August 24 session

 energy is not created or destroyed. Energy is just there

 energy already pre exists long before humans came
 after the big bang, energy then came into existence
 goldilocks conditions – its why living in a planet is possible, or the perfect set of combinations
which give result to more complexities. Like the perfect distance earth is from the sun for life to
prosper
 complexity
 collective learning – humans are evolving into a single global brain. No person really has this
single global brain, and this is the scary part!
 Germany Team
o Germany has good energy history kasi you will see the underlying philosophy of energy
development. They don’t do the bandwagon style in getting energy
o the energy development was initiated or clamored by the people themselves, with little
initiatve from the govt, the latter just incentivizing Germany citizens to start this energy
development
 when it comes to reporting: maam does not like it when you do a traditional reporting like mag
start ka with important dates, persons, etc. So what you need to do is to use “big history” style
in your reporting
 when you study energy development of a country, like the PH: THIS IS FOR REPORTING!
o have a global perspective!
 first look at geography, or where the country is located (like if nasa ring of fire
ba siya, sa arctic, etc.) – kasi we would know the type of resources the country
has!
 also present the economic profile of the counry! like if 1st world ba siya,
development country, etc. And also where it got this profile and why!
 what is the energy mix of the country? Maam said to research what energy mix
is
 know the population of the country, kasi sila ang consumers/users ng energy!
 What is the profile of the country TODAY! and its future, if kaya.
 also know the treaties or international commitments the country
entered into
 Find the X-Factor or factors that impact the country’s energy development!
o 15 -20 mins per group! BE AS CREATIVE!!! Like role-playing, etc. Have fun!!! Make
learning fun, and make the report stick to their brains!!
o September 7 start of reporting!!!

September 1 SESSION

 what are the 2 main sources of energy?

o renewable and non-renewable
 oil is a fossil fuel. Fossil fuels are non-renewable
 acronyms to be used in quizzes
o BAU – business as usual
o MTOE – million tons of oil equivalent
 previously it was MBOE (million barrels of oil equivalent)
 oil daw is the main factor that “runs the world”
 is the PH a net exporter or net importer of oil?
o we are an IMPORTER! we don’t produce enough for our own means
o where do we import? primarily sa middle east!
 before for coals, we get it from Indonesia but nag higpit sila
 Australia din for coals, and also sa china
 for natural gas
o off the coast of palawan, there is a huge natural gas reservoir, which is the malampaya
gas fields. Feeds now 5 power plants in Luzon (ganun ka laki ang laman ng reservoir na
yun). natural gas is not equal to renewable energy, nor is it a clean gas! its petroleum
based. But its still cleaner than oil!
o natural gas is extracted! its extracted from the crevices of reservoirs. Gas extraction is
really a more difficult exercise!
o “fracking” (to get the gas) is more dangerous than the drilling for oil. Fracking is 2.0 of
petroleum resource exploration
 we are NOT importers of natural gas! we have our own resource for this!
 malampaya gas is RUNNING OUT! and currently we haven’t found any other substitute for this!
its not quick to find this natural gas
o if ever malampaya runs out of gas, then we must be ready to import!
o to transport gas, we first transform it to LIQUID STATE! (again goldilocks conditions para
ma freeze siya)
 if the gas from malampaya runs out, then the plants being powered by gasses will shut down,
and will lead to power outtages or blackouts
 upstream and downstream
o upstream is the extraction of the resource from the source
 like oil and gas exploration
 hahanap ng reserves, sources, etc
 and once ma hanap, they sell it
o downstream is the CONVERSION PART of energy
 coal is a fossil fuel. We have very little resource for coal
o similara island – is a coal extraction island. Residences of this island are coal extractors
and their families. Its near Siquijor island. Pero small or little lang ang coal sa island na
ito
o we therefore import heavily sa coal. Again sa Indonesia tayo nag import ng coal, pero
nga nag higpit sila, so we import from other countries
 coal plants need to be close/near to water! a huge body of water! why?
o to cool off the coal! kelangan may constant cooling mechanism yung powerplant
o another reason is the shipment! the coal shipment!
 vessels transporting coal are HUGE! some are called PANAMAX vessels
 the business as usual scenario for coal is going UP!
 power generation mix – shows all the power we consume (the oil, electricity, gas, etc, that we
consume)
o as seen in maam’s ppt, 40% of our power comes from coal
 the PH is SECOND in the world in producing geothermal resources!! why? kasi we are in the rain
of fire! because of the volcanoes!
 biomass –
o examples are methane!
 Transformers (using the roadmap of maam sa generation suppliers, transmissions, distribution,
consumers)
o step up for the powerplant, and stepdown to the voltage we use (wtf does this mean)
 main sources of power of the PH
o oil and diesel
o coal
o renewable
o natural gas
 for the Germany group:
o idk lol
 terms that we need to understand
o baseload – it’s the constant requirement or 24/7 requirement of energy consumption
 traditionally it’s a cheap power requirement. These comprise mainly of coal,
geothermal, and biomass
o intermediate (next category to baseload) (or mid merit)
 these are the diesel and natural gas plants (geothermal pwede din)
o peaking
 usually is the most expenseive value of power or electricity, kasi nga its not
always needed
 hydro – best source of peaking.
 solar
