BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE
INTRODUCTION:
Business Intelligence has two basic different meanings related to the use of the term
intelligence:
Gathering, storing, accessing and analysing data to help business users make better
decisions.
DEFINITION OF BI:
The concept of BI is brought up by Gartner Group since1996.
It is defined as the application of a set of methodologies and technologies i.e., Web Services,
DOTNET, data warehouse, data mining, etc. to improve an enterprise operation effectiveness,
support decision making to achieve competitive advantages.
“Business Intelligence is the continual process in which the organization collects, integrate
and analyse data in a structured way in order to apply the resulting information and
knowledge to decision making process.”
SOFTWARES OF BI:
BI includes several software for Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL), data
warehousing, database query and reporting, online analytical processing (OLAP) data
analysis, data mining and visualization. Some of the soft wares are given below:

COMPONENTS OF BI:
OLAP (Online Analytical Processing): OLAP provides summarized views of business data
and is used for reporting, analysis, modelling and planning to get the most out of the
business.
Data Warehouse: Data warehouse is the significant component of BI. The data warehouse
supports the physical propagation of data by handling the numerous enterprise records for
integration, cleansing, etc.
Data Marts: It is a collection of subject areas organized for decision support based on the
needs of a given department for example finance has their data mart, marketing has their own
etc.
Real time BI: It allows for the real time distribution of standards/metrics through emails,
messaging systems or interactive display.
There are several popular applications through which users perform BI tasks: Spreadsheets,
enterprise portals for searching, performance management applications that enables
decision makers to track key performance indicators of the business using visual dashboards.
Web Analytics: enables understanding of how visitors to a company`s website interact with
the pages e.g. which landing pages are likely to encourage the visitor to make a purchase.
MOBILE BI: Mobile BI that presents opportunities for enabling rich BI applications for
knowledge workers on mobile devices.
CLOUD BI: Cloud BI hosts the software on the internet, reducing storage costs and making
access to organizational data and insights faster and more convenient.
i. FASHION INDUSTRY:
In fashion industry BI is used to track latest trends.BI uses to estimate market demands
accurately and to analyse consumer behaviour through past and present purchase.
v. UTILITY INDUSTRY:
In utility industry BI is used for utility solutions and to find why an issue is occur and can
monitor the supply chain.
FUTURE OF BI:
In this rapidly changing world consumers are demanding more efficient and faster service
from business. To stay competitive companies must exceed their consumer`s demands .BI
users are beginning to demand real time BI they will come to expect up to date and fresh
information. In near future people will become more dependent on the use of real time BI, as
people expect to get information on a single click. Also in near future it will become more
democratized.
ADVANTAGES OF BI:
Fact based decision: management is able to see detailed, current data on all aspects of
business.
Improves sales and negotiations:
Identifies Opportunities: with BI firms can identify their more profitable costumers
and understand the reason of their loyalty.
Faster collection and dissemination of information.
Set more profitable rates
DISADVANTAGES OF BI:
Pilling of historical data
Cost
Graphical data issue includes font, size, and colours.

Limited use
Time consuming implementation
Most of data is pulled automatically while some need to be refreshed manually.
CONCLUSION:
On the whole BI seems to providing users what they promise. BI has evolved over the
past 10 years to rely increasingly on real time data.
Enterprises now demand quick results and BI will provide that.
.This is pretty good solution consolidation of BI and can be very instrumental in
getting your entire management team on one page.
