PROPOSAL THESIS

CHAPTER I

I. Title: The correlation between vocabulary mastery, grammar mastery

toward reading ability at the first semester English Education

Department of IAIN Ponorogo in academic year 2017/2018.

Keywords: vocabulary mastery, grammar mastery and reading ability.

II. Background of study :

Language is important tool for communication. According to oxford

advanced learner’s dictionary of current English, language is the system of

communication in speech and writing that is used by people in particular country.

Other definition about language is the use of humans system of sound and words

to communicate. From those definitions, it means that the use of language is very

crucial to establish communication between people. Language has both

transactional and interactional function, language is used not only as a means for

communication but also as relationship to build relationship with other people.

Nowadays, the expansion of communication, information and technologies

leads people to join the global era where there are many necessity of high

qualification and skills related to the ability to comprehend international language

especially English. English is the global language which is used by all people all

over the world. English plays an important role in human life. Since it is
considered as international language, learning English has becomes a necessity for

everyone who wants to engage in international interaction. Therefore, it is very

important for people to learn not only for communicate but also for learning. In

Indonesia, English language learning becomes a primer program which is given in

all grade of school institution coming from elementary school until university.

Generally, English has four skills which must be achieved by language

learner. Those are listening, speaking, reading and writing. In common, they are

identified as receptive skills and productive skills. Receptive skills concern with

the ability to encode others messages; reading and listening and productive skills

deal with the ability to decode messages to others; speaking and writing. All of

those skills are supported by other component such as vocabulary, grammar,

pronunciation and et cetera. To achieve good English achievement, the learner

must comprehend each skill of English besides the other components existed. One

of importance skills in English language learning is reading. Reading is essentially

one skill which should be mastered by student in nearly all level of school. Since

that in every activity in classrooms needs read. Moreover, the importance of

reading can be seen from the fact that the main part of national examination in

junior high school and senior high school was to do reading skill. Generally, the

concept of reading is ways to search some information relate to the text and take

them to be new knowledge in our mind. The purpose of reading are to search for

simple information, for skimming quickly, learning from texts, integrating

information, writing, critique text and general comprehension (William, 2007: 7).
Actually, reading is getting information from the text involves contents,

meanings and particular information. Reader cannot get and comprehend the

information of text if they do not know some aspects of reading. There are some

aspects which must be achieved by the reader. Grammar and vocabulary are

involved as aspects for comprehending text. Nowadays, some problem are

students difficult to understand the text is given by teacher because of some

factors such as their vocabulary building is still low and they difficult to get the

meaning because they do not master grammar knowledge. Whereas both of them

are the crucial factors influence to the success reader to face reading.

Mastering vocabulary is important in reading. It is important to make

students are easy to understand each word in the text. Student will be fluent to

read and can get more information about the text if they can master vocabulary.

Besides student can answer the question relate to the text if they know the

meaning of each word is given in the text.

Grammar also takes as an important aspect which is used to comprehend

English text. In some cases, students are difficult to interpret the meaning of the

sentence because they do not master grammar. Many studies presented the

importance of grammar to support students’ reading comprehension. There is

relatively little discussion among reading researchers and teachers that identifies

the need for readers to use information from grammar to build comprehension

(cf. Fender, 2001; Grabe,2005). Eventually, the grammar knowledge should be

know for L2 learner who want to comprehend text


In English language learning particularly in reading, vocabulary and

grammar be importance aspect of reading. Both of them are the aspect which

influence to the success student to face reading. Student will be more helpful in

reading if they collaborate between their vocabulary mastery and grammar

mastery. The researcher said

In English Education faculty of IAIN Ponorogo during lecturing in the

classroom, the lecturers teach the students using English language. They require

the students to communicate with the lecturers or the other students using English

in order to increase their speaking skill. The teacher also gives student many

English literatures. All literatures given are using English language. Students have

to read those literatures in order to increase their reading ability and reading

comprehension about English language literature. Therefore, reading become one

of the important language skill should be mastered by students of English

Education Department of IAIN Ponorogo. In the fact, many students of English

faculty of IAIN Ponorogo especially second semester are still difficult to

comprehend text because their vocabulary mastery and grammar mastery is still

low.

III. Research problem

1. Is there any correlation between vocabulary mastery, grammar

mastery toward reading comprehension at the first semester

English Education Department of IAIN Ponorogo in academic year

2017/2018.
IV. Objective of study

The objectives of study in this research are:

1. To know correlation between vocabulary mastery with reading

comprehension at the first semester English Education

Department of IAIN Ponorogo in academic year 2017/2018?

2. To know the correlation between grammar mastery with

reading comprehension at the first semester English

Education Department of IAIN Ponorogo in academic year

2017/2018?

3. To know the correlation between vocabulary achievement,

grammar mastery toward reading ahievement at the first

semester English Education Department of IAIN Ponorogo in

academic year 2017/2018?

V. Significance of study

The significance of this study can be viewed from both theoretical and

practical aspects, as describes below:

1. Theoretical significance:

After conducting the research, this study is expected can

give contribution of knowledge about important of grammar

mastery and vocabulary mastery in student speaking skills.


2. Practical significance:

a. Student

Students will know the importance of vocabulary

mastery and grammar mastery in achieving reading

comprehension, so they know those aspect. And by

knowing the result, they will be improve their vocabulary

mastery, grammar mastery in order to increase their

speaking ability.

b. Teacher

For teachers, the result of the research can give an

input to consider language aspect such as vocabulary

mastery and grammar mastery as the elements to increase

students speaking skills.

c. Reader

For the readers this study is expected to give a

contribution for further study to do scientific researches

concerning with students' vocabulary mastery, grammar

mastery and students’ reading skills.

VI. Organization of the Thesis

The report organization of this study as follows:


Chapter one is about introduction. This chapter explains about

background of the study, limitation of the problem, statement of the problem,

objectives of the study, and the Significances of the study.

Chapter two is about review of related literature. This chapter explain

about theoretical background, previous research finding (the synthesis of

other research that inspiring this research), theoretical framework, and

hypothesis.

Chapter three is about research methodology. In this chapter give the

explanation about technique that is to make research. It is consists of the

method of the research, population, sample, and respondent, the instrument of

data collection, technique of data collection, and technique of data analysis.

Chapter four is about research result. In this chapter give explanation

about the research location, data description, data analysis, and discussion.

Chapter five is about conclusion. There is explained about conclusions

of this study and the suggestion for the next researcher or the reader.

Grammar is the important aspect in English language

learning. Without grammar mastery, student will difficult to

of grammar. According Richard, Platt, and Weber in David Nunan

“grammar is a description of the structure of a language and the

way in which units such as words and phrases are combined to

produce sentences in the language.”
