Directions: Solve what is being asked for in each problem following the
steps in hypothesis testing. Write the null and alternative hypothesis
both in words and in statistical terms. MAN students will answer
number 1; MAED number 2; MAPA and MSCJE number 3. All will
answer numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7. For numbers 6 and 7, answer what is
asked for. Please use a new page for each number.

1. Brand x and brand y of pain relievers were tested to see how much ibuprofen each
table contained. Does brand x have more ibuprofen? Test at α = 0 .05 level.

2. A teacher employed two methods of teaching in her class. A group of 15 students
were taught with the traditional classroom procedure (lecture type) while another
group of 15 students were taught by means of programmed materials. At the end of
the semester, the same examination was given to each group. The lecture type got
an average grade of 86 with a standard deviation of 3 while the group that made use
of programmed materials got an average of 84 with a standard deviation of 4. Test
whether there are differences in the two methods of learning. Use α = 0.10 level.

3. A researcher would like to measure the effects of air pollution on life expectancy.
Two samples of newborn rats are selected. The first sample of 10 rats is housed in
cages where the atmosphere is equivalent to the air in a severely polluted city. The
second sample of 10 rats is placed in cages with clean air. The average life span of
the first group is 478 days with SS1 = 5020, while the second group has an average
life span of 511 with SS2 = 10,100. Does pollution cause a difference in life
expectancy? Test with α = 0.01.
(Note: pooled variance = (SS1 + SS2)/( n1 + n2) - 2

4. Suppose we wish to determine whether opinions of some voting residents in Ilocos

Norte concerning shift to federalism are independent of their income level. A
random sample of 1000 registered voters in Ilocos Norte were classified as to
whether they are in low, medium or high income bracket and whether or not infavor
of federalism. The observed frequencies are shown in the table below:

Is there difference between responses. Use 5% level of significance.

5. A snack foods company that supplies stores in a metropolitan area with “healthy
snack” products was interested in improving the shelf life of its tortilla chips
product. Six batches each one kg of the product was made under each of four
formulations. The batches were then kept under the same condition of storage.
Product conditions were checked each day for freshness. The shelf life in days until
the product was deemed to be lacking in freshness was as follows:

6. The following table shows the number of applicants accepted and refused by
different graduate programs of a big university. The table shows the name of the
program, the gender of the applicant, and the decision on the application.

a) Fill the blank columns of the above table.

b) If you look at each program, who is being admitted in higher percentage, men
or women?

c) If you look at the acceptance rate overall, who is being admitted in higher
percentage, men or women?
d) State clearly, a reason as to why do we have opposite answers in the parts b)
and c.)

7. Identify the type of sampling (cluster, convenience, random, stratified, systematic)

which would be used to get each of the following samples:

a) For a period of two days, measure the length of time each fifth person coming
into a bank waits in line for teller service.

b) Take a random sample of five zip codes from the Ilocos region and count the
number of students enrolled in the first grade for every elementary school in each
of the zip code areas.

c) Divide the users of the Internet into different age groups and then select a
random sample from each age group to survey the approximate amount of time
they spend on the Internet each month.

d) Survey five friends regarding their opinion about the quality of food in the
student cafeteria.

e) Pick a random sample of students enrolled at your college and determine the
number of credit hours they have each accumulated toward their degree programs.
