Mays, you are growing your independ- ence and self care skills. You were determined to zip your jacket up on your own. You didn't even want me to clip it in to start with. You cer- tainly were determined that you could do it! After a few tries you decided that I could help you to start it, then again you told me that you wanted to do it on your own. You had quite a few tries own your own. Made it clear that you didn't want my help yet, but you were willing to accept help from an older peer. Your friend was a great help to you, she was patient and didn't take over from you. Mays, you were happy to have help to hold your jacket taught so that you were able to zip it up. All by yourself! You had set yourself a goal and de- termined you were able to achieve it and you were so proud of your self when you were able zip your own jacket.
Mays, I will continue allow time & opportu-
nities for you to take re- sponsibility for your own care. Next would you like to try putting own your own shoes and socks? Or even help- ing other children just like Jawaher helped you. When an older peer teaches a younger peer its called tuakana teina.
