Course Title: AP Calculus AB Teacher Name: Tom Sankey
Contact: Email: Thomas_sankey@hcpss.org School Phone: 410-313-2880

Course Description:
The overall purpose of this course will be to teach the students the fundamental ideas of
derivative and integral Calculus with related applications. Opportunities to examine the
development of appropriate theory and its proof will be provided. Much emphasis will be
given to doing problems that enable mastery of the basic concepts. After successful
completion of this course, the student will be prepared to take the AB version of the AP
Calculus exam on Tuesday May 14, 2018.

Required Texts, Supplies & Learning Materials:

 Textbook (Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic by Finney, Demana, Waits, and Kennedy, 2007.)
 Spiral notebook or binder for this class only
(There will be many handouts with holes punched so a folder or binder is highly recommended)
 College-ruled paper
 Pencils
 Graphing calculator (we recommend a TI-84 or TI-84+)

Learning Objectives/Outcomes:
• Students should be able to work with functions represented in a variety of ways: graphical,
numerical, analytical or verbal. They should understand the connections among these
representations.
• Students should understand the meaning of the derivative in terms of a rate of change and
local linear approximation and should be able to use derivatives to solve a variety of
problems.
• Students should understand the meaning of the definite integral both as a limit of Riemann
sums and as the net accumulation of change and should be able to use integrals to solve a
variety of problems
• Students should understand the relationship between the derivative and the definite integral
as expressed in both parts of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
• Students should be able to communicate mathematics and explain solutions to problems
both verbally and in written sentences.
• Students should be able to model a written description of a physical situation with a
function, a differential equation or an integral.
• Students should be able to use technology to help solve problems, experiment, interpret
results and support conclusions.
• Students should be able to determine the reasonableness of solutions, including sign, size,
relative accuracy and units of measurement.
• Students should develop an appreciation of calculus as a coherent body of knowledge and
as a human accomplishment

Classroom Expectations:
As a member of this class you are expected to adhere to the Mt. Hebron H.S. Rules and
Procedures listed in your agenda books. Please pay special attention to the honor code in
the handbook. Most importantly, bring a positive attitude and be responsible for your own
learning!

Cell Phone Policy: Please turn off cell phones and place in backpacks before the beginning of the
period. Thank you.

Grading Policy:
Students will earn points by taking tests and quizzes, as well as by completing homework and
classwork assignments. Your grade will be based on the total number of points. A major test will be
given each unit. Additionally, quizzes (announced and unannounced) will be given throughout each
unit.

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily. If, at the end of the quarter, a student has
done ALL of the homework assignments, three percentage points to their to the overall grade will be
added. For every homework assignment missed, 1 percentage point will be subtracted.
# of H.W. missed Pts to be add/sub
0 2 percent added
1 1 percent added
2 0 percent added
3+ 1 percent subtracted for each

It is the student’s responsibility to make up all missed work when absent. Make-up work for a one day
excused absence is to be completed within 48 hours. Students with excused absences need to make
up any quiz or test as soon as possible. Grades will be posted online. Students and parents will have
access to track the student’s grade throughout the year.

89.5% to 100% of total possible points will earn an A

79.5% to 89.4% of total possible points will earn a B
69.5% to 79.4% of total possible points will earn a C
59.5% to 66.4% of total possible points will earn a D
< 59.4% of total possible points will earn an E
