Chapter III

Methodology
This chapter present the research design, population & locals of the study, data gathering

instruments, data collection procedures, and treatment of data.

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive-quantitative method to find out the effects of

extracurricular activities to the academic performance of GRADE 12 GHT PM class of

PHINMA UPang College Urdaneta. Descriptive research involves gathering data that describes

the data collection. It often uses visual aids such as graphs and charts to the aid the reader in

understanding the data distribution. Because the human mind cannot extract full import of a large

mass of raw data, descriptive statistics are very important in reducing the data to manageable

form. When in-depth, narrative descriptions of small number of cases involved, the research uses

description as a tool to organize data into patterns that emerge during analysis.

Descriptive-Quantitative method aimed at finding out “what is,” so observational and

survey methods are frequently used to collective data. Three main purpose of research are to

describe, explain, and validate finding that the researchers gathered. Descriptive emerges

following creative exploration, and serves to organize the findings in order to fit them with

explanation, and then test or validate those explanations. It utilize data collection and analysis

techniques that yield reports concerning the measures of central tendency. Variation, and

correlation. The combination of descriptive research characteristics summary and correlational

statistics, along with its focus on specific types of questions, methods, and outcomes is what

distinguish it form other research types. This makes the Descriptive-quantitative suitable for the

study since the researchers interpret the information’s rate and describes if there is a difference
among the difficulties of the effect of extracurricular to the academic performance of the

respondents. This gathered information serves as the basis of this study and to interpret data.

Subjects/ Respondents of the Study

This study was conducted at PHINMA UPang College Urdaneta which focuses the

Effect of extra-curricular activities to the academic performance of Grade 12 GHT from

PM class. A.Y. 2018-2019.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researcher used the Rating Scale, specifically made for the study based on the

constructed survey questionnaire. The first part is the Respondent’s Profile. The second part

contains the Survey-Questionnaire for Effects of extracurricular activities to the academic

performance of GRADE 12 GHT PM class of PHINMA UPang College Urdaneta which

determine the level of acceptance of the respondents has the following Rating scale for the

respondents’ response:

Range Verbal Interpretation

4 Strongly Agree

3 Agree

2 Disagree

1 Strongly Disagree
Data collection procedure

First and foremost; the conduct of this study, the researchers came up with the title, by the

guidance and help from their practical research teacher, Ms. Mary Joy Tutor. In order for the

researchers to gather important data needed for the completion of the research, the research used

survey-questionnaire/checklist as data gathering instrument. The survey-questionnaire/checklist

was then formulated, after the formulation of instrument, a letter addressed to the respondents

was made to ask permission for the floating of the survey-questionnaire, noted by the thesis

adviser for recommending approval, Upon permission, the researchers distributed the

questionnaire to the selected respondents and collected them to person data analysis accurately.

Statistical Treatment of the Data

The profile of the respondents was determined through frequency counts and percentage

wherein the following formula was used:

wherein: n = number of the respondents of a certain profile;

N = total number of the respondents.

To determine the level of acceptance in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

or the so-called four fundamental operations of the respondents, average weighted mean was

used with the following formula:

wherein: N = total number of the respondents

f(4) = total score on Strongly Agree

f(3) = total score on Agree

f(2) = total score on Disagree

f(1) = total score on Strongly Disagree

The weighted mean values are interpreted using the following scales:
