Why?
At the present time we can’t generate enough assessment growth to support
a zero percent tax increase. Despite receiving only eight cents of every tax
dollar (the provincial and federal governments get the other 92), London has
to deliver a number of mandated and regulated services such as police, fire,
ambulance, health unit, and conservation authorities. The city is mandated
by the province to deliver these services, despite the costs. Frequently, when
municipalities such as London cannot reach collective agreements with
emergency services, arbitration results in increases in personnel costs well
beyond the rate of inflation.
It would be impossible to find the tens of millions of dollars required to
sustain existing programs – parks, rec services, bicycle/walking paths,
seniors’ centres, libraries, child-care grants, downtown and Old East
renewal, protection of heritage, affordable housing, transit for the future —
without tax increases to meet the cost of inflation.
Community work:
There are many committees that I have given my time to in the past like,
crime and safety with the city of London, school accessibility development,
Special Education (SEAC), District Parent Council, Salary Committee and
Monsignor Feeney Foundation. I am a community volunteer on the Western
Fair Board and I am an active supporter and contributor to the Cancer
Society and the Terry Fox Run.
And b) the most important issue for the ward in which you're running?
I find it very difficult to sum up a & b only with one important issue. For
London, leadership in developing the new way London will do business with
focus on taxation relief, employment growth and infrastructure that will
adjust and expand to accommodate new economic growth only touches on
what is important to Londoners.
In ward 11 we need to support growth for small business, road and sewer
maintenance, a transportation plan for proper traffic flow and safety for
alternate modes of transportation, look into what is needed to keep our
neighbourhoods safe, promotion of local services within ward 11,( our
library, etc.). Let me remind you I don't have the advantage of knowing what
the constituency thinks, if elected I would know more.
