Famous British composer, John Rutter, wrote many beautiful pieces of music including one called Mass of
the Children. As you may know, a choral mass follows the Western traditional worship service: Gloria, Kyrie,
Alleluia before the Gospel, Creed, Sanctus (“Holy, Holy, Holy”), Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God”), Peace, and
Amen. As the name implies, this particular one includes both adult and children’s choirs. In typical British
fashion, the version I have is the boys’ choir from Cambridge.
Each choral mass has its own way of celebrating by using either uplifting or somber music. John Rutter typi-
cally lifts his listeners to the rafters of heaven – and this rendition does not disappoint.
As I listened to the Mass of the Children the first time, I drove to some destination that allowed me to listen
to the CD in its entirety. Probably just like everyone else, when I listened I got lost in the music. Each move-
ment of the mass provided deeper and deeper layers that made me think about our own celebration of Eu-
charist each weekend. When the CD got to the singing of the Peace, I noticed a haunting melody that the
children sang.
While a lone baritone sang a solo, a children’s choir joined in with a familiar hymn, quietly, underneath his
strong voice. As I listened, I couldn’t think of the tune, but instead focused on the words, “Glory to you, My
God this night” (Give to us peace). Slowly, slowly, leading up to the children’s choir, I began to sing along. I
knew the tune – what was it?
Then it dawned on me, “They are singing the doxology!” It made me think of two things at once – Praise God
from whom all blessings flow, and Give us peace! Imagine that – John Rutter had taken us to the realm of
heaven by the doxology. An old tune, mixed within a new one! It was the perfect and most beautiful sound,
like the sound of what I imagine angels.
Have you ever heard a piece of music that just took you out of a present, perhaps difficult or challenging sit-
uation? Did it elevate you to the presence of God?
We have such wonderful musicians in this congregation; and I am not only talking about Neal Deniston and
Barb Stephens. We have young people who can sing, and play musical instruments AND we have a congrega-
tion that likes to sing! That is a wonderful blessing!
Martin Luther is attributed with saying, “The one who sings prays twice.” Singing is a form of prayer. Some-
times when we cannot think of the words to say, a song pops into our head and we begin to hum, or whistle,
or even to sing aloud. That’s prayer!
Think about the past 130 years, and about all of the prayers that have flowed from this congregation. Some
were in words spoken, some in scripture read, some in hymns sung, all with hearts so full that experiences
had to be shared with God.
Thank God, and all of the musicians in our congregation for helping us to pray and praise the Almighty God!
Peace,
Pr Tim

CRUX—”Christ Readies Us for XI” is a new collaboration of rostered leaders in the
Maumee Valley Conference NWOS-ELCA, seeking to equip the laity by expanding
how ministry is done and who is responsible for various forms and functions of minis-
try.

On September 16, the following tracks will be presented:

SERVE—”It’s More Than a Casserole” A course entitled, Christian Caregiving as a Way of Life,
facilitated by Pastor Vicky Coombs and Pastor Mindy Elliott.
STUDY—”It’s Not Your Parents’ Sunday School Anymore” A course entitled, Making Sense of
Scripture, facilitated by Pastor Don Leckrone and Pastor Tim Reynolds.
SPEAK—”What Would God Have Me Say?” A course in listening to and crafting a Gospel mes-
sage and sharing it through preaching or public witness, facilitated by Pastor Mary Beth Smith-Gunn.
SEEK—”When Sighs and Groans Become Prayer and Pleading” A Course in seeking God
through prayer and meditation facilitated by Deacon Jean Wise.

This endeavor is in response to the increasing reality of the shortage of rostered leaders in the
ELCA, and an awareness that the gifts are present, awaiting opportunities to share in and beyond
current congregational contexts.

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM
All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any con-
cerns or questions you may have had. If you have not been contacted by your deacon for a while, I encourage
you to call them to discuss your questions. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needs and we
encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appro-
priate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and
future friend and confidant.
We also want to emphasize the importance of speaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to
know your concerns to help provide a solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource
within our congregation to share wisdom and knowledge.
In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the
congregation. Most importantly we are available for you when your needs might require someone to talk with
other than Pastor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zion’s Lutheran Church
and we encourage you to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for
any assistance.
