SCREEN ANALYSIS
(Wiley Mill and Sieve Shaker)

INTRODUCTION

Size reducuon is the produotion of snraller pa*icles from larger particles of the same
material. A fracture in the larger particles takes place in the operation upon the 4plication of
pressure. The effectiveness of a given size reduction operation can be evaluaJed by making a
screen analysis.

In making a screen aralysis, the screens to be used are cleaned with a brush md tapped
free from any adhering particle. They are nested together with dre lowest mesh number at the bp
and dre highest mesh number st the bottom. A botbm pan and top mver are put in place to
complete ihe set. A weighed amount of material is placed on the iop screen. The screens are
shaken long enough for the particles to &ll through until a screen is acquired where the openings
are too small brthe particles to pass through. The weight of the material retained on each screen
is detemrined.

Screen analysis can be represented by a gaph of mass fraction of the matenal retained on
each screen versus ihe average diamoter of the particle. ?he mass t'action of the material
retained on a screen (x) is equal to the mass of the material retarnod on lhe screen divided by the
mass of the sample, The average diameter of the particle (D^) is the arithmetic mean of the
apertures of two successive screens.

For the purpose of firrther analysis, the following panicle size representdions can be
computed:

(1) The lengih mean diameter, D,, is used in the study of co mparison ofdroplet evaporation.

"'=+,.#ii

(2) The volume mean diameter, D".r, is used in the study of distribution ofmass in a spray.

3.
(3) The surface mean diameter, D* , is used in the study of adsorption, orusbing and light
diffusion.

o* = II (*,/o", )1E6, lo'r)I''

(4) The volume surface mean diameter or Sauter mean diameter, Dou^ , is used in the mrdy of
efficionry, mass transfer and catalytic reactions.

i SAFETY PRECAUTION

i Students allergic o chalk or with astrma should use protective masks.

i
:
wesrE DFPoSAL
, Place rhe powdered chalk in a piastic bag and put it away in a trashcdl'

PROCEDURE
' 1. Get l0piecesof chalk ard break them to smaller pioces'

2. Grind tre chalk in the Wilev mill.

3. Measure 50 grarns ofthe powdered chalk.

4. Prepare the Tyler sandard screears and lhe bottom pan to be used. Brush fiem o renrove aty
i adheriag particles that block fie screeao holes

5. Weigh eactr the clesr screen and lhe botbm p8n'

i O. Nest the screans together wift the los,Est mesh number at the top and the higbest mesl
nurnber at the botbm Place the bottom pan.

; a. Ivlount the scre€ns on lhe sieve shaker and shake the assembly for I 5 minutes.

' 9. Get dre weight of the botmm Pan.

10. Shake the assembly again for 5 minutes'

: I I - Weigh again the bottom pan- If the weight of the botOm pan equals the weight of rhe

P*icies for 5 minutes'

,
' l2.De@rmine the weight ofeach screen witl the retained powdered chalk after sbaking.

13. Get the weight of the powdered chalk retained on each screen by subtracting dre
weight of
the screen from the weigbt ofthe screen after shaking

14. Compute the mass &action ofthe chalk on each screen'

15. Compute the average diameter ofthe particles for each fraction.

16. Make a graph of mass fraction versus average diameter.

17. Calculare the length mean diameter, volume mean diametet surface mean dianeter, and
Sauter mesn diameter.
