Current status on the electromechanical work

 Main access tunnel for power house has been completed with 2.5km length and width of
8m. The excavation of main access tunnel has been completed by drill and blast method.
 Emergency exit flat form of power station is under construction.
 Ventilation pipe installation has been completed.
 Power station construction has completed as a 4 stories building.
 All the major electromechanical equipment were installed and power station finishing
works are going on.
 Underground powerhouse cavern and transformer cavern excavation process has been completed.
 Installation of 2 pelton turbines with 6 jets and main inlet valve for each turbine unit have
completed.
 The hydraulic units of main inlet valve of turbines have been installed.
 Main generators have been installed with firefighting units and stator was covered from
concrete layer.
 Excitation systems and stand by DC battery backup have installed in association with
generators.
 Bus duct construction with flexible joints also have completed from main generators to
main transformer units.
 Two transformers rated at 76MVA have been installed including cooling systems and
transformer neutral grounding.
 The pressure shaft (618m) excavation has been completed by using raise boring machine
but steel liner is not installed yet
 Valve chamber, valve chamber access tunnel and shaft tank excavation have been
completed using drill and blast method.
 Visited main headrace tunnel (15.6km) and main headrace tunnel are excavated using
tunnel boring machine.
 3.7 km have to be completed in main head race tunnel.
 Currently head race tunnel boring is conducting slowly with the recommended new tunnel
boring method of Netherlands consultant on water leaking problem with project.
 It will take 3 and half years to complete the headrace tunnel construction.
 Visited valve chamber and upper end of pressure shaft.
 Valve chamber in under construction.
 During the visit water leak at a higher flow rate was observed.
3. Observations on the field visit

a. During the field visit we were unable to observe the generator stator and rotor installation
because the generator has already been installed and cover with concrete walls. Regarding
to generator we observed the generator excitation system, stand by Dc battery backup, bus
duct and generator fire fighter unit.
b. During the field visit we were unable to observe the turbine and main inlet valve of the
turbines because main turbines were already installed and main inlet valves were also
covered. But regarding to this section we observed the hydraulic and PID based control unit
of the main inlet valve. Also we observed that turbine unit repairing spaces.
c. During the field visit we were unable to visit two main dams of the Uma Oya Multi-Purpose
Development Project.
d. During the field visit we obtained a chance to visit main head race tunnel, main access
tunnel to power house, upper end of the pressure shaft, lower end of surge shaft, valve
chamber and valve chamber access tunnel.
In tunnelling they have used rise boring machine to excavate pressure shaft, the pressure
shaft excavation was already completed and that can be presented in following diagram.
 The head race tunneling is doing using tunnel boring machine and currently head race
tunnel boring is conducting slowly with the recommended new tunnel boring method of
Netherlands consultant on water leaking problem with project. In head race tunnel 3.7 km
range has to be excavated. The tunnel boring machine is using 1st time in Sri Lanka for such
kind of mega project. The tunnel boring machine can be shown as follows,

The main access tunnel to power house, link tunnel, valve chamber and valve chamber access
tunnel are excavated using drill and blast method.
