Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Part 1- What Are Dabs? What is Dabbing?

What are Dabs?

If you are like a lot of newbies to the cannabis industry, you are probably
wondering what Dabs are and why they are gaining in popularity.
As people become more aware of the dangers of inhaling smoke of any kind into
their lungs, they’ve started seeking out different ways to enjoy the medicinal
benefits of various dry herbs.
The use of vaporizers has risen steadily over the past few years.
Like vaping, dabbing is also quickly growing around the cannabis world.
Dabs are a term for the way some people prefer to smoke their hash oil.
Hash oil, also known as hashish oil, butane hash/honey oil (BHO), cannabis oil,
liquid cannabis, is a resin obtained by solvent extraction of marijuana and/or
hashish.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

While dried cannabis flowers typically contain 10 to 25 percent THC, hash can
have up to 90 percent THC, the psychoactive component that gives consumers the
high feeling.
A dab is a dose of concentrate that is heated on a hot surface, usually referred to
as a “nail”, and then inhaled through a dab “rig”.
Dabs are concentrated doses of cannabis that are made by extracting THC and
other cannabinoids using a solvent like butane or carbon dioxide, resulting in
sticky oils.
Some Popular Names for Hash Oil:

◉ Butane hash oil (BHO)

◉ CO2 oil
◉ Wax
◉ Full melt
◉ Honey oil
◉ Budder
◉ Rick Simpson oil (RSO)
◉ Shatter
◉ Honeycomb

What is Dabbing?
“Dabbing” is used because you dab
a small amount of concentrated
cannabis onto a “rig” in order to
produce vapor.
The concentrated cannabis used will
be either a wax, or oil in form.
Oil is great to use because it is thick
and will not run off the “nail” used to
place it on.
The nail is the heating element that
the wax or oil is placed on to.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Most dabbers use a blowtorch to heat the oil on the nail.

When dabbing, it is necessary to heat up the nail with the torch first.
Then, once the nail is super hot, the wax or oil is placed on it.
Before placing the wax or oil on the nail, it is important to have your mouth on the
mouthpiece, because as soon as the wax or oil touches the hot nail it will produce
a think amount of vapor, which can then be inhaled.
Because some types of nails can get so hot, before packing it again it is important
to let the nail cool down first.
Unlike a bong, pipe, a dab rig isn’t designed to catch anything on fire.
Instead, the nail that gets heated up with a torch, and concentrated cannabis
extracts are then “dabbed” onto it.
Dabs have such a high level of concentrated THC that with just one hit a user can
get the same results from what would take 4 or 5 big hits off a typical bong, pipe,
or joint.

Part 2- Dab Equipment

Types of Dab Equipment

There are many pieces of equipment that go into making a “dab rig”.
A Dab Rig is the entire, complete system, with all the pieces in it.
Here are the various parts that make up a Dab Rig.

Dabber:

The first thing needed is the “Dabber”, also commonly called a “wand”.
The dabber is a tool to transport the oil/wax concentrate to the nail.
Dabbers are made out of anything from glass to stainless steel to titanium (Ti).
There are different shapes of dabbers, some with a ballpoint head, and others with
a flat one. Dabbers with a ballpoint head work best with oily, stickier concentrates,
while flat heads work best to cut and break into shatter or harder concentrates. If
you are low in cash, some people use things like this instead of buying dabbers:

◉ Dental picks
◉ Knives
◉ Paper clips
◉ Glass stir sticks

The Glass Piece:

There are literally thousands of different designs of glass pieces to use when
dabbing.

They are basically like a typical glass smoking bong. The main difference is the
nail, which sits on it like a bowl on a glass bong.
Glass rigs for dabbing greatly range in price from $30 to over $1000.
The price increases as the quality of the glass goes up.
There are many types of shapes, height, width, and types of glass rigs.
Glass doesn’t have to be expensive. If on a budget, glass rigs can be made at home
out of cheap materials.
Some popular brands of glass rigs are:

◉ Chameleon Glass
◉ Grav Labs
◉ Pulse Glass
◉ Purr Glass
◉ Hitman Glass

Glass rigs come in many different types of styles.

Nails:

The nail sits on your glass piece and after heating it with your torch, it heats your
wax or oil above the point of vaporization.
Nails come in Male or Female styles.
Titanium nails come in 3 different sizes.
10mm, 14mm, and 18mm.
If you use a downstem or a slide, the size of your nail should match the size of the
downstem/slide that you use.
Here's a pic of female domeless titanium nails sizes. Left to right: 18mm, 14mm,
and 10mm.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

After you have figured out the correct joint size, now you need to know whether
your rig requires a female or male domeless nail.
When you purchase your rig you will know wheat it needs as far as male or female
from the description or what the salesperson tells you if you are buying it in person.
Female nails fit around your glass joint.
Traditional or standard oil rigs use female titanium nails.
Male titanium nails on the other hand, need to go inside of the glass joint.
If your water pipe uses a downstem or a slide, then it will most likely require
a male titanium nail.
Adjustable Nails and All-In-One Domeless Nails are best suited for those who have
multiple rigs of various sizes and joint styles (male and female), who would like
one nail to move from one to the other.
There are 4 types of materials for nails commonly sold for use with glass rigs.
1. Quartz

2. Glass

3. Ceramic

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

4. Titanium (Ti)

The best materials for nails are Titanium, Quartz or Ceramic.

Titanium nails are great because they are very difficult to break, and they stay
hot for a long time. They are the most popular type of nail, also called “Ti” nails.
When choosing a titanium nail it is important to make sure it is a Grade 1 or Grade
2 titanium product to ensure safety.
Generally, they are more reliable in terms of daily use than other types of nails,
but they can often disrupt the flavor of the concentrate.

Characteristics of Titanium Nails:

◉ Generally priced higher than quartz nails
◉ Very strong and less likely to break
◉ Lifespan can be years if properly maintained
◉ Heats up quicker than quartz nails and holds heat for a longer period of time

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 16

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

◉ Need to be seasoned before use. (Removing polish and other unwanted

materials that coat the titanium nail upon purchase.)
◉ Curious about how seasoning works? Check out our guide to seasoning a
titanium nail
◉ Titanium nails give off an odd taste related to metal burning, but this is
mostly related to an incorrect or lack of a seasoning process

Quartz nails are considered the best for savoring the terpenes in concentrates,
meaning that you can get a really great taste.
Quartz nails can last you a very long time with care.
Quartz nails are similar to glass in that they take a little longer to heat than the
Titanium nail. Quartz nails are less money than Titanium nails.
Just like glass, quartz nails are prone to cracking from extensive use. But quartz
nails can last you a very long time with proper care. They tend to cool down
quicker than titanium nails do.
This can be problematic at times because the concentrate might melt without
vaporizing it as much as it should be.
Quarts nails typically are available as standard or Honey Pot domeless nails.
They do not hold heat as long as titanium nails do, and they take longer to heat
up.

Characteristics of Quartz Nails:

◉ Generally priced lower that titanium nails
◉ Composed of weaker material, and more prone to breaking
◉ Shorter lifespan generally than that of titanium nails. Can range from a few
months to a few years depending on treatment
◉ Takes longer to heat up than titanium nails
◉ Heat dissipates quickly, leaving the consumer with less time for functional
use after heated
◉ Some consumers prefer the taste of quartz nails
◉ No need to season before use. Ready to use right out of the package.

Glass Nails are what most users start off with.

However, glass nails are prone to heat cracking over time.
It can be difficult to achieve a satisfactory dab each and every time when using
glass.
Glass nails are not very effective and in our opinion should be avoided.
They can break easily and tend to cause more problems than titanium or quartz
nails.
Although, if on a tight budget, glass nails are usually low cost.
Ceramic Nails are somewhat new to the cannabis market.
They are nice because they hold heat a long time and give a nice clean hit.
But ceramic nails can crack or shatter if heated too long.
When using a ceramic nail, it is not supposed to be heated all the way until it is
glowing red.
If it starts glowing red, it might crack or shatter.
Ceramic nails are non-porous, so they don’t require and “seasoning” (we will
explain more about seasoning shortly).
Also, ceramic nails are chemically inert, making it medical/food grade product.
Ceramic nails take considerably longer to heat than Ti, glass or quartz nails.
They require users to heat the nail for approximately 120 seconds and to let it cool
down for a minute or so before dabbing.
On a positive note ceramic is great for retaining heat.
Often making it’s possible to take more than one dab from heating it once.

Dome vs. Domeless Nail

The nail in a dab rig can be either a dome, or a domeless nail, meaning, as it
sounds, either with a cover on it, or without one.
As you shop around for dab rigs, you’ll notice that some nails have domes and
some don’t.
As with nail materials, there’s a lot of debate about whether domed or domeless
nails are best.
Domed nails are infinitely safer, and they help to hold in the vapor so you can
inhale as much of it as possible.
Also, the glass dome looks really neat and covers up the nail nicely.
However, some people don’t like them because they must be slid into place, so
domeless versions are also available.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Dome Nails
The dome is a glass enclosure
that slides over the stem of your
rig to shield you from touching
the nail and it traps the smoke
so it can be inhaled.
The nail that is used with a
dome is small and can fit
underneath the dome cover and
slide into the rig.
Some nails are adjustable and
can be raised up or down to
equal the size of the dome.

Domeless Nails
Domeless nails are longer and wider
than dome nails, and have larger
heads.
Domeless nails are sturdier and are
made of metal or ceramic.
Domeless nails do not require the step
of placing the dome over them before
taking the hit.
But it is important to not burn yourself
when using domeless nails, since it is
easier to do than when there is a dome
protecting the hand from the heat.

Seasoning a Nail:

Without properly “seasoning” (preparing) your new titanium nail, your essential oil
might have a metallic taste.
Just like with cast iron pans, if you cook on an unseasoned cast iron pan, the food
will taste odd.
Seasoning your nail will also remove polishes from the manufacturing process off
of the surface of the nail.

How to Season a Nail:

1. Place the nail on the joint of the rig. (At this point, you'll know for sure if you
bought the correct size nail).
2. Take the mini torch and evenly heat up the titanium until it starts to turn red
hot. (No need to overheat the nail at this stage).
3. Using a dabber, dab on the essential oil concentrate to the cup of your hot
nail and "coat" the areas you want to be seasoned.
4. Allow nail to cool down a little bit and repeat Step 3, up to as many as five
times.
5. Congratulations, the nail is prepared for use.

Common Manufacturers of Nails:

◉ Silika
◉ HIVE Ceramics

Options to Traditional Nails:

Skillets, Curves and Honey Pot

Instead of the more traditional nail, some users like the use what is known as a
“skillet”, “honey pot”, or “curve”.
They operate by heating a titanium pad that is attached to a swing arm.
Then swinging it under a bell or curve and applying the dab while inhaling through
the rig.
They do not work as well as traditional nails in our opinion and often result in
smoke loses.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Carb Caps Method

A carb cap is either a dome
(quartz, glass, titanium, ceramic,
etc.…) with a small hole, or
multiple holes, that allows a tiny
amount of air to enter while the
heat becomes trapped inside.
Carb caps are good for lower
temperature dabbing.
Low temp dabbing occurs when
a dab is done at a lower
temperature and the heating source is covered with a carb cap while inhaling.
The result is the heat gets trapped and causes the concentrate to completely
vaporize efficiently, leading to more powerful, flavorful dabs.
The lower the temp, the better flavor the dab will be, because the terpenes are
more present at lower temperatures.

Blowtorch:
In order to heat the nail, a blowtorch is needed.
The fuel the torch uses should be butane.
Propane gets too hot too fast and is not as safe to
have lying around as butane is.
As for torches, hold off on buying an actual
blowtorch.
They are too big and too powerful for what you are
trying to do.
Also, they are very dangerous.
Look for mini-torches instead.
If you are scared of using a torch, there are safer options out there such as:

Vape Pen

Vape Pens function similarly to electronic cigarettes except for the fact that they
allow you to insert your own dry herbs (cannabis) or oil & wax concentrates into it.

How Do Vape Pens Work?

Vape pens work by producing a vapor that becomes inhalable as a person uses
the device.
The device contains a central heating component that enables it to slowly heat up
the dry herbs/oil/wax between 350 to 400 degrees right before the point of
combustion.
The result of this is vapor that is produced in the purest form.
Normal smoking devices often rise in temperatures of over a 1000 degrees.
This can burn the product and result in harmful toxins and unwanted residue
inhaled into the lungs.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Benefits of A Vape Pen

Vaping is the purest method of smoking and as a result it is the less harmful to the
body.
Less toxins are inhaled when vaping and that means better health for the user.
No more nasty toxins and residue being inhaled means less pollution to your lungs
and reduced chance of becoming sick.
Vapor pens are extremely small and portable, usually able to fit right into a pocket
or carry around very easily.
The vapor that is exhaled from the unit is virtually odorless which makes vape pens
great for outdoor use.

E-Nail
E-nails are quite convenient.
They are more expensive, but
they eliminate the need to use
a torch and that is a nice plus.
E-nails also allow great control
since it is possible to set them
to a precise temperature.
Electric nails are often metal
boxes with a port for a coil, a
switch or two, and a PID that
gauges your coils current
temperature.
Usually the gauge can be turned on separately from the coil to allow the user to
prevent themselves from getting burned.
Coils come in two different sizes; 16 and 20 millimeters, and will only work with
nails that have been designed for coils of that size.
Setting a temperature is important to the overall experience considering that the
main feature of the unit is maintaining the adjustable temperature steadily.

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 25

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Using a carb cap is essential as well, causing the chamber to billow up during a
low temp dab after it’s thrown on top.

Why go electric?
The benefits of going electric for the nail’s heat source makes the decision to buy
one easy.
The nail will be cleaner because it’s not burning the hash but rather vaporizing it
at the optimal temperature of your choice.
They minimize the expense of the butane that is needed for the blowtorch.

The Health Stone

The Health Stone stand is the fastest
way apart from vapor pens to do dabs.
It only requires a triple flame torch and
some oil.
No waiting for the heating up, and no
dome.
The Health Stone is made from a vapor
stone with lots of tiny holes that allow
the concentrate to drop into the stone
and eventually vaporize.

How To Clean A Dab Rig

All dab rigs accumulate oil and sediment and get dirty over a period of time.
They all eventually get clogged and will be unusable.
Getting into the habit of cleaning it regularly will help it stay clean and avoid large
deposits.
“Reclaim”, or “reburn” is the leftover dab that gets stuck on the rig.
Reclaim can be gathered and used again as a new concentrate, or it can even be
included in a joint.
You can purchase a special attachment that’s designed to help scrape it off and
reuse it.
To clean a dab rig you will need:
a. Rubbing Alcohol
b. Pipe Cleaners
c. A bowl
d. Paper Towels or Cloths

First, pour some rubbing alcohol into the rig and let it soak for at least 10 minutes.
This should help to loosen up the reburn and other residue.
The alcohol will become a darker color.
Pour out the alcohol and repeat the process.
Next, use the pipe cleaner and a little more rubbing alcohol to get in the cracks
and clean it all out.
Next, let the rig dry completely.

Part 3- How To Make Hash Oil

Let’s start with the latest craze for making hash at home, the “Rosin Technique”.

Rosin Technique

The Rosin technique, or “RosinTech”, is an easy way to safely make dabs at home.
It’s chemical-free, explosion-free, quick and easy!
Here is what you will need to do it:

◉ Hair Straightening Iron (one with adjustable heating levels preferred)

◉ Parchment Paper
◉ At least 1 gram of Dried Cannabis, Kief, or Bubble Hash

Step 1- Fold a piece of the parchment paper in half and put some cannabis in the
middle

Step 2- Set the straightening iron to medium-low heat (230 to 300 degrees F) and
then squeeze the parchment paper with a lot of pressure for about five seconds

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 28

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Step 3- Open the paper and iron and remove the flattened, heated starting material
(The bud should be brown, or darkish green now, and should be flat. If it’s not flat,
do it again and press harder)

Step 4- Repeat the process two or three times

Step 5- Allow the Rosin to cool before scraping it off the parchment paper with
either a razor blade or a dabbing tool (wand)

That’s It!
You will see a ring of oily resin around it.
This is exactly what you’re looking for.
You will be able to pull a 7% to 12% return of a translucent (and dabbable) solvent-
less oil, which is as high of a percentage as expensive extraction machines.
10% of 10 pounds would be 1 pound of hash oil.

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 29

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Reported THC levels with the Rosin Technique have shown numbers between 50
percent and 75 percent THC, similar to that of high-quality water hash, but much
easier to do!
The same exact process can be used to make dabs out of kief in a rolling box or
to refine bubble hash.
The use of a hair straightener is new to the cannabis industry, but the history of
Rosin Tech is long.
In ancient times, humans used to pack cannabis in a hemp bag and hold it over a
fire until the rosin began to come out of the bag.
They would then scrape the rosin off and smoke it.
They used to call the rosin, “red oil”.
The ease of use and quality of finished product produced from the Rosin Technique
has motivated some manufacturers to focus on producing pressing machines for
the commercial cannabis industry.
The Rosin Technique has a lot of producers of expensive solvent based extraction
machines worried.

How To Make BHO (Butane Hash Oil)

First off, Cannabis Training University
is not responsible for any accidents
or wrong doings with this guide.
CTU does not recommend using
butane for extractions, since the
Rosin Technique is safer and gets as
good of results, the whole butane
method should be “old news” soon.
Butane is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and
ALL extractions are to be done
OUTDOORS only!

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 30

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

But, since so many people out there are using butane extractor machines, and are
interested in BHO, we will discuss how to accomplish it here.
BHO is the most common type of extract on the market and has a variety of names
(wax, shatter, crumble, oil, errl, honeycomb).
BHO generally tests between 60 percent and 90 percent THC, making it the
strongest concentrate on the mainstream market.
Do not ever make BHO inside a house!
Go outside where the air is flowing if you must do this method!
What you’ll need:

◉ 1 ounce of uncut marijuana

◉ Extraction Tube

◉ Butane Canisters

◉ Coffee Filters

◉ Stove/Double Boiler

◉ Collection Dish

◉ Silicone Parchment Paper

◉ Concentrate Container

(One can of butane typically should be enough to extract a full tube of dried
cannabis)
Step 1: Pick up your 1 ounce of high quality dried cannabis flowers

Step 2- Pack the cannabis in the extraction tube

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 31

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Step 3: Drip the butane through the opposite end from the side you packed it in

Step 4- Attach coffee filters tightly around the tube on the end you packed the
cannabis in

Step 5- Collect the drippings that go through the tube into the collection dish

Step 6- Keep straining the butane though the extraction tube until the can is empty,
and collect all the butane in the collection dish

Step 5: Put all the liquid from the collection dish into the pan. It should be a golden
brown liquid

Step 6- Take the collection dish and put it in a larger frying pan filled with hot water
until your mixture starts to bubble

Step 7- Change the water as needed

www.CannabisTrainingUniversity.com | Copyright Cannabis Training University- All Rights Reserved 32

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Step 8- When the oil stops bubbling it is complete

Step 9- Take the leftover cannabis concentrate and place it on a non-stick silicone
parchment paper to dry

Step 10- Let the BHO cool

That’s It! Butane Hash Oil ready for use!

*Tip
When the liquid dripping from the extraction tube appears completely
transparent, that’s the indication that all the THC oils from the cannabis have
been extracted from the tube.
If it is not transparent then more butane can be run through the tube.

Everything There is To Know About Dabs, Dabbing, Wax & Hash Oil

Is Dabbing Safe?
Dabbing can be dangerous. The extraction process is more of the cause than the
actual act of dabbing though.
Some people try to do their own extractions with butane and do it indoors and end
up blowing up their homes!
Improper butane ventilation is the main problem and danger with doing
extractions.
Butane is highly flammable and it tends to sink, meaning that if you use it indoors
or don’t ventilate the room adequately, it could cause a serious problem.
It could lay dormant, and as soon as a cigarette is lit, and an ash falls, boom! The
wall is blown away!
Wear eye protection, as well as gloves and always keep a fire extinguisher near.
Never smoke cigarettes or cannabis, or anything really, and avoid having an open
flame around when doing any kind of extraction, even outdoors.
Also, dabs can be very potent. Sometimes so potent that they can cause the user
to almost overdose, or pass out.
Although it seems impossible to actually overdose from cannabis, if it were ever
going to happen, dabs would be the cause.
Sometimes the oil used is contaminated, and can lead to health hazards.

Safety Tips with Dabs

◉ Don’t overheat the nail
◉ Use a mini torch, not a huge one
◉ Clean the rig regularly (remove the reburn)
◉ Only use highquality concentrates
◉ Use a nail with a dome to reduce the risk of getting burnt
(Cannabis Training University recommends and prefers solvent-less dabbing, such
as the Rosin Technique)
It is safer, cheaper, and easy to do at home.
