text acquired by M. Aurel Stein in Kashmir and donated to the Bodleian Library in
Oxford. It is written on  folios of Kashmirian polished paper in the Kashmirian
form of the Devanāgarī script with  lines per side and about  aks.aras per line,
and comprises  verses, numbered throughout. It has the following in Stein’s own
hand in the upper margin of the first side: ‘‘Read at Zirhâma, en route for Śâradâ:
Sept. , . Explanations taken from Chandra Pandit, Purohita of Śâradâsthâna’’.
His signature follows. The ‘‘explanations’’ to which he refers are no doubt the various
annotations written in the margins in English in his own hand. They consist entirely
of identifications of the Kashmiri place-names rendered in Sanskrit in the text and
have been given here at the end of the edition.

myas, of which Stein reports as follows in a signed note a page before the text begins:
‘‘This Collection of Mâhâtmyas was purchased by me in Śrînagar, September ,
through Pandit Govind Kaul. It was written by Pt Dâmodar, son of Sâhibrâm, and
by his copyist for the use of Pt Sâhibrâm who about this time was collecting materials
for his Tîrthasam. graha. The Vijayeśvaramâhâtmyam was lost on my river journey to
Bîjabrôr. M. A. Stein.’’ The manuscript has been copied on large sheets of Kashmiri
paper numbered on each side, in the European manner, with Śāradā numerals. The
Śāradāmāhātmya begins on the page numbers , the folio numbered  in the con-
tinous pencilled arabic numeration.
In his essay on the shrine of Śāradā appended to his translation of the Rājataraṅgin. ī of
Kalhan. a (vol. , pp. –) Stein tells us that he was accompanied to the Śāradā-
sthāna by Chandra Pan. d. it of Gōtheng, whom he describes as one of the Purohitas
of the Śāradā temple who reside at Gus., in September of . The scribal date
Bhādra[pada] Śukla , [Laukika]  falls in this month.
According to the colophon the text is part of the Bhr. ṅgīśasam . hitā, more specifically
part of the section of that text devoted to giving ‘‘a summary account of the sacred sites
that have come into existence in the northern tract [of Kashmir]’’ (uttaravis.ayopajāta-
tīrthasam. grahah. ). The Bhr. ṅgīśasam
. hitā exists only for the purpose of bestowing the
status of scripture on tracts such as this that have been produced to promote pil-
grimages, no doubt by the humble Tīrthapurohitas whose living these pilgrimages


secure. The literary quality of the work is low, with a good quantity of lame rep-
etition, as, for example, in kimartham āgatā yūyam. brūtāgamanakāran. am (cd)
. . . brūtāgamanakr. tyam . me (cd). The Sanskrit is generally correct. But there is
a solecism in v. d, where mucyet has been allowed in place of mucyeta (mucyej
janmaśatodbhavaih. ), and there is a lesser deviation from the learned register of the
language in prasādayitvā (c). There is a case of loose syntax in c–b: snātvā
ca vapanam . kr. tvā śrāddham . kr. tvā maheśvari || sāks.ādbhūtā mahādevī śān. d. ilyam idam
abravīt.
Verses –, containing Śān. d. ilya’s hymn to the Goddess, show acquaintance
with idioms peculiar to Kashmirian Śākta Śaiva nondualism: viśvātmikām . viśvaparām .
(b); cidvimarśamahāśaktim . (a); cintyām acintyām. cetyām. ca cidvimarśavidhāyinīm
|| cidrūpām. (c–a); and saccidvimarśavimalām . paramārtharūpām | mānapramātr. -
rahitām . sthitim aprameyām . (c–b). But the author has combined these elements
with the Sām . khya-based concepts typical of Purān. ic composition, as in gun. ātītām .
gun. ātmikām || prakr. tim . vikr. tim
. divyām . śāradām. varadām. bhaje (c–b). The result-
ing amalgam is of a kind that would be disagreeable to the sensibility of more educated
Śaiva brahmins and no doubt reflects the text’s origin outside the higher, non-priestly
brahmin sub-caste to which this sensibility would mostly have been confined.
I have standardized the orthography throughout and inserted ’ to mark the absence
of initial a in Sandhi.

This verse is evidently the source of Stein’s assertion (Rājataraṅgin. ī translation, vol. , p. ) that
Śān. d. ilya is the son of the sage Mātaṅga. That view evidently comes from reading mātaṅgakanyāsaṅgāt
in a to mean ‘‘from the union of Mātaṅga and a girl’’, which is more amusing than plausible, since he
could hardly have produced a son from any other source. In any case this reading requires us to accept
that the father has been mentioned both inside the compound (mātaṅga-) and outside it (mahars.er
bhāvitātmanah. , which is even less plausible. The meaning intended is therefore surely ‘‘A son called
Śān. d. ilya was born to a great sage of cultivated soul as the result of his union with an untouchable
girl, resembling that [girl in complexion]’’. This makes perfect sense in the context. For we are told
elsewhere that Śān. d. ilya is dark-skinned (śyāmāṅgah. [a]) and will gain the fair complexion proper to
a brahmin (tatah. prāpsyasi svam . rūpam. brāhmam eva cd) through his propitiation of the Goddess
(vv. –). Later he is told that he now has a pure complexion/caste, one that has been freed of the
defect caused by the mingling of castes: varn. asam . karajād dos.āc chuddhavarn. o ’si sām . pratam (cd).
The name of his father is not mentioned. He is indeed a shadowy figure, who sends a proxy, the sage
Nārada (in v. ), when Śān. d. ilya communicates with him telepathically.

I have resorted to this conjecture () because there was never a Mt. Mahādevī in Kashmir to my
knowledge, () because the Mt. Mahādeva of my emendation is on the contrary a major feature of the
Kashmirian religious landscape (see, e.g., Somadeva, Kathāsaritsāgara .; Ks.emarāja, Śivasūtravi-
marśinī, p. ; Nīlamata ; the Mahādevagirimāhātmya of the Śarvāvatāra; Jayadrathayāmala, S. at.ka
, Ghoratarāsādhana, Pātālasiddhipat.ala, vv. c–: kaśmīrāyām . (f. r) śūlabhedam . *toyapūrn. am
