QUESTION: If you a r e desirous of receiving the

baptism in the Holy Spirit and somehow you do
not, what a r e some things that could be keeping
you from i t ?

(In a seminar on the Holy Spirit, the above question was asked
during a question and answer session. Several inquiries of the
same nature have recently been received in our office. The
answer given by Brother Nagin during that session will help
those of you now desiring to receive the baptism in the Holy
Spirit as well as those of you desiring to help others, and we
sense the Holy Spirit's leading to print that answer at this time.)

ANSWER: Actually, if you have been r e a l l y born-

again and a r e walking in fellowship with God
(of course, if you are out of fellowship you will
have to get back in) there a r e only two things
that can keep you from receiving; either (1) a
lack of faith, o r (2) a lack of yieldedness.
And this is how you can tell which it i s . If
it is a lack of faith, you will not sense or feel
the Spirit of God move upon you and in you.
This is because it is your faith that receives
the gift—that activates the moving of the Holy
Spirit upon you.

 In 1 9 5 0 , J e s u s appeared to me
in a vision and told me to lay
hands on people to r e c e i v e the
Holy Ghost. He said, "You quote
to them Acts 19:6 which says,
'And when Paul had laid his
hands upon them, the Holy Ghost
came on them....' Then tell the
candidates who come to r e c e i v e
the Holy Ghost that I told you to
tell them that when you put your
hands on them, the Holy Ghost
will come upon them. And that
they a r e to perform the act of
receiving Him."
Jesus went on to tell me,
"Tell the candidates then that I
told you to tell them that their
tongues, or lips, will seem to
want to say something that isn't
English. Tell them then to lift
their voices and speak out what­
ever supernatural syllable or
word seems easy to speak."
A LACK OF FAITH
Now if a person believes he
r e c e i v e s , he will say, "I r e c e i v e
Him. I r e c e i v e the Gift." (It
must be said in faith, of course.
If you just say it out of your
head, nothing will happen.) When
you do say that in faith, the
Spirit will immediately begin
to move on you and in you. And
He will move upon your vocal
organs.
If a lack of faith is involved,
you will not sense this moving.
So I often stop and ask, "Did
you sense the Spirit of God
move upon you? Did your tongue
seem to want to say something
that wasn't English?" (Or, as it
was in my own case, I ask if
there w e r e words down inside
which seemed to sort of boil up.)
If their answer is no, then it is
a lack of faith.
And since "faith comes by
hearing and hearing by the word
of God" (Rom. 10:17), I say to
them, "Go back over the S c r i p ­
tures again carefully. In the
Acts of the Apostles see how
they received. Read what it says
about the 'laying on of hands.'
Build your faith. School yourself
into faith."
Concerning the woman with

the issue of blood who touched
J e s u s ' clothes, Mark 5:28 s a y s ,
"For she said, If I may touch but
his clothes, I shall be whole."
The Greek says here, "For she
kept saying."
And so I often say to folks who
are hard chronic cases, as we
call them, having been seeking
many y e a r s , "Read what the
Word says about the laying on of
hands to r e c e i v e the Holy Spirit.
Then for the next 24 hours keep
saying, 'The next time I go and
he lays his hands on me, I will
receive the Holy Ghost and
speak with other tongues.' Not
one has failed to r e c e i v e . Those
who have struggled for y e a r s
have come and when hands were
laid on them they have instantly
received and spoken with other
tongues. You can school your­
self into faith.
A LACK OF YIELDING
Now, secondly, if the Holy Spirit
does come and you sense His
moving, you must cooperate
with Him.
At times, when I have asked
someone, "Did it seem as if
your tongue wanted to say some­
thing which wasn't English?" he
has replied, "It was all I could
do to keep it from it."
You're not supposed to keep it
from it! You are supposed to
speak.
Many people get into the natu­
r a l entirely. They a r e expecting
something to suddenly come
down on them and grab them and
make them do something they
wouldn't want to do. Many seem
to be waiting for God to grab
them and pour something down
them. It appears that some
think that when God gets ready
it will be as though He turns a
little radio on inside you and it
will start talking. But it doesn't
work that way.
The Scripture says, "Andthey
were all filled with the Holy
Ghost, and began to speak with
other tongues.. ." (Acts 2:4).

tongues. We make a mistake in n (

When folks get down and seek w

receive the Holy Ghost by luck. jj

We need light and the Word of ^
God enlightens. "The entrance $
of thy words giveth light" (Ps. ^
119:130). "Thy word is a lamp e
unto my feet, and a light unto c
my path" (Ps. 119:105). E
We can help people be able to r
respond o r yield to the Spirit. s
We held a meeting in Texas a j,
few y e a r s ago and a lady in the ^
congregation wrote her friend ^
who lived some distance away, ^
"Come down and get the Holy ^
Ghost! Everybody down here is
receiving the Holy Spirit." And j,
so, her friend, a school teacher, ^
left Friday after classes and r
drove down for the weekend. ^
In the Friday night service as I x
laid hands on her I knew the Holy v
Spirit came on her. The Lord £
had told me in the vision how I «
could tell and I knew that He had j
come. But she did not perform
the act of receiving and yielding }
to Him. On Saturday night I laid j
hands on her again and she didn't j
receive.
Then on Sunday morning after }
I had preached I turned the s e r - ^
vice over to the pastor. This ^
lady stood up and addressed the
pastor, "Brother, I have come ]
all this way after my friend j
wrote that everyone was r e c e i v ­
ing. (Everyone who had come ,
except her had received. How- ^
ever she had not been in the two
weeks of teaching services.) I ,
have to start back to be there
for school in the morning and I
wonder if Brother Hagin would
lay hands on me again this
morning and pray." Desperation
was written on her face and you ]
could see that she was hungry (
for God. So I laid hands on her
again and again I knew the Spirit
came upon her, but still she did
 not receive. It was getting late
so I finally turned the s e r v i c e
back again to the pastor and I
walked off the platform and out
the side door Ae I was walking
through the parking lot I noticed
that she and her friend had left
the service too and were sitting
in their c a r . I felt so s o r r y for
her and I quickly said to the Lord
in my spirit, (And here is some­
thing you need to do—depend on
the Holy Spirit to help you in
helping others. He can show you
exactly what to do.) "Lord, how
can I help her ?" Just like a flash
He showed me. It came as a
revelation on the inside. In my
spirit I knew what it was that
hindered her—she thought that
the Holy Ghost was going to do
the speaking in tongues. I knew
the Scripture that would help
her and what I needed to do.
I walked up to the car and
handed her my Bible opened to
Acts 2:4, "Sister, would you
mind reading that v e r s e aloud
please," I requested. So she
read, "And they were all filled
with the Holy Ghost, and began to
speak with other tongues, as the
Spirit gave them utterance." She
looked up at me questioningly.
I said, "Read it again." She
read it again. And again she
I looked at me as if to say, "What
now?"
I smiled and said, "Read it
aloud again." She read it again
for the third time and again the
third time she looked at me with
a question mark on her face.
I saw that she still hadn't gotten
it and so I said, "Read it again."
I intended for her to read it
until she got it. And the fourth
time she started reading aloud,
; "And they were all filled with
the Holy Ghost and they...Ah!
.. Ah!. .Ah!" she exclaimed.
"Why it says 'they' spoke!
I always thought the Holy Ghost
spoke with other tongues! If I
had been called to witness in
court I would have said the Holy
Ghost spoke through them in
tongues."
Then I said t o n e r , "TheBible
' says that in the mouth of two or
three witnesses, shall e v e r y
word be established. You can't
just take one Scripture and build
anything on it. That is a mistake.
You must take the whole body of
Scripture on a subject. Let's
get two or three witnesses. Then
we will be on safe and solid
ground."
So I had her read Acts 1 0 : 4 4 -
46. And she read, "While Peter
yet spake these words, the Holy
Ghost fell on all them which
heard the word. And they of the
circumcision which believed
were astonished, as many as
came with Peter, because that
on the Gentiles also was poured
out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For they heard them speak with
tongues, and magnify God...."
For the third witness we read
Acts 1 9 : 6 , "And when Paul had
laid his hands upon them, the
Holy Ghost came on them; and
they spake with tongues, and
prophesied."
Then I asked her, "When I
laid hands on you a while ago,
did you sense the presence of
the Holy Ghost?"
"Yes, I certainly did."
"Sister, I perceive that the
same anointing to speak is still
there. You can speak right now,
if you will. Just open your
mouth and talk."
Without waiting or stumbling
that dear lady opened her mouth
and began to speak a most
fluent and beautiful language in
tongues. And she could have
been doing it all that time
We do have to tell folks what
to expect. This lady hadn't
known what to expect. But the
Word enlightened her and she
realized that "they" must co­
operate. Speaking with other
tongues is a cooperation b e ­
tween you and the Holy Ghost.
It isn't all the Holy Ghost and it
isn't all you—it is both of you.
You may run into someone
who will say, "I want to be c a r e ­
ful . I don't want it just to be me."
One young man said, "I know
you laid hands on me and I
sensed the Spirit of God come
upon me and I spoke something
I had never spoken before, but
I'm afraid that was just me
doing it."
"Doing what?"»I asked.
"Talking with tongues."
"It must have been you. It
wasn't me."
"Yes," he said, "but I wanted
it to be the Holy Ghost."
"Oh, you wanted the Holy
Ghost to receive the Holy
Ghost."
"No, I wanted the Holy Ghost
to talk in tongues."
"He doesn't talk in tongues,"
I replied. "You receive Him.
He gives you utterance. You talk
with tongues."
The Bible says that they began
to speak as the Spirit gave them
utterance. He gives the utter­
ance, you do the talking. Now
isn't that a cooperation between
you and the Holy Ghost?
People will say, "I don't want
it to be in the flesh." Well, we
live in this body of flesh and we
can't get the Holy Ghost any
other way except in the flesh.
Peter on the Day of Pentecost
repeated J o e l ' s prophecy say­
ing, "And it shall come to pass
in the last days, saith God, I
will pour out of my Spirit upon
all flesh...." (Acts 2:17). It is
men in the flesh, worshiping God
in the Spirit.
And I have had people say,
"Brother Hagin, if you ever see
me shout, it'll be the Lord."
"Do you mean if you ever
shout it will be the Lord shout­
ing?"
"Oh no! I don't mean it will be
God shouting, but I mean it will
be God making me do it!"
"You will never shout then,"
I say "He's never made anyone
shout yet."
Nor has He made them do
anything else. You have to yield
to Him. If God made people do
things, He would make everyone
be saved. But He doesn't. The
Word of God is preached and
the Holy Ghost deals with peo­
ple. They have that pull, that
urge, that prompting of the Spi­
rit to respond to Christ. Yet

Seven Steps to
Answered Prayer
(Part II)
Proverbs 4:20-22
Philippians 4:6
L a s t week's lesson covered four steps
to be taken in order to see our prayers
answered:
1. Decide what you want from God.
a. Be definite in laying your petitions
before Him.
2. Read scriptures that promise the answer
you need.
a. Search the Bible for scriptures that
apply to your particular need.
b. W i t h God's W o r d firmly implanted
in your heart, you can be prepared
against Satan's attacks.
3. Ask God for the things you want.
a. Even though He knows what we have
need of, it is His divine plan that we
make known to Him our wants.
4. Believe that you receive.
a. A stubborn faith that refuses to look
at circumstances produces results.
In this lesson we will deal with three
more steps which w e can take to pray
more effectively.
Step 5: Refuse to Doubt
Let every thought and desire affirm
that you have what you ask. Never per­
mit a mental picture of failure to remain
in y o u r mind. Never doubt for one
minute that you have the answer. If
doubts persist, rebuke them. G e t your
mind on the answer. James 4:7 says,
"Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you." Doubt is of the devil. Resist it.
Eradicate every image, suggestion, feel­
ing or thought which does not contribute
to your faith that you shall have what
you ask. Enjoy those things that do con­
tribute to your faith.
W h e n my daughter was three years old
a growth appeared in the corner of her
left eye. It kept growing larger and larger
until it was the size of the end of her

little finger. It was a cause for concern.
I knew in my spirit that it was going to
g o away. Friends told us, " O h , it will
probably just go away as she gets older."
I knew that when G o d healed her they
would just say that it would have gone
away anyway, so I took her to an eye
specialist for an examination. He said
that she had a type of growth that would
never go away without surgery. He sug­
gested that she be operated on soon, as
the growth would become larger and
larger until eventually it would hang
down over her face. I thanked him for
his diagnosis and left.
That night about 10:15 I prayed about
it and said, "Lord, the doctor said an
operation is necessary, but your Word
says that 'whatsoever you ask the Father
He will give it you.' I am standing on
that scripture. I have asked you and now
I believe that you have done it. I believe
tonight at 1 0 : 1 5 for my baby's healing.
I thank you for the healing."
I got up off my knees and as I started
to go to bed the devil told me to turn
the light on and see if the growth was
gone. But immediately.I eradicated that
suggestion. Several times during the
night I was awakened and the suggestion
would come to me to go see if the growth
was gone yet. I just said, "Satan, why
should I get up and turn the light on to
see if it's gone yet? I know it's gone
because I have God's W o r d for it."
W h e n I got up the next morning the
same suggestion returned, and again I
pushed it from my mind. I kept saying
that I had received the healing last night
at 1 0 : 1 5 . W h e n I saw my daughter at
breakfast that morning, the growth was
still on her eye. But the Bible tells us to
walk by faith and not by sight, so I
ignored the physical evidence of the
growth. I walked by faith and kept
thanking G o d for her healing.
Every time our family gathered at the
dinner table, I saw that ugly growth
sticking right out at me. I just kept
thanking G o d for the healing which took
place that night at 1 0 : 1 5 . I was so en­
grossed in thanking G o d for the healing
that I really don't know when it left. Not
long after that we were driving along in
the car and my daughter was standing
up on the front seat between my wife
and me. I turned to say something to
my wife and happened to notice that the
g r o w t h was gone. I mentioned this to
my wife and she said that it had been
gone for about ten days. W e had seen a
miracle as a result of believing God and
thanking Him for the answer while our
physical senses told us it had not hap­
pened. This is the realm in which the
battle of prayer is fought and won.
Our thoughts are governed by observa­
tion, association and teachings. W e must
guard against every evil thought and
every doubt that comes into the mind.
We must stay away from all places and
things that do not support the affirma­
tion that God has answered prayer. Some­
times this means staying away from
churches that teach more doubt than
faith. "Finally, brethren, whatsoever
things are true, whatsoever things are
honest, whatsoever things are just, what­
soever things are pure, whatsoever things
are lovely, whatsoever things are of good
report; if there be any virtue, and if there
be any praise, think on these things"
(Phil. 4:8).
According to Mark 9:23 a l l things
a r e possible to a believing one a n d
I a m a believing one.
Step 6: Meditate on the Promises
PROVERBS 4:20-22
20 My son, attend to my words; incline
thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes;
keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find
them, and health to all their flesh.
Meditate constantly on the promises
upon which you based the answer to your
prayer. See yourself in possession of what
you have asked God for, and make plans
accordingly as if it were already a reality.
God will make His Word good unto you
if you will act upon it.
If God's Word says that He hears and
answers prayer, and if that Word doesn't
depart from before your eyes, then you
are sure to see yourself with the things
you asked for. If you don't see yourself
with them, then God's W o r d has de­
parted from before your eyes. If you don't
stand by the W o r d , then even though
God wants to stand by you He cannot.
The only way G o d works is through His
Word. He moves in line with His Word.
He has magnified His Word above His
name. If you stand by the W o r d , God
will stand by you.
Many people pray and pray, but they
don't pray by the Word. J o h n 15:7 says,
"If ye abide in me, and my words abide
in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it
shall be done unto you." Jesus didn't just
say, "If ye abide in me," He also said,
"and my w a r d s abide in you." W i t h His
words abiding in us, we have ground to
stand upon.
O n e time I went to pray for an elderly
lady evangelist in Fort W o r t h , Texas.
Many people had been saved and filled
with the Spirit under her ministry. Now,
at the age of eighty-two, she had been
operated on and found to have seven
cancers in her body. The doctors just
sewed her back up and told her she didn't
have long to live.
M o n t h s had come and gone and,
though bedfast, she was still alive. W h e n
I talked to her she said that she was old
enough to die, but we told her to let God
heal her first, that if she lived she could
still win many more souls to God. Then
we read to her Proverbs 4 : 2 0 - 2 2 , the
scriptures quoted above, and told her to
visualize herself well and preaching.
I saw this woman eight months later
and she was out holding evangelistic
meetings. She came up to me in one of
my services, threw her arms around me
and hugged me. It startled me, and then
she realized that I didn't recognize her.
She looked so different as she had gained
weight and appeared in excellent health.
She told me that she was so glad that we
hadn't let her die. She had done just what
w e had told her to do. She had begun
to picture herself well and now she was
out working for God again. She had
scheduled evangelistic meetings for the
entire summer.
I later heard that this woman lived to
be ninety-one years old. She didn't die
of cancer, but had many more fruitful
years for the Master. Before her healing
she had visualized herself dead. But we
got her to see herself with what God had
provided for her. W e have to see our­
selves with what we have asked for.
Step 7: Give God the Praise
PHILIPPIANS 4:6
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every
thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made
known unto God.
The words "be careful for nothing" mean
"in nothing be anxious." It means, "Do
not fret or have any anxiety about any­
thing." As long as we fret and are anx­
ious, praying and fasting won't do any
good. This verse says "with thanks­
giving," and this comes after praying
about the matter. W e thank God for the
answer after we have prayed for it. There­
fore, the final step to answered prayer is
to lift your heart to G o d constantly in
gratitude and increasing praise for what
He has done and for what He is doing
for you now.
Make every prayer concerning what
you have asked for a statement of faith
and praise instead of unbelief. You can
say that you do have faith as easily as you
can think thoughts of doubt and unbelief.
It is thinking faith thoughts and speaking
faith words that leads the heart out of
defeat and into victory. D o not accept
defeat. Do not be denied. It is your
family right, your redemption right, to
have what God has promised. It is yours
and it will come, so accept it and it will
become a reality.
Andrew Murray said, "It is not good
taste to ask God for the same thing over
and o v e r again. If, when you do pray
again, what you've prayed for hasn't
materialized, don't pray for it again in
the same way because that would be un­
belief. Remind God that you asked for
it and what His Word says, and tell Him
that you are expecting it. Then thank
Him for it." Many times people undo
their prayers. They get into unbelief and
stay there as if they are spinning their
wheels.
During a convention in Texas I heard
Raymond T. Richey lead in prayer for a
man who was in the hospital dying. After
we prayed, we thanked God that He had
heard us. Brother Richey started to walk
away from the pulpit, but then turned
around and went back to the microphone.
He asked how many in the congregation
were going to keep praying for this man
in the hospital. Nearly everyone raised
his hand." W h a t do you want to do that
f o r ? ' he asked. " W e have already prayed
for him. Now let us keep praising God
because He has healed that man."
A t the close of the service someone
came in and announced that the man who
had been dying had suddenly revived and
was going to be all right. He had seen
Jesus walk into his room and He had
said, "I am the Lord that healeth thee."
Although unconscious, the man woke up
and immediately was well. This had hap­
pened while we had been praying.
The Christian man or woman who will
practice these seven steps to answered
prayer will discover great victory in his
prayer life. ^

reject.
Demons and evil spirits drive
and make people do things they
don't want to. The Holy Spirit
prompts, He urges, He leads,
He gives a gentle push, but you
have to go with it. If you don't
cooperate, He will leave.
A young man was pointed out
to me in a city-wide meeting as
being the music director of the
largest Assembly of God Church
in the city. I was told that even
though he had a degree in C h r i s ­
tian Education, for o v e r 20
years he had sought but had
never received the Baptism in
the Holy Spirit. After much p e r ­
suasion from his wife, he came
forward at the invitation but
all over his face was written,
"I'm not going to r e c e i v e any­
thing. I'm just coming to please
her."
Someone (a minister) had also
said, "That fellow is a choir
director at F i r s t Assembly.
There must be some secret sin
in his life o r he would have
received."
Have you heard people talk
like that? They do—and it is
unjust. The devil is the accuser
of the brethren. He s a y s to
folks, "There must be some­
thing wrong with you o r you
would have had it by now."
If you accuse the brethren then
you a r e joining with the devil.
The minute I laid hands on
him I knew by inward revelation
and said to him, "There is no
secret sin in your life. You
can receive the Holy Ghost as
you a r e . "
"Do you mean that? I've been
seeking an awfully long time.
I had about decided there must
be something t e r r i b l y wrong
with me."
I assured him there was no­
thing wrong with him and to
boost his faith I said, "I will
not have prayed for you over

be filled with the Holy Spirit.
