your quilts and kits provide important necessities to our neighbors around the world, and serve as reminders
that they are not alone or forgotten. We also shipped quilts and kits to Georgia, Angola, Thailand, Pakistan,
Mali and Burkina Faso, last year. On behalf of our neighbors in villages, schools, hospitals and refugee camps
around the world, | extend deepest thanks for your contribution, and pray God's richest blessings on your life
and work!
In Christ,
Welane bbboa
