1 Introduction
This report is for the topographic survey conducted for Himadri Foods Pvt. Ltd.
(hereinafter the Client) in Panauti, Kavrepalanchowk. Topographic surveying is
conducted in order to map the topography of a land. Topography includes the shape,
configuration, relief, roughness, or the three-dimensional characteristics of the
Earth’s surface. Topographic surveying is, therefore, a means to determine and map
the configuration of the Earth’s surface on the surveyed area, and to locate natural
and artificial features on it. Contours generated for the purposes of the Client are
drawn in the interval of 1m, which spaces the major contours at 5m intervals.
2 Background
Himadri Foods Pvt. Ltd. is an upcoming food manufacturing company who intend on
producing snacks, beverage and bakery items. The client wish to set up the
production plant at Dhaltar,Panauti and because of the steep nature of the proposed
site a topo map was deemed necessary for the proper planning of factory setup. On
the request of the client a topographic survey was carried out from November 25 and
a topo map was prepared with contour interval of 1m.
3 Site Location
The location for the Client’s factory is in Panauti, a small town in the
Kavrepalanchowk district of Bagmati Zone, Nepal. Area of the site is an estimated
1Ha. Site is easily accessible via motorway, a short drive of 2-3 hours from
Kathmandu.
Project boundary coordinates (at the most extreme points)are: 27°34'27.84"N,
85°33'20.75"E; 27°34'28.07"N, 85°33'21.78"E; 27°34'32.92"N, 85°33'20.96"; and
27°34'33.12"N, 85°33'17.94"E. The boundary spans nearly 500m in perimeter and

7 Methodology
Since the topographical map of the area is to be prepared in 1:500 scale with 1m
contour interval, sufficient survey stations have been fixed during the stage of
horizontal controlling.
For detailed topographical survey, tachometric method of survey has been adopted.
The X, Y and Z co-ordinates of every detail was recorded by the Total Stations
instrument in the site.
After setting the instrument over a known survey station, the back sight was fixed on
the prism reflector placed over a known point and then started taking details on the
ground. The details include roads, footpath, houses, physical and man-made
features, hydrographic features such as rivers, streams etc. Some special landslide
signs such as cracks; scarp areas etc. have been surveyed. All information
mentioned in the scope has been depicted from the ground. A rough sketch of
surveyed points has been maintained so that it might be useful while plotting of the
maps.
The X, Y and Z Co-ordinates of every detail has been recorded and saved in the
Total Stations and downloaded in the computer later. The further processing of all
topographic data has been done in the computer and they have been prepared the
plot file in AutoCAD format.
