Cendrawasih Bay National Park - A Wonderful Escape for Underwater

Papua is truly blessed with a number of underwater wonders tempting you to


explore its magnificence. Besides the well-known Raja Ampat, Cendrawasih Bay
National Park has fascinating nautical sight that offers you to escape from your office
routines. It is one of the best diving spot in Indonesia. Consisting of 89,8% water area,
it has been known as the largest national marine park in Indonesia. It is conveniently
situated in the north of Nabire Regency, West Papua Province.

Cendrawasih Bay is a home for 209 species of fishes including butterfly fish,
damselfish, angelfish, parrotfish, anemonefish as well as gigantic plankton-eating fish,
whale sharks (Rhinocodon typus), inhabiting its clear water. In addition, a view of
swimming turtles, dolphins and dugongs (dugong dugon) under the water has
beautified the bay. Encountering and interacting with whale sharks while diving will be
a breathtaking life experience underwater lovers do not want to miss. In spite of their
enormous bodies, they are hospitable to human.

Apart from its faunal life, this amazing national marine park also covers a vast
area of coral reefs with the best quality in the world. A survey involving the best coral
reef expert in 2006 has founded 500 species of coral reefs with 14 new species. Its
flora and fauna take an important role as life support for the surrounding. This richness
need to be conserved for the sustainability of the underwater existence as well as the
local communities of Cendrawasih Bay National Park.

To reach this splendid paradise, you can simply take a flight to Nabire with a
prior transit in Biak. Then continue the travel to the park at Rumberpon Island by taking
a longboat. While, if you choose to visit the whale sharks spot at first, your flight to
Nabire should be followed by a three-hour journey on a watercraft to Kwatisore Village.
