Autoignition temperature of a substance is the lowest temperature at which the substance will spontaneously combust in a normal atmosphere,
without an external source of ignition (such as a flame or spark).
Flash point is the temperature at which a liquid or solid gives off vapors that can form as a flammable mixture with air.
Flammable limits apply generally to vapors and are defined as the concentration range in which a flammable substance can produce a flame or
explosion when an ignition source (such as a flame or spark) is present. The concentration is generally expressed as a percent
fuel by volume. Above the upper flammable limit the mixture of substance is to rich in fuel to burn. Below the lower flammable
limits the mixture lacks sufficient fuel to burn.
Vapor density is defined as the relative weight of a gas or vapor compared to air, which has an arbitrary value of one. If a gas or vapor has a vapor
density of less than one it will generally rise in the air. If the vapor density is greater than one, it will generally sink in air.

1 If equipment is isolated be sealing all conduit 1/2" or larger, in accordance with Section 501.5(A) of NFPA 70, National
Electric Code , equipment for
the group classification shown is permitted.
2 For classification of areas involving Ammonia, see Safety Code for Mechanical Refregeration , ANSI/ASHRAE 15, and
Safety Requirements for the
Storage and Handling of Anhydrous Ammonia , ANSI/CGA G2.1.
3 Certain chemicals may have characteristics that requires safeguards beyond those required for any of the above groups.
Carbon disulfide is one of
those chemicals because of its low autoignition temperature and the small joint clearance to arrest flame propagation.
4 Petroleum Naptha is a saturated hydrocarbon mixture whose boiling point is 20° to 135° C. It is also known as benzine,
ligroin, petroleum ether and naptha.
