Establishment

of
Jindal School of International Affairs
(JSIA)
Vision
The increasing interconnectedness of international phenomena due to greater density of cross-

border contact and exchanges is rendering the practical and academic use of single-disciplined and

methodologically incomplete studies obsolete. A School that combines the essences of International

Relations, International Law and International Business is a necessity of our globalised times because
of the density and thickness of international problems.

Internationally conscious students who have completed a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline, as well
as diplomats, international lawyers, media personnel and corporate managers, require broad-based,

eclectic and inter-disciplinary education and training that will be assets in the knowledge-oriented

global workplace.

The Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA) aims to address this need and enhance Indian
and international capacities of analysing and solving world problems. It intends to strengthen the

intellectual basis for planning India’s march to great power status as a responsible member of the

international community with its own trademark vision for global governance and stable world order.

Programmes at the Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA)

In August 2011, JSIA will be offering its first degree programme, Master of Arts in Diplomacy, Law and Business (MA DLB).
This will be followed by the offering of a Master of Arts in Global Governance (MA GG) in the Fall of 2012. MA
DLB stresses theoretical and policy research, but insists on relating it to the empirically rich phenomena from the world of
international affairs. It equips students with practical skills and techniques that are informed by theoretical generalisations
and debates drawn from the three disciplines of International Relations, International Law and International Business. MA
DLB has been designed as a geographically comprehensive Masters degree programme that will raise awareness and analytical
depth in India about academically neglected regions such as Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
MA DLB will engage students and professors in academic instruction and research of topics in cutting edge areas such as:
• the rise of ‘BRIC’ multinational corporations and their • the impact of geo-economics on foreign policy calculus of
impact on corporate practice in advanced economies states
• the emergence of global governance headaches like • the social, political and business implications of the
climate change and piracy which require multi-faceted information technology (IT) revolution
policy responses that are political and legal, while • the resort to private military firms (PMFs) by great powers
involving commercial interests and the ensuing legal loopholes in curbing impunity in
• the politicisation of international criminal law with the war
reintroduction of the ‘crime of aggression’ and selective • the relevance of economic intelligence and consultancies
application of ‘humanitarianism’ in international policy making, and the challenges posed
• the growing weight of business associations in to the status quo on global institutions by emerging
international policy determination powers like India
Curriculum and Pedagogy of the MA DLB Programme

The MA DLB degree requires completion of 12 courses (36 credits) over 4 semesters in 3 thematic areas of specialisation, viz.
International Relations, International Business and International Law. Out of these 12, there will be 7 core courses spread
over the first 2 semesters which are mandatory for all students. The remaining 5 elective courses can be chosen from a wider
range of course offerings depending on the specialisation interests and career aspirations of students. Apart from these, there
will be a mandatory Master’s Thesis requirement, a Foreign Language requirement, and a Guided Internship requirement for
completion of the MA DLB programme. One of the hallmarks of the educational experience at JSIA will be a commitment to
fostering innovation and excellence in teaching, in line with the high standards already set by the first two Schools of JGU, the
Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) and the Jindal Global Business School (JGBS). Students will be
• introduced to a ‘think theoretically’ perspective so that • urged to ask how and why political considerations

International Collaborations and Strategic Relationship with UNU

JSIA is being launched through a strategic partnership with the United Nations
University (UNU)’s Institute for Sustainability and Peace. In a letter to the
O.P. Jindal Global University, the United Nations University has observed:

“The UNU strongly supports the planned establishment of Jindal School of International Affairs in the current
academic year, as the third school of O.P. Jindal Global University....By applying the global perspective and
approaches of JGU in the context of international affairs, the Jindal School of International Affairs has the
potential to make a significant contribution towards scholarship and the training of future international
leaders..., the UNU is keen to engage in collaborative initiatives with JGU and the new Jindal School of
International Affairs. ”
Professor Kazuhiko Takeuchi
Vice Rector, United Nations University
Director, UNU Institute for Sustainability and Peace, Japan

JSIA intends to enter into Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with a number of other universities to institutionalise an
international exchange component in the final semester of its Masters’ programmes. The basic goal of having a foreign student
exchange programme within JSIA is to give our students an opportunity to take graduate-level courses for a trimester or a
semester in a foreign institution in lieu of some of the elective courses at JSIA. The School’s Board of International Advisers
will facilitate these arrangements.

“There are many asymmetries of capability in this increasingly globalized but highly unequal world.
For universities and social science scholarship, one of the most immediate asymmetries is in higher
education: not enough scholars are educated in the rapidly growing developing countries, familiar with
their conditions and reflecting their distinctive perspectives. If the Jindal School of International Affairs
helps to alleviate this asymmetry, it will be a very important institution indeed.”
