TOPIC 10 : ACID AND ALKALI

Aim :To define operationally acidic, alkaline and neutral substances in terms of
the colour change in litmus papers.

Apparatus and Materials :Blue litmus papers, red litmus papers, water colour
palettes with grooves, lime juice, baking powder,
pepsi, detergent and sugar water.

Steps

1. Put each substance to be tested into the grooves of the colour palette as
below:
Groove 1 : Lime juice
Groove 2 : Vinegar
Groove 3 : Baking powder
Groove 4 : Detergent
Groove 5 : Sugar water
2. Dip the tip of both red and blue litmus paper into each groove containing
the substance.
3. Make an observation on the colour change of the litmus papers.
4. Record your observation in the table provided below.
