(Vibration Isolation: Transmissibility and absolute response to base

excitation ; Relative motion frequency response; Use of frequency response
data to determine natural frequency and damping ratio)

1. A certain pump has a mass of 23 kg and has a rotating unbalance. The

unbalanced weight is 0.2 N and has an eccentricity of 2.5 mm. The pump
rotates at 1000 rpm. Its vibration isolator has a stiffness of k = 7300 N/m.
Compute the force transmitted to the foundation if the isolator's damping
ratio is (a) 0, (b) 0.05 and (c) 0.7.
2. A diesel engine of mass 300 kg and operating speed 180 rpm is found to have
a rotating unbalance of 1 kg-m. It is to be installed on the floor of MIOT
hospital building in Chennai for purpose of emergency power generation. The
maximum permissible force that can be transmitted to the floor is 8000 N
and the only type of isolator available has a stiffness of 1 MN/m and a
damping ratio of 5 percent. Investigate possible solution to the problem.
3. A certain factory in Guindy Industrial area in Chennai contains a heavy
rotating machine that causes the factory floor to vibrate. The owner of the
factory would like to operate another piece of equipment nearby, and hence
the vibration expert measured the amplitude the floor vibration and
reported to the owner as 0.01 m. The mass of the equipment is 1500 kg and
its support has a stiffness of k = 20,000 N/m and damping ratio of D = 0.04.
Calculate the maximum force that will be transmitted to the equipment at
resonance.
4. A compressor weighing 1000 kg operates at 1500 rpm. The compressor was
originally attached to the floor building, but it produced undesirable
vibrations to the building. To reduce these vibrations to the building, it is
proposed that a concrete foundation block (2.2 m x 1.8 m size) be
constructed that is separated from the building and that the compressor
then be mounted to this foundation block. The soil on which the concrete
foundation block rest has an equivalent stiffness of 79.2 kN/m. The unit
weight of the concrete is 23 kN/m3. Determine the height of the concrete
foundation block so that there is an 80% reduction in the force transmitted
to the soil.
5. The vibration on the floor in a building is simple harmonic motion at a
frequency in the range 15-60 Hz. It is desired to install sensitive equipment
in the building which must be insulated from floor vibration. The equipment
is fastened to a small platform which is supported by three similar springs
resting on the floor each carrying equal load. Only vertical motion occurs.
The combined mass of the platform and the equipment is 40 kg and the
equivalent viscous damping ratio of the suspension is 0.2.Find (a) the
maximum value of the spring stiffness, if the amplitude of transmitted
vibration is less than 10% of the floor vibration over the given frequency
range and (b) the maximum force developed in the spring over the given
frequency range.
6. A building frame as shown in Figure 1 is subjected to a harmonic ground
excitation (amplitude = 15 mm and frequency ω = 200 rad/s). Find the
amplitude of vibration of the floor (mass m). Assume the mass of the floor
as 2000 kg and the stiffness of the columns as 0.5 MN/m.

7. The 0.5 kg mass shown in Figure 2 is attached to the frame with a spring of
stiffness k = 500 N/m. Neglect the spring weight and any damping. The
frame oscillates vertically with amplitude of 4 mm at a frequency of 3 Hz.
Compute the steady state amplitude of motion of the mass.

8. The following data were compiled by driving a machine on its support with a
rotating unbalance force at various frequencies. The machine's mass is 100
kg, but the stiffness and damping in the support are unknown. The frequency
of the driving force is f Hz. The measured steady-state displacement of the
machine is X mm.
Estimate the stiffness and damping in the support and
Estimate what percentage of the rotating unbalance force is transmitted to
the foundation at 6 Hz.
