The fist meting of this group was held later that month, nd at its meeting ia December, 1938, in New York, it was agreed (o undertake the Standardization of Gimensions of cocket-welding ftings and 10 refer this project to @ new rafting subgroup. One of the most important dimensions of this type of fiting requiring standardization wns considered to be the dimension from the centerline of the fing to the ‘oottom of the socket, sine from the stand-point of the designing engineer, this dimension ovens the location of adjacent pipe with reference to die entire piping layout. Another Important item for consideration sas the welding fillet dimensions ‘The drafting subgroup held meetings in Chicago, Deuoit, and New York in March, 1939, land May and October, 1940, respectively, and at the last named meeting the completed ‘raft of the proposed standard was discussed and further revisions were suggested. When Anplied to the September, 1940, drat, these changes produced the May, 1941, draft which seas prepared for distribution 10 industry For ericise: and comment This distribution resulted im a number of helpful comments. The members of the subgrouy agreed by mail that many of the chonges suggested should be incorporated in the revised draft (December, 1941). Progress on the approval of the standard was delayed by the a aller which few more changes were added to make the proposal acceptable to all concerned. The revised draft (Api, 1946) was then submited tothe members of the sectional committee for letter ballot vote. Following. the approval of the sectional committee, the proposed standard was next approved by the sponsor bodies. and presented 0 the ASA with recommendation for approval ss an Ametican Standacd. This designation was given on December 9, 1946. 1960. it was agreed that the standard aeeded a complete revision and simultaneously ‘hat it should be expanded 10 cover threaded fitings and plugs, then covered by MSS SP. 4 und SP-50. A ‘Task Force worked lligently for four years before arriving at a dralt ‘which it felt was acceptable, They also found that ratings were outdated and eliminated ‘te 4000 th classes of threaded ‘iting, assigned pressure-lomperature ratings for a number ‘of merils. and converted the socket-weld fiting ratings (© 3000 and 600 Ib. Following approval by the Sectional Committee and Sponsors, ASA approval was granted on January 2B, 1966, ollowing designation changes of ASA to ANSI and Sectional Committee to. Standards Comminee, Subcommitice 6 began consideration of changes in 1969. Early in 1972, changes in the pressure class designations, materials, and clarification of wording were apreed upon snd submited for approval. This approach was granted on Jone 20, 1973, The work of development of the 1980 edition of BI6.11 began in 1975 wen the commitice began cousideration of comments and proposals for change that were received. The development procedure was arduous ia that a number of ballots were taken wh elicited many additional comments and counter proposals. The major changes included sn expanded scope for heer definition, requirements for eoaformance marking, 2a annex sith provisions for proof or burst Wsting and the ine Fatlowing approval by dl was geanted on October 6. 1980, Tn 1982, American National Std Committee B16 was reorganized as an ASME ‘Commitee operating under procedures accredited by ANSI. Following approval by the Standards Commitiee and ASME, final approval by ANST ws ‘on March 4, 1991 Th 1996, metric dimensions were added as aw andependent hut equal standard 10 the ich nits. Following approval by the Stands Committee and ASME, this revision to the 199) fdition of this Standard was approved ax an American National Standard by ANSI on December 16, 1996, with the now designation ASME B16.11-1996, 1h 2000, the Standards Committee, ASME, and ANSI approved sm addenda to this ‘Standaed to semove pastial compliance ftings and nonstandord materia requivements. Due tw an ASME policy change concerning the publishing. of addenda, the intended addenss ‘changes have been incorporated into this B16.11-2001 Eaton. ‘Suygestions for improvement of this Standard are weleome.
