ABSTRACT
There are many things that are required from the starting of the day. We
cannot live without depending on the other things. All the necessary
commodities are purchased from different places depending upon the quality
and their price. So here this is a manual system where the customer needs to
go by himself to get the commodities. In this busy world it is not possible to
spend much time on shopping. So in our project we will provide an easy way of
purchasing the commodities. By using online process we can solve this
problem that is we need not move from one place to another to fulfill our
requirements.
The central concept of the application is to allow the customer to shop virtually
using the Internet and allow customers to buy the items and articles of their
desire from the store. The information pertaining to the products are stores on
an RDBMS at the server side (store). The Server process the customers and the
items are shipped to the address submitted by them. The application was
designed into two modules first Os for the customers who wish to buy the
articles. Second is for the storekeepers who maintains and updates the
information pertaining to the articles and those of the customers? The end
user of this product is a departmental store where the application is hosted on
the web and the administrator maintains the database. The application which
is deployed at the customer database, the details of the items are brought
forward from the database for the customer view based on the selection
through the menu and the database of all the products are updated at the end
of each transaction. Data entry into the application can be done through
various screens designed for various levels of users. Once the authorized
personnel feed the relevant data into the system, several reports could be
generated as per the security.
INTRODUCTION
2
This is a Project work undertaken in context of partial fulfillment of the MSc-IT.
E-Shopping is a phrase with broad meaning, which is not surprising because it
relates to almost all aspects of planning, building, and managing a Web site.
In a matter of very few years, the Internet has consolidated itself as a very
powerful platform that has changed the way we do business, and the way we
communicate. The Internet, as no other communication medium, has given an
International or, if you prefer, a "Globalized" dimension to the world. Internet
has become the Universal source of information for millions of people, at
home, at school, and at work.

transactions and privacy policy. Unlimited choices are made available to the
consumers by number of E-shops available online.
The main benefit of E-shopping is that the people don’t have to remain
constrained with the products available at their local shopping center. People
can surf virtual retail store or E-shop and can find lowest reasonable price.
As the internet spread all over the world, e-marketing acquired its own
importance among the marketers. The topic ‘E-shopping’ is as vast as to write a
blog about it. So here we are presenting a blog cum website for conferring all
the aspects of E-shopping.
The metaphor of an online catalog is also used, by analogy with mail order
catalogs. All types of stores have retail web sites, including those that do and
do not also have physical storefronts and paper catalogs. Online shopping is a
type of electronic commerce used for business-to-business (B2B) and business-
to-consumer (B2C) transactions. The term "Webshop" also refers to a place of
business where web development, web hosting and other types of web related
activities take place (Web refers to the World Wide Web and "shop" has a
4
colloquial meaning used to describe the place where one's occupation is
carried out).
PROBLEM DEFINITION
To develop a web-based application to improve the service to the customers
and merchant this in turn increases the sales and profit in “E-SHOPPING?"

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
“If you know where you are going, any road will take you there”
Before the start of any research, it is very necessary to define the objective of
the study i.e. what we are going to study.
To check the consumer awareness & perception of online shopping in
India.
Impact of advertising on online shopping.
To study sales promotional techniques to boast online shopping in India.
To find out influence of online advertising on the buying behaviour of
the customer.
Satisfaction level at various components of online shopping.
The system is capable of maintaining details of various customers, vendors,
Products and storing all the day to day transactions such as generation of
shipment address bills, handling customers and product receipts, updating of
stores.
The central concept of the application is to allow the customer to shop virtually
using the Internet and allow customers to buy the items and articles of their
desire from the store. The information pertaining to the products are stores on
an RDBMS at the server side (store). The Server process the customers and the
items are shipped to the address submitted by them.
The end user of this product is a departmental store where the application is
hosted on the web and the administrator maintains the database. The
application which is deployed at the customer database, the details of the
items are brought forward from the database for the customer view based on
the selection through the menu and the database of all the products are
updated at the end of each transaction.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
6
To achieve the objective of studying the Internet as a Marketing tool data has
been collected by the following methods.
MARKETING RESEARCH
Marketing research covers the field of problems, techniques, and other aspects
of marketing and related decision-making and their implementation. It studies
an economic unit in respect of its various constituents such as consumers,
buyers, and sellers. It studies their response pattern towards prize, promotion,
purchasing power, and loyalty towards specific brands and similar other
marketing activities. It also tries to determine the contribution of other
relevant factors such as habits, consumers, and preference to decision making.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
• A structured design questionnaire is used for surveying the consumers.
• Both open ended and close ended questions are included.
Data Sources
• Both Secondary and Primary Sources of data will be used.
• The major type of information used is primary data. This is done thru
primary survey. The literature review is a secondary data type. The
sources include books, periodicals, websites, printed literature etc.
SAMPLE SIZE
• A sample of 100 people will be taken for the survey. Business persons,
Professionals, Non-professional and Retired persons are included.
• Further these are only the people based on whom analysis and
interpretation is done.
SAMPLING METHOD
7
• Random sampling method will be chosen to conduct the survey in which
the samples are selected randomly.
Methodology:
The study will be conducted by Personal Interview with the customers
who have interest in shopping.
Observing & studying the behavior of the customers & their demand
towards the different products.
The study on the customer satisfaction level that can be obtained
through well formatted & designed questionnaire that is mentioned in
the subsequent chapter.
LIMITATIONS
And necessary data to complete the project may not gather in proper manner.
The limitations which I observe were as follows:
With respect to actual population the sample size was too small. This
might be effect the final result.
The time limit for the research was small to collect adequate information
for inference for the consumer buying behavior.
In the fast changing world the data collected soon become historic and
research findings based on them irrelevant.
Some customer’s problems don’t lead to valid research conclusion.

The lack of information sources for the analysis part.
DESIGN ARCHETECTURE
1. EXISTING SYSTEM
In the existing system the entire system is manual. That is the person will go to
the shop to get the commodity. This result is carrying heavy weights, causes
more physical strain. In this busy world it is not possible to spend time for the
shopping. It is time taking process. Even if we go to the market we may or may
not find the commodity required for us or the stock may not be there. There
are many things that are required from the starting of the day. We cannot get
the things at any time by going to the shop and the persons who want to get
medicines from the medical shops at any time is not possible. We cannot move
the heavy luggage of goods purchased. The delivery of goods from shop to
home is very difficult. If we are busy in doing another work, we cannot go to
the market to buy the goods.
3. PROPOSED SYSTEM
Shop online: Shop online is an online shopping application, which provides the
online shopping facility available for everyone. Any type of the product will be
available for the customer, and it can be easily purchased faster when compare
with ebay. Shop online application concentrates more on user friendly
interfaces and promotes users to purchase faster and easier. There is a facility
available to do online purchase. Shop online have registration facility. This will
9
enable the new user to sign in and use the product much effectively. The
registration process is faster and easier compared to any existing application.
In the User interface of Shop online there will be accomplished with options to
find new products available and most purchased and customer satisfied
products. Customer can avail this facility and buy the product faster. All
products in the website will be highlighted with the image of the product. By
click on the image it will take you directly to the buy page, from where
customer can purchase easily.
Shop online is provided with customer support page. Using this page any
customer can get the assistance from the available customer support executive
online. There we have Support over phone, email and chat. Customer can use
this facility any time.
As security issue pays major importance today, extra attention towards security
is done in Shop online application. We incorporate digital signature technique
to ensure much effective security for the customer. Digital signature will
provide the secure data transactions and also during money transaction for
purchase.
3. SYSTEM SPECIFICATION
The application ONLINE SHOPPING was designed into two modules
1. For the customers who wish to buy the articles?
2. For the storekeeper who maintains and updates the information pertaining
to the articles and those of the customers.
4. SYSTEM DESIGN
In order to design a web site, the relational database must be designed first.
Conceptual design can be divided into two parts:
1. Data model
2. Process model.
1. Data model
The data model focuses on what data should be stored in the database while
the process model deals with how the data is processed. To put this in the
context of the relational database, the data model is used to design the
relational tables.
2. Process model
10
The process model is used to design the queries that will access and perform
operations on those Tables. Design of software involves conceiving, planning
out and specifying the externally observable characteristics of the software
product. We have data design, architectural design and user interface design in
the design process. These are explained in the following section. The goal of
design process is to provide a blue print for implementation, testing and
maintenance activities.
5. DATA DESIGN:
The primary activity during data design is to select logical representations of
data objects identified during requirement analysis and software analysis. A
data dictionary explicitly represents the relationships among data objects and
constrains on the elements of the data structure. A data dictionary should be
established and used to define both data and program design.
6. FESIBILITY STUDY:
Feasibility study is conducted once the problem is clearly understood.
Feasibility study is a high level capsule version of the entire system analysis and
design process. The objective is to determine quickly at a minimum expense
how to solve a problem. The purpose of feasibility is not to solve the problem
but to determine if the problem is worth solving. The system has been tested
for feasibility in the following points
1. Technical Feasibility
2. Economical Feasibility
3. Operational Feasibility.
1. Technical Feasibility: -
The project entitles "Project Monitoring System" is technically feasibility
because of the below mentioned feature. The project was developed in Java
which Graphical User Interface It provides the high level of reliability,
availability and compatibility. All these make Java an appropriate language for
this project. Thus the existing software Java is a powerful language.
2. Economical Feasibility: -
The computerized system will help in automate the selection leading the
profits and details of the organization. With this software, the machine and
manpower utilization are expected to go up by 80-90% approximately. The
11
costs incurred of not creating the system are set to be great, because precious
time can be wanted by manually.
3. Operational Feasibility:
In this project, the management will know the details of each project where he
may be presented and the data will be maintained as decentralized and if any
inquires for that particular contract can be known as per their requirements
and necessaries.
7. IMPLEMENTATION:
Implementation is the stage where the theoretical design is turned into a
working system. The most crucial stage in achieving, a new successful system
and in giving confidence on the new system for the users that it will work
efficiently and effectively. The system can be implemented only after thorough
testing is done and if it is found to work according to the specification. It
involves careful planning, investigation of the current system and its
constraints on implementation, design of methods to achieve the change over
and an evaluation of change over methods a part from planning. Two major
tasks of preparing the implementation are education and training of the users
and testing of the system. The implementation phase comprises of several
activities. The required hardware and software acquisition is carried out. The
system may require some software to be developed.
CONCLUSION
12
online shopping influenced people from all over the world. However, this
concept of online shopping led to the possibilities of fraud and privacy
conflicts. Unfortunately, it has shown that it is possible for criminals to
manipulate the system and access personal information. Luckily, today with the
latest features of technology, measures are being taken in order to stop
hackers and criminals from inappropriately accessing private databases.
Through privacy and security policies, website designers are doing their best to
put an end to this unethical practice. By doing so, society will continue to
depend upon online shopping, which will allow it to remain a tremendous
success in the future.
The Internet has become a major resource in modern business, thus electronic
shopping has gained significance not only from the entrepreneur’s but also
from the customer’s point of view. For the entrepreneur, electronic shopping
generates new business opportunities and for the customer, it makes
comparative shopping possible. As per a survey, most consumers of online
stores are impulsive and usually make a decision to stay on a site within the
first few seconds. We have designed the project to provide the user with easy
navigation, retrieval of data and necessary feedback as much as possible. A
good shopping cart design must be accompanied with user-friendly shopping
cart application logic. It should be convenient for the customer to view the
contents of their cart and to be able to remove or add items to their cart. The
shopping cart application described in this project provides a number of
features that are designed to make the customer more comfortable.
Online shopping is a different experience and you can make the shopping
creative over the internet as you get used to it. There can be lot of
apprehensions about online shopping when you get in to it for the first time.
As you experience more and more of it those apprehensions get disappeared
slowly. Remember that if you stick to the basics, online shopping become more
enjoyable and easier than real-world shopping.
In the conclusion part of my project, all people whom I have surveyed were
interested in shopping but, most of the people were having preference to shop
offline and very few were interested to go online for shopping.
My survey indicates that the maximum consumer make the purchase offline
because of the lack of awareness towards online shopping and shopping
13
portals. On the basis of survey the major drawback of the online shopping is
lack of the security in the shopping payment through credit/Debit card. Most
of the people preferred online shopping because it is a time saving process.
WYSWYG (what you see is what you get)approach is not being followed whole
heartedly by online web portal as most of the people opined that the product
purchase through online portals differs significantly from its original form .The
images of the product are mostly inflated which affects the perception of
consumers towards online shopping.
