Duomode window.

Our purest experiences occur when we are totally absorbed in a moment. Nothing distracts us and we are
fully focussed, open to even the smallest stimuli. For those brief seconds, life is clear. This idea of removing
distractions is at the heart of Aneeta’s design philosophy. Sleek and unobtrusive, Aneeta windows put the
barest of materials between you and the outside world. Live uninterrupted. aneetawindows.com

ave you heard of wabi-sabi? It’s an ancient Japanese

philosophy that is centred on the acceptance of
imperfection and impermanence. It’s all about
finding the beauty in objects that are flawed,
unfinished or short-lived. A good example of this is life and art —
considered beautiful because they are imperfect and fleeting. This issue,
we apply this philosophy to our interiors.
Another trend that is in line with the Japanese way of life, wellness has
become a prominent movement during the past 10 years. Of course, it is
now a huge focus in the home as it’s our personal space in which we spend
a large amount of our time. Wellness in the home can take on many forms,
from creating a soothing sanctuary to escape busy life, creating a spa-like
space in your bathroom or, of course, reducing the amount of toxins you
are exposed to in your home. As many people may already know, our
interior spaces can be a major source of air pollution. The air

expertise. Don’t forget that the construction stage usually takes at least
a year. Could you afford to take this time off to, say, project manage the
construction of your home?

Meaningful outcomes — limited money

In Series 7 of Grand Designs Australia, we followed a tiny home in
Stanley, Tasmania. In it, Phillip Murphy wanted to spend a mere
$60,000, so he enlisted his architectural mate Greg Prentice to create
a modest retreat. He used whatever materials and labour that could
be begged, borrowed or scavenged. Not precious but modest, Phillip
acknowledged his budget. Check out his inspiring and frank three-
minute clip called Stanley Windmill House on lifestyle.com.au.
The Stanley Windmill House also sits well within this issue of Grand
Designs Australia magazine — money and sustainability have a
relationship; sustainability can cost big bucks. High-capital inclusions
such as geothermal energy, PV systems, high-tech glazing and meeting
passive house standards are some ways to incorporate sustainable
elements into your build. What Phillip has proven is there are other cost-
effective ways — recycling local building materials (low carbon miles),
using natural materials such as wood (low embodied energy) and being
modest in scale and finish.

ARCHITECTURE
01 STORRS PROJECT

This epic project is an example
of truly great architecture. The

The Amado House is a
brilliantly designed residence. Amado
sliding timber screens are used
externally on traditional Japanese
homes to protect the inner layers of
shoji screens from the weather. Here,
the sliding screens have been adapted
to address Australian conditions,
moderating harsh sun and discouraging
blowflies with flywire used instead of
rice paper. We love this well-chosen
design that is specifically tailored
to the homeowner’s lifestyle.

03 ARMADALE RESIDENCE
If you appreciate great architecture and
design and want to take down some style notes,
check out the striking Armadale Residence. Despite
the whopping 260 tonnes of granite, which make
up the building’s exterior, the overall ambience of
this three-storey home on Hampden Road is one of
lightness — there’s an almost ethereal, floating quality
created by the sun refracting over the granite facade.
The internal spaces are light and open, particularly in
the living area, where the fully retractable glazed doors
open onto the adjacent courtyard. Photography by

Adjacent to a popular beach at the scenic tip
of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, the Sorrento Beach
House cuts a cleverly enigmatic profile from street view.
The forward-thinking property achieves sustainability
from both an environmental and social perspective
— it’s sensitive to its site and its contribution to the
neighbourhood as well as the long-term impact on the
lives of its inhabitants. This design has left us inspired —

05 KING BILL
The creator of this architectural wonder
is Austin Maynard Architects. King Bill is a love
letter to the historically significant, wildly eclectic
neighbourhood of Fitzroy, Victoria. It is a collage of the
suburb’s built history, its textures, its forms, its order and
its chaos. The owners, a family of four long-time locals,
wanted to build their “forever house” in the suburb they
love. They had a rare commodity, an empty garden site
among a row of two-storey Victorian terraces. The result
is a modern masterpiece that features all the essentials.

profession is rarely passed down through family
these days. It’s a rare but beautiful occurrence
when it does. A family business ofers the
opportunity for knowledge to be passed on, a close-knit family
bond, and a secure profession for future generations.
It’s particularly beautiful when the process happens
organically, or when family members come together as a result
of weaving through other paths. This is what happened with the
Light family, which has been in the furniture making business for
five generations. For father-son duo David and Adam Light of
Icon By Design, there is no doubt that furniture design is in their
blood. David’s father had a furniture factory and his grandfather
and great-grandfather were furniture craftsmen. David’s son
Adam and daughter Nicola are now the fifth generation to carry
the furniture flame.
Thanks to David and Adam’s backgrounds in engineering,
commerce and finance, they were able to come up with a clever
business model. “We are able to ofer sustainably sourced, solid
timber furniture at prices usually associated with MDF and
veneer,” David explains. The Lights ofer a two-price model: their
furniture can either be purchased and shipped immediately or,
if customers are happy to wait a little longer, they can select the
pre-order service, which gives them a 20 per cent discount.
The Lights specialise in what has come to be known as a
distinctly Australian aesthetic: clean, minimalist, elegant and
sustainable. They create mostly solid timber furniture made
from either American oak or American walnut, sourced from
FSC-certified forests in North America. And they place a high
importance on the sustainability and lifespan of the furniture they
craft. “We reject the disposable society,” says David. Instead, Icon
By Design embraces timeless design and a built-to-last ethos.

the craft which is very obvious. “I love seeing people interact with
our furniture,” he enthuses. “Solid timber has a wonderful warmth

STARTS WITH CORINTHIAN

t may be surprising, but like many of us, designer
Rory Unite took some time to discover where he
was heading early in his career. After studying
architecture at the University of NSW, fi ne arts at COFA and
props and set production at NIDA, he spent the first 12 years
of his design career in a workshop creating film props, sets
and special efects.
“I never really had a clear idea of what industry I was in,” says
Rory. “I have always followed my desire to make and create.”
When between jobs, Rory worked in a bronze casting
foundry. It was here he started creating his own pieces, which
made him question the world of art and design. “I started making
these bronze fish, which seemed totally pointless and arbitrary,
however it was the act of doing it which taught me so much
about making an object and what it says,” explains Rory. “It made
me ask the questions ‘what is art?’, ‘what is design?’. I had to make
peace with all the questions before I could move forward.”
And forward he journeyed as a few years later, while
renovating his in-laws’ home, he started implementing his
design ideas and creating his first furniture pieces. Rory started
a small bespoke furniture workshop in Avalon and while creating
furniture for The Boathouse restaurants, he found he was unable
to produce the volumes of products needed on his own. During
his travels to Java, Indonesia, he met with artisans and suppliers
keen to produce his designs.
“I have been going through an amazing learning curve over
the last few years,” reveals Rory. “Indonesia has an incredible
history of craft and the craftsmen and women I work with
are hugely talented. I love working with them and mixing
contemporary ideas with traditional methods.”
His unique furniture range is inspired by architecture, nature,
and even his own children. Each product stands the test of time
and all materials are carefully selected. Timber is sourced from
sustainable plantations that have produced timber for more than
200 years.
While it is hard to choose a favourite piece, the Omni table,
Omni bench, rattan umbrella and cast bronze Bloom chair are
Rory’s most notable designs. The Omni range was inspired
by the connection joint in furniture, and the need to flat pack
for shipping. “For me, the best thing about it, after its robust
functionality, is that it’s quite playful,” says Rory. “I would love to
see it on the shelves of a hardware store as a DIY angle bracket.”
From comfy chairs to big, chaotic dining tables, Rory prefers

natural products that feel soft and, in his words, “delicious”. His
self-proclaimed resilient, restless and curious mind will surely
create many more functional, yet beautiful designs.

learned, and the beauty was that people lived around it and
Film props and bronze casting ignited Rory’s interacted with it on a daily basis,” says Rory. “A well-designed

i f an artist said to you they didn’t love what they did,
I imagine you’d be quite surprised. After all, the very
heart and soul of being an artist is the sheer joy of
experimentation and creation. Success is oftentimes built on
pure passion. And it has to be, given the road to success can,
more often than not, be long and bumpy.
Sculptor Morgan Shimeld was lucky in that his creative
gifts were encouraged from a young age by his father. A potter
himself, Morgan’s father perhaps knew a nudge of creative
support can make all the diference and so he ensured Morgan
knew his artistry was worth pursuing. “My dad was a potter and
I was always in his studio as a young boy, helping him out and
inadvertently learning about materials and processes along
the way. I was always encouraged to explore the things I was
creatively interested in and felt validated that art was a valuable
career path,” says Morgan.
While majoring in glass work at university, Morgan worked
part-time at a Bronze Art Foundry. His personal practice evolved
slowly but surely and over many years, he moved into working
solely with bronze and steel.
“Bronze is a forgiving metal to work with in terms of cutting
and welding, and it’s also incredibly archival,” he says. “I love
the warmth and velvety texture, with a good-quality patina
on the surface.”
Morgan describes his own style as abstract, minimalist and
geometric. He explains that he is influenced strongly by the

Morgan
movements of minimalism and formalism and by deconstructed
architectural elements. He creates both solid works and wire
works, which are diverse in nature and give him the opportunity
to create balance and variety in his work. Ultimately, though, the

Shimeld
process of creation is steered by the tactile hands-on nature of
diving into a new project and seeing where it leads.
“I love being able to create objects that interest and inspire

long in the tooth to a modern marvel not short
on inspiration, Tallebudgera House was salvaged
from a holding yard in the Brisbane suburb of
Burpengary. Removed from its original mooring in the
Sandgate area — to make way for a McDonald’s — the house
featured flaking paint aplenty and weathered timber that was
more desperately dilapidated than charmingly distressed.
The owners had their work cut out for them. However, there
were too many redeeming features for Yvette Walker and
Doug Bavinton to walk away from.
“We saw the potential of the house the first moment we
stepped foot inside and fell more in love with it as we walked

DATE COMPLETED February 2017 in Tallebudgera Valley, specialist truckers were called in to
COST $600,000 execute the delicate relocation operation, which covered
140km and took place in the dead of night under the watchful
eye of a full police escort. The Queenslander now sits on
land originally part of a 160-acre homestead dating to the
1880s, with Yvette and Doug’s plot once serving as grazing
land for cattle. As such, the home had little to compete with,
structurally speaking — a rusty barbed-wire fence was the
sole inhabitant of the land, which was comprised of two-three
acres (0.8-1.2 hectares) of cleared land and a further seven
acres (2.8 hectares) of rainforest.
With originally no power, no water and no shelter, the
scene we see today is a result of the blood, sweat and tears of
Yvette and Doug, assisted by capable family and friends and a
community who pitched in wherever possible. Today, the pair
shares the home with their two young children, three dogs
and countless chickens, roosters, geese and a guinea fowl or
two. “We moved the Queenslander onto the property with
the intention of completing the demolition and restoration
ourselves while the builders constructed the pavilion and
completed structural works,” recalls Doug. “All architectural
and design decisions were made by us. We did not engage an
outside party to help with the design of the house and spaces
within the house.”
Building a home from the ground up is generally how
things go in the house building game, but this project took a
slightly unorthodox approach, instead working from the top
down. Raised 2.7m off the ground, the transformed four-
bedroom, three-bathroom Queenslander hovers above a
newly built level that boasts a self-contained guest wing, gym

standards and ensure the safety of the house
and family.

ucked into a cliff face overlooking

Currumbin Creek, this contemporary
family home seems to emerge
organically from the rustic landscape
that surrounds it. Expansive views from the living
spaces stretch across the sparkling water to the
glittering Surfers Paradise skyline in the distance.
Designed by architect Paul Uhlmann, this
unique home pays homage to its distinctive and
undulating bushland setting — the rustic contours
of the hilly landscape inspired its curved form.
A distinct design feature, the copper cladding
subtly shimmers in the warm afternoon sunlight.
“Over time, the copper cladding will dull to an
earthy colour to match the hillside,” says Paul.
Copper is a building product that is renowned
A picture window captures not only for its aesthetics, but also for its
the glorious views sustainability. It’s low maintenance, durable and
complements other building materials such as
timber, cast iron and stainless steel.
In keeping with the earthy colour palette,
shades of grey paint were used elsewhere on
the home’s exterior to blend into the
surrounding landscape.
The contemporary home is set on three levels.
On the ground floor, there is car parking, storage
and the entry with a lift. The first floor has five
bedrooms that are interconnected with sliding
walls, so the five children who live there can spend
time together when they want to, yet have privacy
when they need it. The master suite is located on
the same floor. There’s also a laundry, media room,
deck and swimming pool for the kids to splash
around in on those long hot summer days.
The main living areas are located on the second
floor, with an open-plan contemporary kitchen,
bar, roomy dining space and cosy lounge area.
There’s also a guest bedroom, which will convert to
a master bedroom when the children are older.
The main living spaces are light filled and
inviting. There’s prolific use of warm timber
throughout, which bodes well with the home’s
natural bushland setting. The slimline kitchen
features ample storage and seating positioned to
capture the breathtaking views beyond. In fact,
the entire front of the living area on this level can
be opened up, connecting the home visually to the
landscape that sits well beyond its walls. Whether
it’s enjoying a cool drink on the outdoor lounge,

This contemporary family home cleverly

The glass encased lift connecting all floors a family dinner or a quick bite for breakfast
makes moving between levels easy in the kitchen, there are delightful views
to savour. Another feature of the design
is the distinctive timber staircase with
blackbutt wall, which can be seen from the
see-through lift.
With the scope of the project spanning
three levels, and given its steep location,
structural considerations weighed in heavily
in the design process. Large steel members
were required, with the major member
concealed beneath the curved wall.
To Paul, this is a unique project for many
reasons, notwithstanding the scope of works
completed. “It stands apart from other
designs because of the complexity of the
site and scale of the building program on a
relatively small site envelope.”
Embracing the natural curves of the site,
this home expertly delivers on both form and
function, culminating in a design fit for its
inhabitants and the surrounding landscape.

efore we pick apart the details of

Masuto Residence, let’s play a quick
game of word association. What is the
first word that pops into your head
when we say “duplex”? Adjectives such “dank”, “drab”
and “dreary” might slide off the tongue. You’re likely
conjuring up images of a confined and dark space with
paper-thin walls and annoyingly noisy neighbours who
steal your Sunday paper and let their dog defecate on
your side of the front lawn. Well, throw those stereotypes
out the double-glazed window because this project by
Jamison Architects took the dowdy duplex and turned
it on its head, or should that be roof? Either way, the
resulting elongated duplex project in the Melbourne
suburb of Aberfeldie pushes the boundaries and
rethinks what duplex living means. It not only enhances
the clients’ lifestyle, but also gives dual residence a new,
bright and breezy lease on life.
Mark and Simone were in the market for a light-
filled dual-occupancy development with a strong
indoor/outdoor connection so they could live in one
side and sell the other. They desired a home that
was architecturally unique but functional enough to
meet the current needs of their family and offer close
proximity to the city and schools in the area. “Mark
and Simone love to cook, entertain and get together to
share meals as a family so the kitchen in particular was
important,” says Mark Jamison of Jamison Architects.
“The island bench is the heart of the kitchen and a main
feature of the space where the family can sit around and
enjoy relaxed meals or use for a buffet-style set-up when
entertaining guests.”
In accordance with the brief, the duplex is spoilt with
natural light and open spaces that feel connected to the
surrounding landscape. However, the home’s greatest
success occurred in the initial design stage when the
Jamison team took their off-kilter concept to council.
Here, they pitched a design that challenged local
planning guidelines to grant the duplex’s occupants
greater livability and reduced energy consumption
without detracting from the streetscape. EDI TO R ’ S

the streetscape with a presence that is not dominated by the
commonly sighted double-garage-door arrangement.”
More than just clients, Mark, who is a builder, put
his expertise and attention to detail to good use when
constructing the Jamison plan. The same is true for Simone,
who took advantage of her impeccable sense of style when
decorating the interior, which consists of an open-plan living,
dining and kitchen space with a butler’s pantry and fridge
concealed behind a rich dark timber form, leaving a central
cantilevered stone island bench to take the limelight and the
brunt of the action — mainly meals and homework. An entry
hall leads through the ground floor and past the powder room
and laundry to an impressive alfresco scene complete with a
pool and yard.
The master bedroom (with an ensuite and walk-in robe)
and both kids’ rooms are upstairs, where a study, children’s
bathroom, separate toilet, continuous wall of storage and
family room can be found.
The richly textured home beckons visitors with its 3D
tiling that throws light around the space and almost begs to
be touched. Boosting access to sunlight is a central courtyard
and offset external blockwork blade walls that allow light to
flood the hallway and provide framed views and a connection
Perfectly placed pendants to the landscape, all while maintaining privacy between
replace traditional table neighbours. The unassuming black-stained timber-clad
lamps in the bedrooms wall that stands opposite the blade walls isn’t just pretty, it’s
functional, too, concealing the garage door and wrapping
around the utility rooms. Inside, a demure grey French oak
timber floor complements the grey blockwork and softens the
contrast between the white and black throughout.
Meanwhile, floor-to-ceiling glazing along the hallway
Fun furnishings bring the kids’ dispenses natural light and supports ventilation. The hallway
bedrooms to life is slightly splayed from the entry, to further open up the
connection to the north-facing open-plan living, kitchen and
dining space as well as the backyard.
The internal and external material palettes are almost
identical in their minimalist and contemporary natures,
helping bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor living.
This clean approach permits the colour and vibrancy from
the landscaping to stand out and extend the sense of space.
On the topic of green spaces, a side courtyard at the base of
the stairs and the two-storey void above assist the natural
cooling of the interior in warmer weather while improving
indoor air quality for a healthier living environment.
Furthermore, this enables the space to open vertically, both
visually and acoustically.
As with any modern build, energy efficiency was
considered. “We utilised principles of good solar design
to minimise ongoing energy consumption. This included
opening up to a northerly aspect to maximise natural
daylight,” explains Mark. “Passive solar design principles in
conjunction with the thermal mass qualities of the reverse
block veneer, and the proximity of landscaped vegetation,
has resulted in less energy consumption for lighting, heating
and cooling and improved natural cross-ventilation and air
quality. The overall result is a more comfortable and healthier
living environment.”
Earning its title as a “Grand Design”, Masuto Residence
offers a contemporary take on the dull duplex and shines
a light — literally and figuratively — on the potential of
thoughtful architecture that doesn’t simply follow the rules,
but makes its own.

According to the brief, the new home had to
sit alongside, and allow access to, the existing
studio/garage as well as provide direct entry
to the second dwelling from the laneway. A
keen gardener, the owner requested maximum
connection to the outdoors while retaining
some of the established planting in a more
manageable garden setting.
“The client’s requirements that the house
allow her to eventually live on one floor and
cater for limited mobility was a special design
consideration that had to be allowed for in the
way the building form was sited and laid out,”
says Sarah. “We approached the design by fi rst
breaking up the site and creating a ‘patchwork’
of indoor and outdoor spaces, public and
private zones, and small garden areas.” A new
public entry porch was created at the south
of the new house, which separates the new
dwelling from the existing garage and studio —
and the client from her workplace in the studio.
The new house was conceived as a simple
box with maximum openings to the north and
all the main spaces located along the north face
of the ground floor. Connecting directly to the
garden and outdoor entertaining spaces, the
ground floor pavilion features an open living/
dining/kitchen space and master bedroom with
ensuite and walk-in robe.
Sporting a palette of exposed concrete floors,
white walls and black-stained timber window
and door frames, the ground floor hides clever
design elements in plain sight. Need proof?
The large pivot door separating the main
bedroom from the living space can be left open,

Brighton interior is so steamy we need to take
a minute to towel off and cool down.
Home-grown Aussie heroes and the
sparkling glitterati are a dime a dozen in the
affluent coastal hub of Brighton. The likes of
Shane Warne, Chris and Bec Judd and AFL
stars aplenty have called this ritzy residential
suburb home. More than colourful beach
boxes, Brighton boasts stately, sprawling
homes and grand residential blocks. And
unlike those quintessential colourful beach
boxes, we’re more interested in what’s
happening inside the homes of Melbourne’s
second wealthiest suburb. Average incomes

GENEROUS-SIZED ENTRANCE AND HALLWAYS homebuilding firm Canny kindly invited us
inside one of the company’s recent projects in
Brighton and the results did not disappoint.
With four bedrooms and just as many
bathrooms (including two full and two
powder rooms), a trio of living spaces and a
study, the interior has adopted an open-plan
approach to family living while still allowing
for zoned spaces and privacy.
In addition to adhering to residential
codes specific to the area, the Canny crew
carefully customised the block shape and
size, taking site orientation into consideration
to maximise north light and the aspect of the
rear garden.
One of Canny’s concept homes inspired
the design but, like any of the firm’s

accommodation requirements and lifestyle.
The client requested a contemporary and

ventilation and LED lighting all make themselves known inside
this stunning home that is economically run with heating, cooling
and hot water zoned to specific areas of the house.
“It’s a million-dollar home but it’s not too precious. It’s a
practical home where you can sit back and enjoy each and every
space,” says Canny interior designer Janine Carter, adding that
Canny’s careful consideration of the architecture and design
ensured the project produced an end product consistent with the
original plans, materials and finishes. “It was important that this
home would stand the test of time and not date or age quickly.”
Like any home or human looking to halt premature aging, you
can’t go past the classics, which is why Canny introduced subtle
colour and material palettes.
The subtle palette is accentuated with punchy, luxurious
finishes such as black pivot doors and sleek, seamless joinery,
which help create a light, airy, calm atmosphere. “We used lots
of whites, light flooring, soft grey Italian porcelain tiles, marble,
timber veneers and sleek, considered, black accents,” muses
Janine. “Large-format windows and a generous-sized entrance
and hallways allowed us to create light, airy, open spaces in the
downstairs living areas.”
Over in the powder room, a unique and individualised space
welcomes rich materials including marble, brushed rose gold
tapware, a feature pendant to create a moody, dramatic space,
and a black-framed mirror that gently conceals LED lights. “The
master bedroom’s walk-in robe and ensuite were designed to
create a luxe, high-end hotel feel,” concludes Janine.
A canny built and designed interior, this Brighton home is
giving its fancy neighbours a run for their money

ydney’s new West Hotel

offers exactly what you might
expect given its premium
location, a stone’s throw from
Sydney’s hottest new district: Barangaroo. It’s
cool as a cucumber, lush as you like and has
the sexiest bar and restaurant — the Solander
— to match.
You can find the West Hotel on the
western corridor of Sydney’s CBD. This area
is experiencing unprecedented growth,
fast becoming Sydney’s newest hotspot for
food and drink. It’s luxe, it’s lively and it’s
Sydney living at its finest. It’s also close to the
waterfront and less than a 10-minute walk to
the CBD.
What’s most fascinating about the area,
though, is the attraction it has garnered from
some of Sydney’s most talented creatives and
business owners. Barangaroo is fast becoming
a melting pot of salubrious style game-
changers, fine-dining fanatics and those
looking for something seriously cool.
So what finer place to offer up a new
premium hotel? And one that tips its hat to
one of Australia’s earliest socialites: naturalist
Daniel Solander. Hailing from Sweden, Daniel
was aboard Captain Cook’s first voyage and
set foot on Australian soil in 1768. He was one
of two botanists on the ship that inspired the
name given to Botany Bay. Daniel was also,
according the West Hotel’s bar, the Solander,
“a rather short, plump man of some 13 stone,
jovial, fond of company and much in demand
in London society. A confirmed bachelor,
he was a popular conversationalist and ‘a
philosophical gossip’; with a weakness for
elaborate waistcoats”.
So, taking cues from this larger-than-life
character, the hotel celebrates the good life.
Guests will find a moody, luxurious space that
showcases a rather exciting way of “hotelling”.

A wild mini-jungle atrium connects
the hotel lobby to the Solander restaurant,
which is steered by executive chef David
Vandenabeele. David comes from Belgium,
via New York’s Langham Hotel.
The West Hotel features 182 rooms in
total, including four suites that are tucked
neatly above the atrium. These rooms present
beautifully, capitalising on plush velvet
contrasted with minimalist industrial notes.
The hotel’s jewel-cut, glazed facade was
designed by architecture firm Fitzpatrick +
Partners and provided interior design studio
Woods Bagot with a majestic starting point.
“We really embraced its difference and drew
from the crystalline geometric pattern of
the facade in creating a joined-up story
across the interior scheme,” explains Woods
Bagot’s hotel sector leader, Jacqui Senior. The
designers also drew inspiration from Daniel
Solander and his botanical profession, plus
the natural Australian environment.
Drawing from the colours and textures
of the Australian landscape, the designers
182 beautifully contemporary rooms sit within the hotel selected a palette of dark, rich eucalyptus
greens and greys, offset with the deep blues
and greens found in the harbour.
But the most impressive manner in which
the natural world has been integrated into
the design is via the organic oasis found in
the courtyard, which connects the lobby with
the restaurant. Given the hotel’s unusual
architecture and siting, Woods Bagot was
encouraged to be inventive when it came to
the interior design. Sydney hotels so often
focus on the view out to the natural landscape
but in this instance, Woods Bagot opted to
follow more European-inspired design by
creating a rich internal experience for guests.
“Contact with nature is both a basic
human and universal need,” says Woods
Bagot’s global design leader, Domenic
Alvaro. “Biophilic design, which integrates
architecture and nature — in this instance,
urban nature — is increasingly supported by
research findings of its wellbeing benefits.”
The courtyard itself is open, overlooked by
eight storeys of guest rooms yet still providing
visitors with access to the outdoors. And
it’s also open to the elements, says Jacqui.
“Sunshine streams into the courtyard on a
sunny day,” she explains. “And when it rains,
faint scents of the plants emanate and it feels
like nature.”
So, for those looking to experience a
contemporary, Australian masterpiece,
conceived with intriguing European ideals,
surrounded by the makers and shakers of
Sydney’s hottest up-and-coming scene, this is
the place to grab a botanical-inspired cocktail
and soak up the surrounds.

Designline has crafted a spacious and simple contemporary
bathroom, one that gives subtle and sophisticated focus to a
stunning water outlook. The space is clean and refined, with a light
and bright colour palette that’s effortlessly interrupted by earthen
wooden panelling. A custom-made polyurethane varnished vanity is
finished with a Caesarstone top, beneath a smooth Marblo basin. The
same refined oval shape is echoed around the room, with a Victoria
Albert freestanding tub and complementary illuminated oval mirror
completing the circular motif. A frameless shower screen looks over a
demure Parisi toilet suite, built to ensure full view of the uninterrupted
natural vista. Matt-finish marble-look tiles decorate the floor and walls,
with an underfoot heating option that continues up the smart dividing
wall and into a mounted towel ladder. A sliding door onto a balcony
provides this elegant space with even more outdoor access, while full-

eflecting the health and wellness
lifestyle of the owners, this modern
ensuite has been renovated to
match the contemporary style, luxury and
functionality of this Brisbane penthouse
apartment. With space at a premium, an
enclosure that combines both bathing and
wellness was installed. The large walk-in
glass steam room/shower replaced what was
previously a built-in bathtub. Part of the external
bathroom wall was removed and replaced with
glass to improve light in the space, as well as
allow for a view of the cityscape. The ceiling
inside the enclosed space needed to be at a
certain angle and tiled to allow for condensation
to run off into the drain without dripping on
the user. The tile selection was paramount, as
was the ratio required between the amounts
of glass used and insulated walls so that the
steam room maintained the correct temperature
and condensation levels. A new half wall was
constructed, which allowed for plumbing and
other services to be relocated within the room.
The wall beneath the window was made wide
enough to house the concealed toilet system
and suspend the black toilet pan. This “services”
wall then continues behind the vanity basins
and seamlessly into the shower. The addition of
the mirror-faced storage joinery, just above the
wall and stepped in from the outside window,
creates a recessed niche. Panels of charcoal glass
line the niche, with highlights coming from the
energy-efficient defused LED lights. The decor is
contemporary and seamlessly incorporates the
adjoining furnishings of the dressing room and
master bedroom.

“Terracotta’s great

— Narelle Hinz

N
arelle Hinz decided to build her house
in Brisbane’s Bridgeman Downs, on a
vacant block of land behind the family’s
existing home. She opted for the Hamptons
look, commissioning her husband’s son, Peter
Hinz of All Type Builders, to create a gracious,
classic home for her and husband, Marshall.
Because the build was just behind their
previous house, Narelle was on-site during
much of the process and says she couldn’t be
more pleased with the end result.
“It was a totally diferent house than what
we had,” she says. “We had a Georgian-style
home before, but this one’s in the style of the
Hamptons. I wanted something sort of relaxed
and casual, more classic.”
Narelle and Marshall have built two previous
houses together and brought their knowledge
from those projects to this home. They chose
not to use an architect, but instead used a
designer/draftsperson who prepared the
plans under their instruction to achieve their
Hamptons dream look.
“I did everything that I wanted this time
around,” says Narelle. “I tried to keep it
as close as I could to the Hamptons style.”
With that in mind, the slate look of Monier’s
Nullarbor tiles suited the aesthetic she
wanted perfectly.

Why should we include crystals as a part

of a holistic approach to wellbeing?
Crystals have been used for their powerful
healing properties for thousands of years. At an
atomic level, our universe is in a constant state of
vibration. Crystals emit high-frequency vibrations
and are extremely good at holding a stable
vibration due to their crystalline lattice structure.
We, on the other hand, are a very complex mix
of vibrations that can easily be disturbed and
become unbalanced, which makes us feel sick
and unwell. By using crystals as an aid during
meditation and mindfulness, we are able to still
the chatter of the mind and eliminate negative
thought patterns.

What are your tips for using crystals

to promote wellness in the home
and oice?
Computers, devices and other types of technology
are increasingly overcoming our homes and
workspaces. Crystals, especially shaped crystals,
not only look beautiful when styled but also offer
us a natural and tactile distraction to negate stress
and improve mood and performance. Crystals
adjust imbalances by absorbing excess energy and
can help intercept the electro-magnetic forces
from our computers and devices. They can also
be beneficial for your visitors, customers and co-
workers at the same time.

What are the best types of geode for

various home spaces, and what are
their effects?
Geodes come in all different types of formations
and it is best to look at the type of crystal rather
than its formation to decide where it is best
placed. All of the following crystals are available
in geode form:
• Living room: Clear quartz – healing properties
such as to induce patience, focus and positivity.
• Study, office or workspace: Citrine — the stone of
abundance, stimulating confidence and helping
to manifest new ideas.
• Yoga studio, meditation space or bedroom:
Amethysts — this crystal has a calming energy
and is used to de-stress and relieve headaches
Ashley Bellino, founder of Stoned Crystal
and insomnia.

How do crystals work to balance and

align our chakras?

energy centres called chakras. Our chakras are

Selection of crystals

What are some tips for styling crystals in

the home and workplace?
• Keep natural stones or crystals as paperweights
and bookends.
• Change the stones to fit in with the colours that suit
your mood, interior style and colour palette.
• Use carved stone or crystal platters on tables to
display candles, plants ornaments and decor on.
• Place crystals on the soil of potted plants or terrariums
in your home and office. A cleansed crystal will help
the plant last longer as well as look divine.
• Keep a couple of stones on the windowsill or hallway
table in plain sight. Set an intention for this stone and
let it act as a reminder.
• Put crystals by any tech devices in your home such
as in the home office or games/television area to offset
their strong electromagnetic fields.
• Use a favourite crystal as a worry stone, massage
object or for brainstorming on your desk, workstation
or even the dashboard of your car.

COLOUR TRENDS

f all the design trends we

look forward to, colour is
a permanent fixture at the
top of our list. After all, it
sets the tone for what furniture we buy, what
decor we invest in and the overall mood of a
space. But, if you’ve ever stared blankly at a
wall of paint swatches, you surely know that
choosing the right paint colour can sometimes
be so overwhelming that it’s easier to revert to
a classic white and call it a day. After all, if you
get your paint colour wrong, chances are you’ll
be staring at it for a long time before working up
the courage to repaint. In other words, you need
to be pretty convinced before committing to a
specific hue.
Just as our favourite fashion trends come and
go, interior design colour trends are not as fixed
as we might think. So while it might seem like
Scandi interiors have been the top trend forever,
those with a sharp eye are already looking ahead
to what will break out next in the design world.
The trend changes can be swift — we may
only have a matter of months before current
“it” colour ultra violet starts to feel stale — so
we spoke to the experts to learn how to select
swatches for the home and find out their
future colour predictions. Brighten up your
home today.

“I believe we will be seeing a revival of
bright and bold orange, red, purple and
yellow, and pastels in yellow, pink, green
and lilac. Neutrals will start warming up,
with warm greys complementing tan,
rust, deep red wine and terracotta tones.
I also believe the dark tones will remain
strong, particularly in kitchens.”

What colours are the easiest to start with

and which ones work well together?
A neutral colour scheme lays the foundation for any
interior style, allowing you to build on colour carefully
by adding bolder colours through accessories and art.
“Often neutrals are the key; when you have your neutrals
working together, you can begin to layer the scheme,”
says Wendy Rennie from Haymes. “Layering beautiful
neutrals with natural materials helps make a house feel
like a home.”

What colours can homeowners comfortably

use if they’re not used to using colour?
Scared of colour? Don’t be. If you’re nervous about
playing with colour, follow these easy tips. Incy Interiors
founder, Lorena Gaxiola, recommends, “selecting a
colour palette with a mixture of earthy and mineral
tones that include clay, natural white and dove grey. For
those who want to turn up the design temperature, add
a touch of terracotta”. Adriana Ajredini, interior design
manager at Cosentino, adds, “Grey is a great base colour
to start off with, something more neutral is always a
winner. We are seeing a combination of stark whites and
warm whites being used, too, and this is also a good way
of playing it safe.”

What are popular colours that withstand

the test of time in terms of aesthetics?
Brighter colours have less longevity than neutrals as
trends really do dictate these palettes. “Painting is
actually a great way to express trends through things such
as a feature wall,” says Wattyl’s Sarah Stephenson. “This
can be painted in just a few hours for just a few dollars.”
Wendy adds, “The holy grail is also finding a white that
works across a wide variety of fixtures and fittings. Try to
look out for one that contains a small amount of grey to
help hide imperfections and dust. Green tones will always
be used in interiors, as they encapsulate a connection

THE SOUR C E
COLOUR TRENDS

Dulux Autumn Colour Trends 2018 —

Kinship. dulux.com.au
Is white always a good
back-up? Or is it boring?
There is nothing boring about
picking the right white. Whites are
an important part of almost every
room as they are typically used on
most trims, ceilings and doors in a
home. “Australians are always fond
of using white as a wall colour, with
more than 70 per cent of the nation
choosing white for their interiors,”
says Fiona King from Taubmans.
“However, different whites evoke
different moods in a room. For
example, creamy whites create
a soft, romantic mood, whereas
crisp whites and grey together give
strength and energy to a room. The
key to choosing the right white is
selecting the correct base colour to
suit the mood you’d like to create
and build from there.”

198 GRAND DESIGNS

How should
homeowners go about
selecting colours for
their interiors?
Sarah Stephenson from Wattyl suggests
answering a series of straightforward questions
before making any decisions:
xWhat is the room used for (sleeping, eating,
play area etc)? This might help with the type of
colour palette you choose.
xWhat colours are in my permanent fixtures
and fittings? Our flooring and large items of
furniture, for instance, carry a lot of colour
that needs to be deliberated. The undertone
of these colours needs careful consideration.
Sticking to either a warm or cool undertone
is essential in unifying the look. For instance,
a slate floor, cool in its undertone, works
best with cool whites and neutrals and then
possibly with a complementary accent
or highlight.

ECO-FRIENDLY HOME
No excuses: we should all try to reduce
the size of our carbon footprint
WORDS ST EPH AN IE R USSO

i t’s clearer than ever that selling a home is about more

than just a great location and pretty paint colours.
Being green is a major selling point, too.
There’s no way of escaping it: wherever you go,
you may unintentionally be adding to your carbon footprint,
illustrating how wasteful and unsustainable your lifestyle
is. From the type of car you drive to your choice of grocery
provider, you wear your green credentials on your sleeve.
But however guilty you feel about your turbocharged SUV
and penchant for using plastic bags, the likelihood is that
your home is your most carbon-rich, energy-burning crime.
So, if you’re really serious about reducing your impact on
the environment, the best place to begin your quest is at
home. Eco-friendly houses don’t have to be weird-looking
and expensive. Anybody who is serious about reducing their
carbon footprint can start making changes immediately.
Read on for the savvy technology that you may never
thought about and snag some of that green living for yourself.

The world is full of innovative human and
technological advancement.
Among these great wonders of progress are
the ways in which we power our homes. While
governments are becoming more and more
environmentally conscious, the individual
need to be responsible when it comes to
renewable energy is all the more crucial.
Enter solar energy.
“Now, more than ever before, customers

Solar energy is environmentally friendly,
safe and in abundant supply. After all, the
sun makes a regular appearance every day.
Moreover, solar systems are far better for the
environment and can help offset energy costs
for homeowners. Yes, costs. That’s what it
often all comes down to in the end, doesn’t it?
“In some cases, the best return on investment
may be a solar system only, but, in most cases,
households benefit more by being able to store
the excess daytime solar production in their
batteries and drawing this power back from
their battery when coming home from work,”
explains Chris. “It is all about maximising
self-consumption and avoiding sending power
back to the grid for peanuts.”
One way you can incorporate solar into

over time, so you’re never caught off guard by
your power bill.” With no single point of failure,
accessible monitoring via the MyEnlighten app
and increased performance thanks to higher

worthwhile investment.
Tesla is also offering a solar solution with
the Powerwall 14kWh lithium-ion battery pack

Australian homes
A Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
study into the use of Bondor’s InsulLiving® building
system has found InsulLiving® homes performed
the equivalent of an 8.5 to nine-star energy rating.
QUT’s research team conducted air tightness tests
and thermal imaging on five homes constructed using
Bondor’s innovative InsulLiving® building products —
InsulWall and SolarSpan® — to measure air and heat
leakage. InsulLiving® homes averaged an air leakage
rate of 4.4, with a Mount Gambier home achieving a
leakage rate of just two, compared to a rate of 15 for
a typical new Australian home (CSIRO 2015). The air
leakage rate measures the number of times per hour
that the whole volume of air in a home is exchanged
with the air outside. Reducing air and thermal leakage
can significantly reduce the energy demand to heat
or cool a home. QUT’s Dr Wendy Miller says testing
showed InsulLiving® results in a home with much better
air and thermal tightness than traditional stick-frame
construction. Well, we’re convinced. bondor.com.au

with natural stone or its man-made
equivalent, concrete, resonates deep
within our psyche. It has always provided
shelter, a sense of stability and refuge. To this
day, it symbolises quality and permanence.
In recent years, concrete in all its structural
and decorative forms has undergone yet another
renaissance. Concrete is very much at the
forefront of contemporary design and leading
architects and designers love how creative you
can be with this ancient material.
This is nothing new. Rewind 4,500 years
ago and you’ll find traces of an ancient form of
concrete in the Egyptian pyramids (according
to recent theories). Instead of dragging or
floating stones, the ancient Egyptians carried
the ingredients of an ancient mix up the ramps
and cast the blocks by hand. In other words, the
pyramids were partly made of an ancient type of
decorative concrete, which would explain how
they were built without the use of cranes.
When the great modernists wanted to
pare back their palette, along with steel
and glass, concrete and stone were selected

sensuous internal polished concrete floors are a
mix of white cement paste and fine silica sand.
The concept of connecting internal and external
areas in seemingly one plane was made possible
by carrying the one floor material across
the threshold.
A vertical element of natural stone often
anchored modernist spaces, along with timber-
lined ceilings and white plasterboard. Concrete,
though, for its structural and decorative ability,
is key to the composition.
The natural putty grey of concrete is the
perfect canvas for shadows and changing
light conditions. Concrete is also a great
insulator. Thermally, it will soak up heat and

ranges available, concrete is now considered a
desirable finish that complements any style
or decor.
In Australia, we have renowned architects
using materials in creative ways. Renato
D’Ettorre is one example. The Italian-born
architect salutes the work of the revolutionary
engineer Pier Luigi Nervi for inspiring a
generation of architects.
“Pier Luigi Nervi transformed reinforced
concrete into a form of ‘structural plasticism’
that until then was not possible,” says Renato.
“My first private project in the late 1980s

concrete as the primary material, externally
and internally, in a way that would give concrete

rooms impossible to live in at certain times of
the day. Yet without it, a space can feel cold, dark
and gloomy.
If you are about to design your new home, or
reconfigure or extend your existing dwelling,
the time is now to address where you want
the sun allowed in. Every block of land will
always have a particular section that will let the
sunlight flood in. You just have to decide which
parts of your home are best suited to embracing

building or remodelling without being fully
aware of the influences on the land by sunlight
and orientation. So here are my top tips for this
vital element of the planning process.
xNever be fixed with your backyard area — it

only rules are building to comply with estate
covenants/council rules relating to permitted
setbacks and so on. If your home is situated on
a quiet or no-through road, creating a private
outdoor space at the front or side can be a
successful solution. Leave the dark, shady rear
for secondary spaces and service areas.
xPerhaps your property could be shaded heavily
by trees or higher neighbouring buildings, or
situated on a slope that comprises light in some
way. If so, consider going up off the ground, two
levels if you can — perhaps design and integrate
upper-floor living spaces and raised outdoor
areas to capture the light source.
x The position of the sun changes with the
seasons; consider this element carefully. There
should be provision for shading during the
summer, while allowing the lower winter sun
in to warm you and your home during those
chilly days.
xWindow placement throughout the home is
an easy factor to ignore, but adapting the shape,
style, height and position of windows can have
a huge impact on each individual space’s access
to light. Large windows placed wrongly or not
shaded adequately by overhangs or correct
orientation result in a personal pet hate of mine,
where you see homes that have to have window
coverings closed almost all day just to fight the
blazing light. That is seriously bad design and
limits the appeal of the rooms impacted.
xTraditional Australian architecture, pre the
mass housing construction boom of the 1950s
onwards, had to acknowledge the sun. It was
needed to create light inside and generate
warmth in the winter. This was done simply
by the integration of features such as window
canopies, wrap-around verandahs and deep
eaves. Could your new home embrace some of
these elements with a contemporary twist?
xWhen you consider orientation, unless you
build your home one room deep in a very long
rectangle, some rooms will win, some will lose.
All living areas, outdoor entertaining spaces
and your pool, if applicable, need sunshine and
light and should be priority. The kitchen, study
areas and master bedroom are of secondary
importance, while bathrooms, the laundry and
secondary bedrooms are at the bottom of the
priority list.
If you are about to start your new home
project, consider how you will let the sun in.
Ignore this aspect of your new home design at
your peril; it really can compromise the quality
and success of the overall design.
Be aware, if you get it wrong, I will notice, as
yours will be the home with the curtains closed
all day long!

History of mud bricks

As an alternative and less conventional
material to use, mud bricks are one of the best.
Depending on your construction needs, mud
bricks can be used for roofs, walls and floors
with amazing results.
There is archaeological evidence to show
that mud bricks were used in Minoan Crete at
a site famously known as Knossos during the
Neolithic period (6000-3000 BC). There is also
more evidence of mud brick usage around the
world from South Asia to pre-Roman Egypt.

What is a mud brick and how is it made?

Mud bricks are made of a mixture of loam,
mud sand and water. The mixture is then

1. Soundproof
Compressed mud bricks are naturally dense,
making them very soundproof. The bricks
effectively block out almost all outside noise
and can be used for a recording studio.
2. Fire and pest resistant
It’s comforting to know that the fire-retardant
properties of mud bricks give you a greater
level of safety in the event of a fire. Wood

conventional home will have little to no effect
on one built from mud bricks. While it might
not be a relevant selling point, the bricks are
bullet resistant as well.
3. Aesthetics
Well-made mud bricks look good and are a

walls. You can have them coloured or finished

renovate? Congratulations, you’re
about to enter a fantastic, often
life-changing phase in your life. This should
be a time of excitement and enjoyment and, in
the hands of the right team, it certainly will be.
But how do you find the right person or team to
design your new home or renovation and bring
your vision to fruition?
Whether you choose to work with a
registered architect, a building designer
or a draftsperson, each performs a similar
function and that is to design structurally
sound buildings and produce documentation
for council approval and, in the case of an
interior designer, create living spaces that
are functional, safe, practical, ergonomic and
aesthetically pleasing. But how do you choose
who to work with?
Who you select to work with comes down to
personal preference and budget. Depending
on where you live in Australia, you don’t
necessarily need to work with anyone to design
your own home — you can do it yourself if it
meets the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and
local council requirements. However, there’s
IMAGES Tuckey Residence no clause that says it “must be aesthetically
by Aboda Design Group. pleasing”, which, of course, in many respects, is
aboda.com.au a matter of opinion.
Many houses in Australia are not designed
by professional designers and perhaps that’s
why the standard of mass-housing leaves much
to be desired (in this writer’s opinion). Using
a professional who is skilled and experienced
will help you achieve the best outcome for your
individual site. You’ll need to find someone or
a team with whom you can work, during what
will be at least many months, and up to several
years, to design and realise your home.
As an interior designer, I believe it’s
important to work with a firm that also
employs interior designers or find teams that
can work together. The successful integration
of the building and interior design will
ensure a greater outcome than if these two
professions work independently of each other.
Adding a landscape architect or designer to

cake, as the exterior environment has a huge

answers your questions

Q We are about to renovate our two-storey duplex in Port Melbourne.

It’s a rendered brick house, built in the mid-1990s. We are interested in
sustainability and wondered what principles and building practices we could
use to improve the performance of the house and reduce our energy bills.

A This is a great opportunity to boost the insulation at least of the ceiling

beyond that of the building regulations. You could consider installing
high-performance bulk (batts) insulation as well as a thin layer of Phase
Change. This is basically a sheet made out of soy and other vegetable oils.
Its performance is equivalent to that of a 100mm concrete slab. It’s also an
opportunity to remove any air leakage by upgrading external window and
door frames. You might also consider double glazing and even introducing
solar hot water and power collection on the roof. I’d also consider introducing
natural materials inside the house. Although not items that will reduce your
bills, they do have some wellbeing aspects. I could write an essay on this!

Q What are the items that give a sense of wellbeing in a home? We have
a great living room, big TV and sound system and a backyard for the
kids. However, there is something missing despite our eforts to decorate and
keep the landscape in check outside. Our home doesn’t resonate with us.
Should we sell and try a diferent style of architecture or is there a wellbeing
specialist we can employ?

A This is a very broad question and hard to answer without visiting and
understanding the nuances of your home. I’d recommend engaging
an architect with residential experience to simply inspect and suggest a
course of action. It may be that not a lot of construction needs to be done.
There is proven research (see woodsolutions.com.au) that supports the
notion of nature affecting one’s physical state. You could consider, if this
doesn’t already exist in your home, introducing long-distance views to your
landscape, bringing some plants indoors and replacing some of the materials
in your home with natural alternatives. That is, move away from glossy,
manmade materials to natural ones. This could include furniture upholstered
in wool and cotton, and window coverings, joinery, flooring and even ceiling
linings made from wood.

Q You seem to talk a lot about being able to build cheaply. This is not
evident from our experience. We’ve just had some plans priced up and
the costs are out of control — they are double our budget. How can we possibly
achieve design excellence when light fittings, joinery and all other materials
cost so much?
Turners Beach Tree House from
Grand Designs Australia Series 6 Episode 8 A My first step is to build small. Smaller than you think you’ll need. Be
modest in your selections, including taps, tiles and finishes. There are
workable solutions using Bunnings, Caroma and, believe it or not, Ikea. The
outside of the house can be very simple and there is a lot to be said about
humble corrugated iron. If you have reached a point where the first cost plan
you have received is from the builder’s price, it’s too late. I would always
