Having one party in power isn’t good
O
ur state and nation seem to run
better when political power is
split between the two parties.
And it is not just government
that benefits, there also seems to be
more civility across the land when this
takes place.
It seems when one party doesn’t have
control of the U.S. House of Represen-
tatives, Senate and the White House,
both sides are forced to work together
and find common ground in order to get
things accomplished.
Simply put, compromise is not the
evil that many portray.
The same can be said in Oklahoma
when the House of Representatives,
Senate and Governor are all from the
same party.
Today, at all levels, politicians seem to

cast votes that will best position them
and their party for the next election
rather than what is best for the nation,
state, and even at the local levels in city,
school and county offices.
Once in office, too many elected offi-
cials seem to have more of a marketing
plan than one of deliberating and com-
promising to come up with great policy.
For those who adamantly oppose
Obamacare, they lost their chance to fix
it by not including the other side in the
conversation.
Last year many were surprised
when the late Republican U.S. Sen.
John McCain went back to Washing-
ton, D.C. while taking cancer treat-

ments to announce he would not vote
to repeal and replace Obamacare
unless there was a bipartisan conver-
sation involving both parties.
One publication went as far as label-
ing McCain a traitor because he did not
follow the party line.
As a result, even with all of its faults,
Obamacare remains in place, not
because of McCain’s vote but because
Republicans refused to have real bi-
partisan conversation in order to find
compromise. And for the record, this
is exactly what happened when Obam-
acare was first implemented when
Democrats were in power.
As we see it, McCain had it right
because until there is compromise from
both sides of the aisle this hot potato
will be on again and off again depend-
ing on which party is in power.
That brings us to the state of Okla-
homa. How many can honestly say
that our state government is better off
because one party is in control of the
Oklahoma House of Representatives,
Senate and Governor’s office? We can’t.
Breaking up the one-party-rules-all
system at the state capitol sounds more
appealing than ever. Not because we
represent the other party, but because
we want what is best for the state.
We have a chance to do just that when
we choose a new governor this No-
vember. We believe Oklahoma will be
best served if we elect Democrat Drew
Edmondson to be our next governor.
