Let’s Try This

Look at the following sources of information. Can you name each of them?

What do you think is our lesson for today?

Let’s Study This

Look at the following sources of information.

Notice the similarities and differences between them.

An almanac (also spelled almanack and almanach) is an annual publication that

includes information like weather forecasts, farmers' planting dates, tide tables, and
other tabular data often arranged according to the calendar. Celestial figures and
various statistics are found in almanacs, such as the rising and setting times of
the Sun and Moon, dates of eclipses, hours of high and low tides, and religious
festivals.

Encyclopedias are collections of short, factual entries often written by different

contributors who are knowledgeable about the topic.

There are two types of encyclopedias: general and subject.

1. General encyclopedias provide concise overviews on a wide variety of
topics.

2. Subject encyclopedias contain in-depth entries focusing on one field of

study.

We use these when doing research to find out what has been studied on various
topics and to find bibliographies that point to other relevant research.
