Brief Description of Classroom Setting

Chinese, Arabic, Korean and Spanish.

2. All learners are adults.

3. The topic of this lesson is “food”. Specifically, teacher introduces some foods in

supermarket.

4. There are individual work, pair work and whole class work in this class.

Pre-lesson Inventory

Lesson objectives:

1. Content objectives: Enable students to identify common foods in supermarket and discuss

what kind of food do they like?

2. Language objectives:

Enable students to use “a glass of, a packet of, a bottle of, etc.” to modify uncountable

nouns.

Enable students identify countable/uncountable nouns.

Enable students to express their idea in the sentence pattern “What kind of food would you

like? I’d like ______. /I’d like to have____.”

Teaching materials: Youtube video for listening activity. (Appendix A)

Sheets of paper for speaking activity. (Appendix C)

Exercises of listening activity. (Appendix B)

LISTENING AND SPEAKING LESSON PLAN 3

Cloze worksheet (Appendix D)

Equipment needed for class: Doc cam, laptop.

Assignments to collect from students: None

Special room arrangements: Movable desks and chairs.

Warm-up: Brainstorm (5 minutes)

Purpose: This activity can motivate class and activate the schemata. This is an activity about

vocabularies. In this activity, students are able to think about the words what they have learned

before. Meanwhile, it lays a foundation for this class.

Procedures:

1. Teacher provides a word they may familiar with. For example, the word is “cream”.

2. Students have 3 minutes to think about other words about food whose initial letters are c,

r, e, a, m. Students must give at least 2 words in each category. They can write the words

they learned last class or they knew before.

3. After 3 minutes, teacher collects students’ answers. In this step, students can shout out

the words they come up with.

Transition: Teacher follows up by eliciting learners’ response and word list on the board.

Teacher uses these foods to transition into the listening activity.

“Yes, it’s common food in our life and we cannot live without them. So how can you quantify

them?” Then, teacher introduces countable/uncountable nouns briefly.

Listening Activity 1: Multiple Choice (15 minutes)

LISTENING AND SPEAKING LESSON PLAN 4

Purpose: This activity helps students listen to the gist. This video is a conversation in

supermarket. There are many words with food in the video. Students can understand

countable/uncountable nouns in the activity.

1. Teacher shows some slides with target or related expressions of listening. Students read

these expressions after teacher (5 min)

2. Students scan the questions very quickly.

3. Teacher plays a conversation in supermarket. (2 min)

4. In worksheet, there are 4 multiple choices. Students should finish the tasks individually at

the first time (2 min). Teacher will play the video again. During the second time, students

should check the answers. (2 min)

5. Teacher collects feedbacks and gives correct answers. In this step, students should give

reasons of answers. (3 min)

Transitions: Now teacher will play the video again. Students should finish exercises in next

activity. (1 min)

Listening Activity 2: Cloze (7 minutes)

Purpose: This activity makes students get to know the countable/uncountable nouns briefly and

they have a concept of how to modify these nouns.

Procedures:

1. Teacher plays video. During the listening, students should fill in the blanks in the script.

(2 min)

2. Teacher plays video again. In the second time, students should check their answers. (2

min)
LISTENING AND SPEAKING LESSON PLAN 5

3. Teacher gives students right answers (1 min)

Transitions: After listening activity, students look at the listening conversations. Teacher asks

students “Do you have any questions or words you don’t know in conversations?” If they have,

teacher explains; if not, teacher skips to next activity (2min)

Speaking activity: “What kind of food would you like?” (18 minutes)

Purpose: The activity demonstrates language-focused learning with target sentence patterns and

words.

Procedures:

1. Teacher shows pictures of food in supermarket. Maybe some students don’t know the

words, so teacher will teach them how to read. (5 min)

2. Teacher writes the sentence pattern on the board “What kind of food would you like? I’d

like …/I’d like to have…” Students should read after teacher. Teacher has a short time to

explain “I’d is the abbreviation of I would”. (3 min)

3. Teacher tells students they should work with this type of question and answer with food.

4. Teacher hands out to students the worksheet. There are many foods on worksheet (the

food in step 1). Students should go around the classroom and find classmates to ask the

questions. If there someone would like this kind of food, he/she can write down the

person’s name on the corresponding box. For example, the food is spaghetti. Student A

should ask classmates, “What kind of food would like?” If Student B says “I’d like some

spaghetti.” The student A should write B’s name on “spaghetti”. (10 min)

5. If students finish early, teacher will give them opportunity to ask classmates from other

countries what they favorite food is.
