Okay, I was reading through the forum and I saw several posts asking about hood measurements
(across the eyes) for different raptors, so I decided to post what NAFAHH has in their book. This
Apprentice should help those of you with that hood program ;D
EDIT: I just looked at the picture again and it's saying that these are the measurements for the base of
the hood pattern.

Hi Skyrider
The measurements you have given relate to the "Jack Mavro'" Pattern Anglo indian hood
mjhoods (found in "falcon in the field") .... that pattern measures by the throat strap.

I just used the picture as an example ;D

Do you know the relation on that Mavro hood (the chin strap length to the rest of the hood)?

As far as I am aware .... Mavro just reproduced the pattern by incraments and tried them on as
many birds as he could.... giving the throat strap measurement as the "mark" of the size.... he
Stoops like a would have had many patterns at his disposal (as he was well travelled) and he chose the best
Stuka!! practical pattern to produce in his books... thats as much as I know on how it came to be.

Having said that Hendrick Slijper produced the "Canon" in the 1950's.... so Mavro could have
used that to make his pattern.... using the throat strap to "difference" his pattern.

I was wondering if anyone knew of hood sizes in inches to what bird (that is how my favorite
pattern measures not in mm.). All I know is that 4in. will fit a FRT. Thanks for any help anyone
can provide.

Posts: 92 and a second question: how can the measurment behind the eyes fit all the birds when some (for
ex. falcons) have a different shape of the head then for ex. goshawks?

you redraw the pattern, they have instructions on how to do it in frank beebes compleat
SA General falconer. this hood works, and remember, a birds head is thicker from behind the eyes, than
at the eyes themselves, so the panels stay away from the eyes.

i used a arab-style nr1 and a half hood for my appys common buzz

To change the pattern you can also pop it on a photocopier and just
make it bigger or smaller and measure the part you need to each
time you make it smaller/larger

Use caution when using a copier, they tend to distort the image in one plane or the other. Not
every copier does this. I use a scanner and change the size of the image digitally. If you don’t
okiereddirtha have access to a scanner and use a copier, then rotate the image 90 degrees every time you re-
copy.

This pattern generator works with the behind the eyes measurements.
Posts: 575 You can also take the throat strap measurements listed above and divide them by 1.34 and it will
get you close to the behind the eye measurements.
