A Publication of The Middlesex Deputy Sheriffs’ Association

Dear Members:

This letter is an update, to let you the “Unsung Heroes,“of our association know what has been accomplished thus far,
a result of your generosity in our new Making Dreams Come True Program. We have recently accepted the case of a young
16 year old terminally ill girl who is dying of cancer. She comes from an extremely poor family, has lost her hair, her looks
and all her hope for any future. She has worn out clothing, worn out shoes, and none of the other things that all young girls
love. In addition her family, which consists of a single mother and two younger sisters, who are all desperate to save her
from pending death, were facing eviction from their sparsely furnished rented apartment.

Her case was brought to our attention by our Association Chaplain Father John Crispo. Once notified, we went into action.
Thus far we turned her despair into a little bit of happiness. All she wanted was to look like other girls her age, have some
clothes and her own bedroom set. We are having a custom wig made and fitted for her, and her clothing needs are being
addressed. We are also in the process of purchasing her a bedroom set. She and two younger sisters, prior to her current
illness, were sleeping in the same bed with their mother. The few poor items she called clothing were neatly folded and
piled in a small crate on floor. Each child had their own small crate of badly worn clothes that we would probably use as
rags. In addition, we are in the process of locating a lap top computer and printer for her educational use at home. If there
is anyone willing to donate these two items, please contact me.

With your outstanding help in this new program, we can continue to bring a few bright rays of happiness into the lives of
other poor children in similar situations. If you could see the expression of joy that is on her face because of the small
actions we were able to take on her behalf , it would make you cry. She is now looking forward to receiving these items
as a result of your incredible assistance and the generosity of two of our advisory board members (who have donated
$1000.00 to help the family with other expenses). We will be advising the membership further as this and other situations
continue to evolve.

If you have the ability to contribute additional funds to the new Making Dreams Come True Program, it would be deeply
appreciated. As I mentioned in my previous letter to you, this program will be one of the major priorities of the Middlesex
County Deputy Sheriff's Association from now on. “I would like to think of each of you as the Guardian Angels of this
new program.”

Sincerely yours

M.Michael Giacoppo

Dear Member:
It is my pleasure to announce that the spring 2006. Commissioning for all new Reserve Deputy Sheriffs’ and those who
missed the annual January Commissioning, will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at 7:00 PM at the Holiday Inn,
Woburn, MA (Exit 35 off Rte 128 North or South. For directions call (781) 935-8760). Also to advise all of you about
our many accomplishments during the past season attributed to our Association by you the Reserve Deputy Sheriff’s.

The membership once again played a vital and important role in serving the Middlesex community you have worked
hard to fulfill our goal of serving the forgotten citizens of Middlesex, namely our Senior citizens and our hospitalized U.
S. Military Veterans, by providing dedicated, selfless, volunteer service throughout the Commonwealth. As a reserve
deputy sheriff you have participate in numerous community based programs that provided healthy meals to our Senior
citizens, food and financial support to families in need, and provided important services on behalf of our youth.

Over the past year, through hard work and dedication you have been credited with providing more than 24,000 hours of
volunteer community service in the cities and towns of Middlesex. Since the creation of the Sheriffs Community
Outreach Program four years ago, you have provided more than 75,000 hours of volunteer community service, which is
equal to 360 hours of volunteer service each week of the year. Thanks to your generous support of our Community
Outreach Unit we were able to finance a series of community based programs and sponsorships at the Chelsea Soldiers
Home and the Edith Norse Rogers Memorial V.A. Hospital, and related support for the Brockton, MA and Northampton,
MA V.A. Hospital.

Our donations, hard work and dedication led to the creation of a patient/visitors park at the Chelsea Soldiers Home,
complete with two handicap swings, an outdoor eating area for the patients, park benches for visitors, and decorative
gardens and landscaped grounds. The total estimated value of the volunteer construction work, new furniture, etc,
exceeded $80,000.00. Additional fund raising events throughout the year provided $12,000 for our college scholarship
program, which was distributed in the form of twelve $1,000 scholarships to qualified high school seniors during the
summer 2005.Our Association also provided money in support of our many other philanthropic causes including a
$1,500 donation to the Lymphoma Society, $1,000 to the Chelsea Soldiers Home, for a Student Nurse Scholarship and
more than $1,000,000 on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy.

The Sheriffs' Crime Prevention Unit, Motorcycle Unit, and Traffic Enforcement Unit have all been actively involved in
serving our community by providing more then 16,000 hours of volunteer law enforcement services to the cities and
towns of Middlesex.During the past year, our Association sponsored and presented programs relating to drug and alcohol
awareness, domestic violence awareness, and crime prevention, In addition our members provided significant assistance
during the resent Democratic National Convention, held in Boston

Each member of the Middlesex County Deputy Sheriffs Association should be proud of our many accomplishments over
the past year, and should recognize that each member who performed their eight hours of voluntary community services
as a reserve deputy sheriff of Middlesex did their part to fulfill the mission of our Association.

We all take for granted that we can feel safe in our towns, and in our homes. This is never the case for a person who is a
victim of domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence have few safe havens. Their homes trap them in a cycle of
terror, which all too often results in a victim becoming injured or murdered. Victims of domestic violence often suffer
in silence, ashamed of letting someone know that they are being abused. They often feel demoralized and possess a bro-
ken spirit, yet they are tied to their attacker because of a variety of complex and interwoven factors.

The Middlesex Deputy Sheriffs' Association has been the leader in providing assistance to victims of domestic violence
for more than ten years. Each year the Sheriffs' DoVES Unit strengthens its resolve to work hard on behalf of the vic-
tims of domestic violence, and towards keeping victims safe from further acts of abuse. The DoVES program was the
first to develop the Domestic Violence Emergency System, a portable emergency alarm system, that could be easily
installed in a victim's home. When the victim activated the Unit during times of pending danger an alarm would auto-
matically alert our central station to dispatch police to the scene. Today, in this sophisticated era of ever changing tech-
nology, the DoVES Units has been expanded to include sixty portable cellular telephones that were kindly donated by
the SPRINT PCS and the WIRELESS FOUNDATION. Thank you for your outstanding commitment and support

The following 15 Police Comments were taken off of actual police car videos around the country.

#15 "Relax, the handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll stretch out after you wear them awhile."

#14 "Take your hands off the car, and I'll make your birth certificate a worthless document."

#13 "If you run, you'll only go to jail tired."

#12 "Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second? In case you didn't know, that is the average speed of a
9mm bullet fired from my gun."

#11 "So you don't know how fast you were going. I guess that means I can write anything I want on the
ticket, huh?"

#10 "Yes, Sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't think it will help. Oh .. did I mention
that I am the shift supervisor?"

#9 "Warning! You want a warning? O.K., I'm warning you not to do that again or I'll give you another ticket.
"
#8 "The answer to this last question will determine whether you are drunk or not.Was Mickey Mouse a cat

and step in monkey DOO."

#6 "Yeah, we have a quota. Two more tickets and my wife gets a toaster oven."

#5 "In God we trust, all others we run through NCIC."

#4 "Just how big were those two beers?"

#3"No sir we don't have quotas anymore. We used to have quotas but now we're allowed to write as many
tickets as we want."

who can post your bail."

The Marine
A soldier or sailor understands the concepts of duty, honor, and sacrifice.
I wish our own Congress could understand it also.
This is a poem being sent from a Marine
to his Dad.
For those who take the time to read it, you'll
see a letter from him to his Dad at the bottom.
It makes you truly thankful for not only the
Marines, but
ALL of our troops.
We all came together, Both young and old To fight for our freedom,
To stand and be bold.

Peace and not war, Is what

In the midst of all evil, We stand our some people say. But I'll give
ground, And we protect our country my life, So you can live the
From all terror around. American way.

I give you the right To talk of your peace. To stand in your groups, and protest in our streets.

Hey Dad,

Do me a favor and label this "The Marine" and send it to

everybody on your email list. Even leave this letter in it. I want this rolling all over the US; I want every home
reading it. Every eye seeing it. And every heart to feel it. So can you please send this for me? I would but my
email time isn't that long and I don't have much time anyway. You know what Dad?I wondered what it would
be like to truly understand what JFK said in His inaugural speech. "When the time comes to lay down my
life for my country, I do not cower from this responsibility. I welcome it."
Well, now I know. And I do. Dad, I welcome the opportunity to do what I do. Even though I have left behind a
beautiful wife, and I will miss the birth of our first born child, I would do it 70 times over to fight for the place
that God has made for my home. I love you all and I miss you very much. I wish I could be there when Sandi
has our baby, but tell her that I love her, and Lord willing, I will be coming home soon. Give Mom a great big
hug from me and give one to yourself too. Aaron

CRIME PREVENTION UNIT

There is an old saying; "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." The Middlesex Deputy Sheriffs'
Association Crime Prevention Unit proves the wisdom of this saying every day!

At scheduled events throughout the year, the Crime Prevention Unit conducts safety and crime prevention pre-
sentations throughout the County. These programs empower the residents of Middlesex with the knowledge
that allows them to avoid the likelihood of becoming a victim of crime, and provides the residents with the
confidence needed to get involved in their community. By educating the residents of Middlesex, the Crime
Prevention Unit provides a cost-effective way to reduce the frequency of crimes. The sponsorship of Crime
Prevention Programs also provide an excellent means of building a positive working relationship between the
law enforcement community and the residents of Middlesex County. More importantly, the work of the Crime
Prevention Unit directly improves the quality of life for every citizen of Middlesex, and is directly responsible
for lowering the incidence of certain Part One Crimes. Thanks to the efforts of the Crime Prevention Unit, the
residents of Middlesex County can once again call t
heir neighborhoods "home," and be proud of where they live

Help Wanted with the Guardian
As many of you are aware, the Guardian Newsletter is our Association’s primary means of com-
municating to our members. We would like to be able to release an issue at least quarterly. The
increase of activities in 2003 prevented this from happening and we are in dire need of writer’s or
editors to assist. There are no special design or application skills required, if you own a computer
and have some writing skills and have participated in an event, a few paragraphs can be forward-
ed to our designer and the “artsy” portion can be done by someone else.
If you have interest, email both:
Michael Giacoppo at www.MiddlesexDeputySheriff.com and also
ONeil LeBlanc at www.ojleblanc@Comcast.net (in subject, note Sheriff’s Association)

We will also be updating our site so that current newsletters will be on-line.
