If you are like a lot of newbies to the cannabis industry, you are probably
wondering what Dabs are and why they are gaining in popularity.
As people become more aware of the dangers of inhaling smoke of any kind into
their lungs, they’ve started seeking out different ways to enjoy the medicinal
benefits of various dry herbs.
The use of vaporizers has risen steadily over the past few years.
Like vaping, dabbing is also quickly growing around the cannabis world.
Dabs are a term for the way some people prefer to smoke their hash oil.
Hash oil, also known as hashish oil, butane hash/honey oil (BHO), cannabis oil,
liquid cannabis, is a resin obtained by solvent extraction of marijuana and/or
hashish.
While dried cannabis flowers typically contain 10 to 25 percent THC, hash can
have up to 90 percent THC, the psychoactive component that gives consumers the
high feeling.
A dab is a dose of concentrate that is heated on a hot surface, usually referred to
as a “nail”, and then inhaled through a dab “rig”.
Dabs are concentrated doses of cannabis that are made by extracting THC and
other cannabinoids using a solvent like butane or carbon dioxide, resulting in
sticky oils.
Some Popular Names for Hash Oil:
What is Dabbing?
“Dabbing” is used because you dab
a small amount of concentrated
cannabis onto a “rig” in order to
produce vapor.
The concentrated cannabis used will
be either a wax, or oil in form.
Oil is great to use because it is thick
and will not run off the “nail” used to
place it on.
The nail is the heating element that
the wax or oil is placed on to.
Dabber:
The first thing needed is the “Dabber”, also commonly called a “wand”.
The dabber is a tool to transport the oil/wax concentrate to the nail.
Dabbers are made out of anything from glass to stainless steel to titanium (Ti).
There are different shapes of dabbers, some with a ballpoint head, and others with
a flat one. Dabbers with a ballpoint head work best with oily, stickier concentrates,
while flat heads work best to cut and break into shatter or harder concentrates. If
you are low in cash, some people use things like this instead of buying dabbers:
◉ Dental picks
◉ Knives
◉ Paper clips
◉ Glass stir sticks
There are literally thousands of different designs of glass pieces to use when
dabbing.
They are basically like a typical glass smoking bong. The main difference is the
nail, which sits on it like a bowl on a glass bong.
Glass rigs for dabbing greatly range in price from $30 to over $1000.
The price increases as the quality of the glass goes up.
There are many types of shapes, height, width, and types of glass rigs.
Glass doesn’t have to be expensive. If on a budget, glass rigs can be made at home
out of cheap materials.
Some popular brands of glass rigs are:
◉ Chameleon Glass
◉ Grav Labs
◉ Pulse Glass
◉ Purr Glass
◉ Hitman Glass
◉ Bubbler
◉ Reversal
◉ Barrel
If you are somewhat crafty and want to make a cheap, homemade glass rig, you
could put one together with the following items:
◉ Downstem
◉ Glass Bottle
Nails:
The nail sits on your glass piece and after heating it with your torch, it heats your
wax or oil above the point of vaporization.
Nails come in Male or Female styles.
Titanium nails come in 3 different sizes.
10mm, 14mm, and 18mm.
If you use a downstem or a slide, the size of your nail should match the size of the
downstem/slide that you use.
Here's a pic of female domeless titanium nails sizes. Left to right: 18mm, 14mm,
and 10mm.
After you have figured out the correct joint size, now you need to know whether
your rig requires a female or male domeless nail.
When you purchase your rig you will know wheat it needs as far as male or female
from the description or what the salesperson tells you if you are buying it in person.
Female nails fit around your glass joint.
Traditional or standard oil rigs use female titanium nails.
Male titanium nails on the other hand, need to go inside of the glass joint.
If your water pipe uses a downstem or a slide, then it will most likely require
a male titanium nail.
Adjustable Nails and All-In-One Domeless Nails are best suited for those who have
multiple rigs of various sizes and joint styles (male and female), who would like
one nail to move from one to the other.
There are 4 types of materials for nails commonly sold for use with glass rigs.
1. Quartz
2. Glass
3. Ceramic
4. Titanium (Ti)
Quartz nails are considered the best for savoring the terpenes in concentrates,
meaning that you can get a really great taste.
Quartz nails can last you a very long time with care.
Quartz nails are similar to glass in that they take a little longer to heat than the
Titanium nail. Quartz nails are less money than Titanium nails.
Just like glass, quartz nails are prone to cracking from extensive use. But quartz
nails can last you a very long time with proper care. They tend to cool down
quicker than titanium nails do.
This can be problematic at times because the concentrate might melt without
vaporizing it as much as it should be.
Quarts nails typically are available as standard or Honey Pot domeless nails.
They do not hold heat as long as titanium nails do, and they take longer to heat
up.
The nail in a dab rig can be either a dome, or a domeless nail, meaning, as it
sounds, either with a cover on it, or without one.
As you shop around for dab rigs, you’ll notice that some nails have domes and
some don’t.
As with nail materials, there’s a lot of debate about whether domed or domeless
nails are best.
Domed nails are infinitely safer, and they help to hold in the vapor so you can
inhale as much of it as possible.
Also, the glass dome looks really neat and covers up the nail nicely.
However, some people don’t like them because they must be slid into place, so
domeless versions are also available.
Dome Nails
The dome is a glass enclosure
that slides over the stem of your
rig to shield you from touching
the nail and it traps the smoke
so it can be inhaled.
The nail that is used with a
dome is small and can fit
underneath the dome cover and
slide into the rig.
Some nails are adjustable and
can be raised up or down to
equal the size of the dome.
Domeless Nails
Domeless nails are longer and wider
than dome nails, and have larger
heads.
Domeless nails are sturdier and are
made of metal or ceramic.
Domeless nails do not require the step
of placing the dome over them before
taking the hit.
But it is important to not burn yourself
when using domeless nails, since it is
easier to do than when there is a dome
protecting the hand from the heat.
Seasoning a Nail:
Without properly “seasoning” (preparing) your new titanium nail, your essential oil
might have a metallic taste.
Just like with cast iron pans, if you cook on an unseasoned cast iron pan, the food
will taste odd.
Seasoning your nail will also remove polishes from the manufacturing process off
of the surface of the nail.
Instead of the more traditional nail, some users like the use what is known as a
“skillet”, “honey pot”, or “curve”.
They operate by heating a titanium pad that is attached to a swing arm.
Then swinging it under a bell or curve and applying the dab while inhaling through
the rig.
They do not work as well as traditional nails in our opinion and often result in
smoke loses.
Blowtorch:
In order to heat the nail, a blowtorch is needed.
The fuel the torch uses should be butane.
Propane gets too hot too fast and is not as safe to
have lying around as butane is.
As for torches, hold off on buying an actual
blowtorch.
They are too big and too powerful for what you are
trying to do.
Also, they are very dangerous.
Look for mini-torches instead.
If you are scared of using a torch, there are safer options out there such as:
Vape Pen
Vape Pens function similarly to electronic cigarettes except for the fact that they
allow you to insert your own dry herbs (cannabis) or oil & wax concentrates into it.
E-Nail
E-nails are quite convenient.
They are more expensive, but
they eliminate the need to use
a torch and that is a nice plus.
E-nails also allow great control
since it is possible to set them
to a precise temperature.
Electric nails are often metal
boxes with a port for a coil, a
switch or two, and a PID that
gauges your coils current
temperature.
Usually the gauge can be turned on separately from the coil to allow the user to
prevent themselves from getting burned.
Coils come in two different sizes; 16 and 20 millimeters, and will only work with
nails that have been designed for coils of that size.
Setting a temperature is important to the overall experience considering that the
main feature of the unit is maintaining the adjustable temperature steadily.
Using a carb cap is essential as well, causing the chamber to billow up during a
low temp dab after it’s thrown on top.
Why go electric?
The benefits of going electric for the nail’s heat source makes the decision to buy
one easy.
The nail will be cleaner because it’s not burning the hash but rather vaporizing it
at the optimal temperature of your choice.
They minimize the expense of the butane that is needed for the blowtorch.
First, pour some rubbing alcohol into the rig and let it soak for at least 10 minutes.
This should help to loosen up the reburn and other residue.
The alcohol will become a darker color.
Pour out the alcohol and repeat the process.
Next, use the pipe cleaner and a little more rubbing alcohol to get in the cracks
and clean it all out.
Next, let the rig dry completely.
Rosin Technique
The Rosin technique, or “RosinTech”, is an easy way to safely make dabs at home.
It’s chemical-free, explosion-free, quick and easy!
Here is what you will need to do it:
Step 1- Fold a piece of the parchment paper in half and put some cannabis in the
middle
Step 2- Set the straightening iron to medium-low heat (230 to 300 degrees F) and
then squeeze the parchment paper with a lot of pressure for about five seconds
Step 3- Open the paper and iron and remove the flattened, heated starting material
(The bud should be brown, or darkish green now, and should be flat. If it’s not flat,
do it again and press harder)
Step 5- Allow the Rosin to cool before scraping it off the parchment paper with
either a razor blade or a dabbing tool (wand)
That’s It!
You will see a ring of oily resin around it.
This is exactly what you’re looking for.
You will be able to pull a 7% to 12% return of a translucent (and dabbable) solvent-
less oil, which is as high of a percentage as expensive extraction machines.
10% of 10 pounds would be 1 pound of hash oil.
Reported THC levels with the Rosin Technique have shown numbers between 50
percent and 75 percent THC, similar to that of high-quality water hash, but much
easier to do!
The same exact process can be used to make dabs out of kief in a rolling box or
to refine bubble hash.
The use of a hair straightener is new to the cannabis industry, but the history of
Rosin Tech is long.
In ancient times, humans used to pack cannabis in a hemp bag and hold it over a
fire until the rosin began to come out of the bag.
They would then scrape the rosin off and smoke it.
They used to call the rosin, “red oil”.
The ease of use and quality of finished product produced from the Rosin Technique
has motivated some manufacturers to focus on producing pressing machines for
the commercial cannabis industry.
The Rosin Technique has a lot of producers of expensive solvent based extraction
machines worried.
But, since so many people out there are using butane extractor machines, and are
interested in BHO, we will discuss how to accomplish it here.
BHO is the most common type of extract on the market and has a variety of names
(wax, shatter, crumble, oil, errl, honeycomb).
BHO generally tests between 60 percent and 90 percent THC, making it the
strongest concentrate on the mainstream market.
Do not ever make BHO inside a house!
Go outside where the air is flowing if you must do this method!
What you’ll need:
◉ Extraction Tube
◉ Butane Canisters
◉ Coffee Filters
◉ Stove/Double Boiler
◉ Collection Dish
◉ Concentrate Container
(One can of butane typically should be enough to extract a full tube of dried
cannabis)
Step 1: Pick up your 1 ounce of high quality dried cannabis flowers
Step 3: Drip the butane through the opposite end from the side you packed it in
Step 4- Attach coffee filters tightly around the tube on the end you packed the
cannabis in
Step 5- Collect the drippings that go through the tube into the collection dish
Step 6- Keep straining the butane though the extraction tube until the can is empty,
and collect all the butane in the collection dish
Step 5: Put all the liquid from the collection dish into the pan. It should be a golden
brown liquid
Step 6- Take the collection dish and put it in a larger frying pan filled with hot water
until your mixture starts to bubble
Step 9- Take the leftover cannabis concentrate and place it on a non-stick silicone
parchment paper to dry
*Tip
When the liquid dripping from the extraction tube appears completely
transparent, that’s the indication that all the THC oils from the cannabis have
been extracted from the tube.
If it is not transparent then more butane can be run through the tube.
Is Dabbing Safe?
Dabbing can be dangerous. The extraction process is more of the cause than the
actual act of dabbing though.
Some people try to do their own extractions with butane and do it indoors and end
up blowing up their homes!
Improper butane ventilation is the main problem and danger with doing
extractions.
Butane is highly flammable and it tends to sink, meaning that if you use it indoors
or don’t ventilate the room adequately, it could cause a serious problem.
It could lay dormant, and as soon as a cigarette is lit, and an ash falls, boom! The
wall is blown away!
Wear eye protection, as well as gloves and always keep a fire extinguisher near.
Never smoke cigarettes or cannabis, or anything really, and avoid having an open
flame around when doing any kind of extraction, even outdoors.
Also, dabs can be very potent. Sometimes so potent that they can cause the user
to almost overdose, or pass out.
Although it seems impossible to actually overdose from cannabis, if it were ever
going to happen, dabs would be the cause.
Sometimes the oil used is contaminated, and can lead to health hazards.
