Environmental Protection,
Quality Assurance Systems Recognized Worldwide
In July, 1992, Teijin Chemicals Ltd. Mihara and Matsuyama plants were certified
ISO 9002 compliant for all product quality control systems.
EQNET (now known as IQNET) certification followed in March, 1993, with Teijin
Chemicals being the first company in Japan to earn this designation.
Additionally, our Product Development division obtained ISO 9001 approval in
March of 1996.
Teijin Chemicals also received certification in June of 1999 for ISO 14001, which
regulates environmental management systems. With these management struc-
tures in place, Teijin Chemicals Ltd. is now recognized as meeting the stringent
requirements of a comprehensive control system accepted the world over.

• Outline of Panlite ®
AD-5503
Panlite AD-5503 is an optical grade polycarbonate resin, which has been recognized for many years as
the substrate for compact discs. Today, it is applied for Magneto-Optical Discs, Mini discs, DVD-Video,
and DVD-ROM.
Panlite AD-5503 is also used for various lenses, prisms and other optical devices in addition to optical
discs.
• Features of Panlite ®
AD-5503
1 Low level of contamination, foreign matter and impurities assures products of superb optical charac-
teristics.
2 Holds high level of transparency in a wide range of wavelengths from near ultra-violet to near infrared
rays.
3 Least intra- and inter-lot quality dispersion enables continuous production with stability.
4 Excellent moldability renders stable production of moldings with minimum optical strain.

2. Optical characteristics of Panlite® AD-5503
Panlite AD-5503 has a high refractive index and low dispersion, in comparison with other plastics. Due
to the large photoelasticity, Panlite AD-5503 has a high sensitivity to optical strain (birefrigence) against
residual stress from molding. This calls for careful selection of the molding conditions. Residual stress
from the molding can be detected with ease by monitoring birefrigence, however.
• Panlite ®
AD-5503 spectral light transmittance
Panlite AD-5503 has ample transmittance for a wide range of near ultraviolet, visible, and near infra-
red rays. Its exceptional light transmittance makes it an ideal material for next-generation blue laser
technologies.

3. Moisture absorption of Panlite® AD-5503
• Drying properties of Panlite ®
AD-5503
When molding Panlite AD-5503, it is necessary to reduce the moisture content to 0.015% or less with
predrying. To reduce the moisture content to under 0.015%, drying is required for 4 hours at a tem-
perature of 120°C. More efficient drying can be effected if a dehumidifier type of drying machine is
used.
Care should be taken not to allow pellets to absorb moisture again after drying.

Equipment to hang the flexible container
Appropriate way to transfer the resin to the receiving tank unit,
1) Hang the big bag using all 4 rings.
2) To avoid the big bag from saving or dropping, place a supporting stand.
3) Apply a cover on the receiving unit during the exchanging process of the flexible container, to avoid
contamination from entering the receiving unit.

Drying condition
The moisture content of polycarbonate resin depends on atmosphere condition.
However, at room temperature is between 0.12% to 0.21%.
In order to avoid problems such as bubbles, silver streaks, which are a result of hydrolysis, you should
control the moisture content to be below 150 ppm at drying.
We recommend to use a hopper dryer system with low due point air (< -20°C).
Optimum drying temperature is between 120°C (248F) to 125°C (256F).
Do not heat over 125°C to prevent pellets from sticking.
The drying time must be at least 4 hours before injection molding.
