DESCRIPTION This course is designed to explore the field of sports medicine including, careers with in the

profession.strength and conditioning, nutrition, and the knowledge of anatomy and

physiology in order to provide students with practical experience in prevention, treatment,

and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

OBJECTIVES To provide instruction to students about prevention, treatment, rehabilitation of athletic

injuries and to have the highest quality sports medicine program we can provide to students

and athletes.

REQUIREMENTS All students will be required to attend class daily, participate in daily discussions, work

hands on in some aspects of sports medicine, and complete a project on a topic of their

choice throughout the semester.

MATERIALS NEEDED Pocket Folder, Pencil/Pen (Daily), Notebook

GRADING SCALE The Pitt County Schools standard grading scale will be used and will be broken down by
the following percentage breakdowns

90-100 = A 15% = Project


80-89 = B 15% = Quizzes
70-79 = C 20% = Classwork
60-69 = D 25% = Tests
Below 60 = F 25% = Exam

Unit 1 Introduction to Sports Medicine, Athletic Care System, and Health Care Team

Unit 2 Physical Conditioning and Training

Unit 3 Sports and Performance Nutrition

Unit 4 Emergency Care, First Aid, and Common Treatment Modalities

Unit 5 Medical and Environmental Considerations, Liability, and Law

Unit 6 Anatomy and Common Athletic Injuries - Lower body (leg, knee, ankle, foot)

Unit 7 Anatomy and Common Athletic Injuries - Core (hips, pelvis, lower back, abdominal)

Unit 8 Anatomy and Common Athletic Injuries - Upper body (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand)

Unit 9 Anatomy and Common Athletic Injuries - Head, Neck, and Spine

Students will complete observation hours mostly during class in order to get a hands on
experience in some of the fields that they will encounter and learn about throughout the
course. There will be opportunities for students to volunteer to help out PCS Athletic
OBSERVATION HOURS Trainer during some games and practices throughout the semester. Bonus points will be
given if the student provides a written document of some of the situations and how they
relate to our class during their observation. The time volunteer must be documented and
signed off for credit.

Students will be asked to complete a class project of their choosing. All topics must be
related to some field of Sports Medicine and approved by the instructor. Students will
PROJECT periodically be allowed to work on their projects in class and collaborate with students that
are completing the same project. The student projects will be submitted one week before
exams. Further details regarding these projects and criteria will be discussed in class.
