Introduction
to TEDx
What is
The TEDx Program is designed to

help communities, organizations and

individuals to spark conversation and

?
connection through local TED-like

experiences.

At TEDx events, a screening of TED

Talks videos — or a combination of

TEDx was created in the spirit of
live presenters and TED Talks videos
TED's mission, "ideas worth
— sparks deep conversation and
spreading." It supports independent
connections at the local level. TEDx

TEDx UniversityofMacau is put together by a group

of passionate people in University of Macau

campus.

TEDx UniversityofMacau was established to

promote TEDx events in Macau. In the spirit of ideas

worth spreading and promoting its core values,TEDx

UniversityofMacau exists for all people living in the

community.

In 2016, TEDx UniversityofMacau organized TEDx

event for the first time and theme was 'Root'. In 2017

TEDx UniversityofMacau has fixed the theme 'Force'

for the upcoming event.

3

THEME : FORCE

In physics, a force is any interaction that will

change the motion of an object when there is an

opposition. A force can cause an object with mass

to change its velocity, so as its acceleration. In a

fast growing city Macau where we are surrounded

by different forces from different directions in

different magnitudes, under what circumstance

can forces be in synchronization?

In TEDxUniversityofMacau 2017, we hope that

this magnet can synchronize all the attracted

forces and create a resonance and beyond.

Chuan Sheng Liu

Professor/ Physicist

Prof. Liu Chuan Sheng is a renowned physicist and a leader in

higher education and controlled fusion research. He has made

groundbreaking contributions to the theory of laser-plasma

interaction, basic plasma physics and nuclear fusion.

He has served as Chairman of Plasma Physics Division of

American Physical Society and as Chairman of Plasma Science

Subcommittee and a member of the Committee on Physics and

Astronomy of National Research Council, USA. His research

interest has been in laser acceleration of changed particles,

particularly laser proton acceleration for cancer therapy.

Prof. Liu is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland’s

Department of Physics where he served as a professor for 40 years

and twice served as the Department Chair and Interim Vice

President for Research and Dean of Graduate School at the U. of

Maryland. He was President of the Central University in Taiwan.

He retired to be the founding Master of Chao Kuang Piu College at

the University of Macau.

7

Leonardo (Don) A.N. Dioko

Professor/ Economist
8

Leonardo (Don) A.N. Dioko

Professor/ Economist

Prof. Leonardo (Don) Dioko is at the Institute for Tourism Studies,

Macau (IFT) and is the Director of IFT’s Tourism Research Centre

(ITRC), which principally conducts policy research commissioned

by the Macau SAR Government.

The most significant of these studies is the Centre’s long-running

annual study on Macau's Tourism Carrying Capacity, which began

in 2003 and continues today to inform much of what we know

about how Macau’s residents and its millions of visitors think, feel,

and react to the tremendous change brought about by the almost

inscrutable and oft-misunderstood force of tourism.

Having arrived in Macau 25 years ago when visitors numbered only

6M/year, Don’s work and core research have allowed him and his

colleagues to systematically and continuously observe some of the

most important long-term socio-economic trends in Macau driven

by rapid tourism growth. His work has led Don to believe that

tourism growth can be a force for good as much as it can be a force

for harm.

13

Zihao (Michael) Li
Assistant Professor/ Dancer
14

Zihao (Michael) Li
Assistant Professor/ Dancer

When a dancer executes a pirouette (turn), the harder he pushes

(force), the faster he spins (velocity). Forces generated from the spine

axis helps him spin up and turn more.

Then comes balance. Static balance means net force is zero and he

might fall. Meanwhile, any move while balancing causes quick fall or

more turns. In life, when do we push and how do we balance? What

is the equation of force (action vs. inaction)? How do we deal with

expected opportunities and challenges? Dr. Li presents his embodied

equation on force and draws connections between dance and life.

Li has performed with world-class dance companies in China, Hong

Kong (HK), Canada, and Germany. He has taught dance at all levels

worldwide and he contributes to an array of conferences/publications.

He won multiple awards including the Silver Award at the

International E-Learning Competition in 2016. Li is an Assistant

Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Macau

(UM) and directs the UM Dance Troupe.
