Assignment Class XI
Motion in one dimension

1. A car accelerates uniformly on a straight road from rest to a speed of 180 km/h in 25 s.Find
the distance covered by the car in this time interval Ans: 625m

2. Two balls A and B are thrown simultaneously , A vertically upwards with a speed of
20m/s from the ground , and B vertically downwards from a height of 40 m with the
same speed and along the same line of motion. At what point do the balls collide?
( g=9.8m/s2) Ans: after 1s at a height of 15.1 m from the ground

3. A person standing on the roof of a building 30 m high drops a ball vertically

downwards with an initial velocity of 500 cm/s.
(a) What will be the velocity of ball after 0.5s
(b) Where will be the ball after 1.5 s?
(c) What will be the velocity of the ball while striking the earth g= 9.8m/s2
Ans (a) 9.9m/s (b) 18.525 m below the roof (c) 24.76m/s

4. A boy standing on the top of a 40 m high building projects a stone vertically upwards with an
initial velocity of 10 m/s.The stone eventually falls to the ground.
a) After how long will the stone strike the ground.
b) After how long will the stone pass through the point from where it was projected.
c) With what velocity will it strike the ground. g= 10 m/s2
Ans: (a) 4s (b) 2s (c) 30 m/s

5. A ball is thrown vertically upwards from the top of tower with a velocity of 20 m/s. The ball
strikes the earth after 5 s of its throwing. What is the height of the tower. What will be the
velocity of the ball while stiking the earth? g=9.8ms-2 Ans : 22.5m,29 m/s

6. An astronaut jumps from an aeroplane . After he had fallen 40 m , then his parachute opens.
Now he falls with a retardation of 2m/s2and reaches the earth with a velocity of 3m/s. What
was the height of the aeroplane? For how long the astronaut remained in air.9=9.8m/s-2
Ans: 234 m , 15.4 s
Projectile Motion

7. A ball is thrown with a velocity of 15m/s at an angle of 30° with the horizontal. Determine(i)
the time of flight of the ball (ii) the maximum height attained by the ball
Ans 1.5 s ,2.8m

8. A cannon is to be fired upto 500 m horizontally. What should be the angle of projection , if
the shells are fired with a velocity of 100 m/s Ans 15 ° or 75°

9. A bomb is fired horizontally with a velocity of 20 m/s from the top of a tower 40 m high
.After how much time and at what horizontal distance from the tower will the bomb strike
the ground? g= 9.8ms-2
Ans : 2.86s , 57.2 m
10. A stone is thrown down from a bridge at an angle of 30° with the horizontal with a velocity
of 25m/s. If the stone strikes the water after 2.5 s, then calculate the height of the bridge
from the water surface. (g=9.8m/s2)
Ans: 61.9 m

11. A hunter aims his gun and fires a bullet directly at a monkey on a tree.At the instant the
bullet leaves the gun, the monkey starts falling freely. Will the bullet hit the monkey? Explain

On vectors

1. Find the unit vector of (A + B ) where A= 2i- j + 3k and B= 3 i- 2j – 2 k

2. Given A=0.3i + 0.4 j + c k . Calculate the value 0f c if A is a unit vector

3. Determine the vector which when added to the resultant of A= 3i – 5 j +7 k and B= 2i+4 j -3 k
gives unit vector along y direction.

4. Find the angle between the following pair of vectors A= i+ j+ k and B= -2i – 2 j – 2 k

5. Prove that the vectors A= 3i – 2 j + k, B= i- 3j + 5 k and C= 2i + j – 4 k form a right-angled

triangle.
