is the distance to the displacement caused by the friction between the contact surfaces
of the particles and their density

settlement: gradual collapse of a structure as effects of different physical phenomena

or by application of loads

Bearing capacity: as much as a floor can withstand

load: total force acting on the ground or on a structure

Effort: force per unit area on which said force is applied. The efforts can be normal,
sharp or torsional.

admissible effort: Maximum value of contact effort applicable to the design and
construction of a foundation. The allowable support capacity is only a fraction of the
ultimate support capacity, and is calculated by applying an appropriate safety factor to
the latter

applied effort:

Stratum: tabular body, or layer, of sedimentary rock that can be visually differentiated
