PRACTICE SET
MAGNETIC EFFECT OF CURRENT
ONE MARKS QUESTIONS
1. When a magnet is brought near a magnetic compass needle, it deflects in general.
Why?
2. Why do not two magnetic fields lines of force intersect each other?
3. What is a magnetic field line of force? What does it indicate?
Ans: The path along which unit North Pole moves in a magnetic field is called
magnetic field line of force.
4. How is the direction of magnetic field at a point determined?
Ans: The field at any point is along the tangent to the line of force at that point.
5. How does the strength of magnetic field determine?
Ans: The relative strength of the magnetic field is shown by the degree of
closeness of the field lines, being closer in the stronger regions near the poles.
6. How can it be shown that a magnetic field exists around a wire through which a
direct electric current is passing?
7. What conclusion do you get from the observation that a current carrying wire
deflects a magnetic needle placed near it?
8. A magnetic compass needle is placed just below an insulated straight conductor
carrying a current from North Pole to south. In which direction will the N-pole be
deflected?
9. What is the shape of the magnetic field produced when current is passed through
a straight conductor?
10. Imagine you are facing one end of a solenoid, such that the current flowing
through it is in the clockwise direction. What kind of magnetic polarity is
produced at the end facing you?
11. How is the intensity of magnetic field around a solenoid going to change, if the
magnitude of current in it is increased.
12. The number of turns in a solenoid are increased five times, without any increase in
current. How is its magnetic intensity affected?
13. Why does a conductor carrying current experiences force when held in a
magnetic field at right angles to it?
14. Name two metals used in making an electric fuse wire.
15. Mention one similarity of a solenoid and an electromagnet.
16. What are factors on which the strength of an electromagnet depends?
17. The magnet field inside a solenoid is uniform. Why?
18. What is the nature of the magnetic field inside a solenoid?
19. State Maxwell’s corkscrew rule.
20. The magnetic lines of force produced by a current carrying circular coil are circular
near the wire but they become straight and parallel at the centre of the coil. Why?
21. How will you locate a current carrying wire concealed in a wall?
22. What is the purpose of soft iron core used in making electromagnet?

2. Write two properties of magnetic field lines.
3. What types of pattern is produced by straight conductor carrying current? What
does it represent?
4. Consider a circular loop of wire lying in the plane of the table. Let the current pass
through the loop clockwise. Apply the right-hand rule to find out the direction of
magnetic field inside and outside the loop.
Ans: The magnetic field lines will move at right angles to the plane of table, such
that they move upward inside the loop and downward outside the loop.
5. What is a solenoid? Draw the pattern of magnetic field lines of a solenoid through
which a steady current flows.
6. A magnetic compass shows a deflection when placed near a current carrying wire.
How will the deflection of the compass get affected if the current in the wire is
increased? Support your answer with a reason.
7. How does the strength of the magnetic field at the centre of a circular coil of a wire
depend on (a) radius of the coil (b) number of turns of wire in the coil
8. Suppose a current flows along a horizontal conductor in east to west direction.
What will be the direction of magnetic field at points: directly below and directly
above.
9. What is an electromagnet? Draw a circuit diagram to show how a soft iron piece
can be transformed into an electromagnet.
10. What are the factors on which the strength of an electro magnet depends?
11. On what factors do the force experienced by a current carrying conductor placed
in a uniform magnetic field depends?
12. What is the function of commutator in an electric motor?
Ans: The current is made to pass in a fixed direction.
