CIVIL ENGINEERING HISTORY

A Summary

Civil Engineering is considered as a specialty of Engineering, perhaps the

oldest one nevertheless the most closely related to civilization. Civil Engineering

plays the huge role on the growth and development of civilization. It has also

been a factor of survivability among early refinement of men thus leads to

development, experience, improvement of skill set and History. The thing that

struck me most is the devotion and great efforts of early men to survive the severe

natural environment by constructing facilities and structures that can make their

condition a bit more tranquil, but of course, development requires huge scale of

sacrifice. Among those sacrifices, time became a huge one.

Throughout the course of time, Civil Engineering manifested greatly on

civilization. From the great “Pyramid of Giza” in 2600 B.C, the “Great Wall of

China” in 214 B.C, the “Parthenon in Greece” in 438 B.C, the “Pont du Gard” in

210 B.C. the “Aqueduct of Nemasus” in 15 B.C, the “Colossuem in Rome” in 80

A.D, the “Great Canal” completed on 610 A.D, and to the “Eddystone Light
House”, the first structure by the first self-proclaimed Civil Engineer John Smeaton

in 1750. This was also the first time the term “Civil Engineer”, this was used to

distinguish himself from the military engineers of his time.

As I thoroughly understand the manuscript, it is clear that the art of Civil

Engineering was used to direct the great sources of power in nature for the benefit

and accessibility of men. In medieval times, engineers were specialists in

attacking in defending castle, considered having the technical knowledge. It

was also applied in public works, it is also means of production and of traffic in

states of external and internal trade evident in construction of roads, bridges,

aqueducts, canals, rivers navigation, docks, and also for intercourse and

exchange. Ports, harbors, moles, breakwaters, and lighthouse construction

played a huge part of commerce and trade.

In conclusion, Civil Engineering is a mastered, well developed art

associating science and mathematics to the very interest of men. It became a

tool used to enhance and strengthen our way of living. A safeguard of men,

where we can utilize immense knowledge realistically. In the end, the race of men

will do its very best to survive. Knowledge is like a renewable resource, it can never

be empty, it is omnipresent. The same thing zests in Civil Engineering, as long as

men will continue to survive, Civil Engineering will continue to improve. Viva Civil!
