1. The document outlines the field procedure for overhauling a power transformer, listing 20 activities such as testing prior to overhaul, oil draining and filtering, winding inspection, vacuum filling with nitrogen gas, and post-overhaul testing.
2. Key steps include internal inspection of the core and coil assembly, replacement of gaskets, vacuum drying and heating under nitrogen, oil filtration and impregnation, monitoring of insulation resistance and polarization index values, and final testing after overhaul.
3. Tests are to be carried out according to agreed terms and standards like IS 1866-2000, and oil samples sent to approved laboratories for dielectric strength and dissolved gas analysis testing.

1 Testing prior to OH 2 Oil draining - Under Nitrogen or dry air displacement Recording IR - With motorized/digital Megger 3 values - Temp. Correction factor chart as agreed to be used - Initial sludge recording - Tightening of spacers - Tightening of core bolts - Tightening of core bolts - Insulation resistance Measurement prior and after tightening with Internal inspection 500 / 1000 V Megger 4 of Core Coil - Coil clamping bolt tightness Assembly - Check for coil healthiness - Possible physical verification - Re-taping leads - Removal of paper sample for chemical analysis DP test & tensile strength Re-tapping of leads - Insulating creep / kraft (dried) paper to be used 5 whenever necessary - Cutting of gasket by special machine to achieve proper finish only. Gasket cutting and - ANABOND 610 or equivalent Adhesive to be used for necessary 6 replacement sticking. - Proper surface cleaning to be done with cleaner and then after gasket to be applied. - Min 2 ft over and above normal level. 7 Top cover lifting - Access for a person to go inside and sit on top part of core for various activities. 8 Bell cover lifting - At least by 0.5 ft to replace gasket - Confirming of manual operations. Tap changer 9 - Confirmation of proper contact alignment and contact resistance. servicing - Verification of tightness of fixed moving contacts. - Recording of time taken to reach vacuum 750 mm + around less Evacuation & than 10 Torr. Heating of core and - Vacuum leak rate should be less than 50M bar Lit/Sec. after 5 10 winding by hours (1.3 M bar = 1 Torr, Lit=approx. tank capacity in liters, sec. Nitrogen gas filling =time in seconds for which duration the drop is observed. and heating - Duration:- 36 hrs. per cycle after reaching 755 mm or 5 Torr. - testing at site with calibrated equipments - BDV: 60 KV+ Oil Filtration - Filtration by high vacuum filter plant strictly at temp. less than 11 process 60°/65° C in filter plant. - vacuum must be read by vacuum gauge. - - Vacuum over filled oil not to be braked for min. 8 hours. Vacuum Oil impregnation 12 pump to run for 8 hours. process - Temp. of filled oil to be kept at least 50° C. 13 Oil circulation in - Duration: - Min 48 hours for main tank under transformer covered Main and OLTC condition. - Temp. 60°/65° C or less but not less than 55° C. tank - Cold oil circulation for min 8 hours before stopping circulation. - Improvement in IR value over original (before OH) IR values by at least 15% over initial values at common temp. (if IR value are below 500 Mega ohm at 30° C) IR values - Comparison of IR values strictly at common temp. 14 monitoring and - IR value recording to be done at every 4 hours during circulation improvement of oil. - IR value under Nitrogen medium to be recorded once in a heating cycle. - The P.I. improvement should be at least up to 1.3 for HV winding and 1.3 for LV winding if they are already in the range of 1.1 prior to OH or atleast 15%. - If P.I. is above 1.5 prior to OH the P.I. the same range should be Polarization index achieved after drying out & oil circulation. 15 monitoring and - This above subject to present condition of insulation paper. . improvement - The above also subject to achievement with consideration of new oil only If paper condition deteriorated & old oil above value may not be achieved 16 Air venting - Two times prior to charging - 24 hours for 33 KV class transformers after stopping all oil 17 Settling time disturbances in main tank. - Air venting, testing, painting is permissible during settling time - Cold trails of HV breaker for Buchholz Trip OTI & WTI trip.
