WILSON NEWS

A monthly newsletter brought to you by Glen A. Wilson High School

VOL. 2, ISSUE 1 AUGUST 2018

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to the 2018-19 School Year!

As Principal, one of my many goals is finding new ways to improve

communication with our families. Lots goes on at a public high school so
having multiple opportunities to help families stay informed is something we
strive for at Wilson.

In the month of August, we welcomed families to Wilson for Back to School

Night. This was a great way for parents to meet their students’ teachers,
learn about course expectations, and receive teachers’ contact information.
We have also hosted our first Coffee With The Principal. The format for
Coffee With The Principal is campus updates and celebrations followed by
the main topic. The topic for our first session was school safety. Our next
Coffee With The Principal will be held September 25th at 6:30 PM in the
Media Center. The topic will be How College and Career Readiness is Defined and the new legislation regarding
College Placement Criteria for Math and English. Our counselors have hosted their first GRADE LEVEL PARENT NIGHT,
providing information to our Seniors and their parents. This is typical of our schedule – there is always something
happening at Wilson.

HOW DO YOU FIND OUT WHAT’S GOING ON AT WILSON? There are several ways for parents and students to stay “in
the know”. Announcements are made 4th period every day except Wednesday. On Mondays, our Athletic Director will
deliver announcements via our Public Address System. These announcements will focus on athletics. On Tuesdays and
Thursdays our Associated Student Body (ASB) leaders will deliver the announcements in person to the classroom.
School administrators will deliver the announcements vis the Public Address System on Fridays. Announcements will
be placed on the website so parents and students can reference them at their leisure.

This newsletter is emailed at the end of each month. It is sent to all families that have email addresses listed in Aeries.
If you need an Aeries account or would like to change your email address in Aeries, please contact the Guidance
Office. Over the weekend, school administration will be sending a phone message using School Messenger. The focus
of this message is to highlight events occurring on campus throughout the upcoming week. The school’s website is
also a great way to stay informed. Many teachers and our counselors use the REMIND APP to keep students and
families in the loop regarding class expectations and upcoming events related to college and career. Parents are
encouraged to join REMIND groups to stay informed and encourage your student to take advantage of the
opportunities and resources available to them. In fact, Wilson has an EMERGENCY REMIND group, which allows the
school to get in touch with those who join. Our EMERGENCY REMIND allows for prompt receipt of messages and
information related to school emergencies. The REMIND flyer is attached to this email and provides directions on how
parents and students can join this group.

School safety is very important to the Wildcats. In order to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for our
students and staff, visitors are required to check in and register in the office. Only Wilson students and HLPUSD
employees are permitted on campus during school hours. To visit the campus and classroom, visitors must have prior
administrator approval and be accompanied by an employee. This includes our parking lot. Only those who have
business with the school, or those picking up or dropping of their student are permitted in the parking lot. We are
currently challenged by lunch deliveries. In an effort to manage who is coming onto the campus, food deliveries are
not permitted during school hours. Remember, free breakfast is provided daily in our cafeteria starting at 7:00 AM.

Here are noteworthy events to look out for in September and October. All events are free of charge.

The annual COLLEGE & CAREER FAIR will be held Saturday, September 15th from 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM at Los Altos
High School. This is a great opportunity to visit with college representatives and attend information sessions. For
more information, please check out Wilson’s website http://wihs.hlpschools.org/

The Hacienda La Puente Unified School District OPEN HOUSE will be held Saturday, October 6th from 10:00 AM – 1:00
PM at the Hacienda Heights Community Center. All district schools will be showcasing their programs. There will be
an art show and performances. Come check it out and stop by the Wilson booth to say hello.

On Wednesday, October 10th, all HLPUSD High Schools will administer PSAT exams to all Freshmen and all
Sophomores. The SAT exam will be administered to all Juniors and all Seniors. These exams will be administered
during the school day, free of charge to Wilson students. This is a great opportunity for students at no cost to families.
We are in the process of adjusting our bell schedule to accommodate testing.
On Wednesdays, Wilson observes an alternative bell schedule. Every other week, we have a Late Start, and on the
opposite weeks we follow the Home Room or ROAR schedule. A bell schedule is attached to guide your planning.

WHY DON’T WE HAVE LATE START EVERY WEEK?

The purpose of “Late Start” bell schedules is to allow teachers to collaborate. One of the most significant influences
on student achievement is professional learning communities. Wilson teachers collaborate in professional learning
communities during Late Start Days. During this time, they write standards based common assessments, they
evaluate data, and they discuss effective instructional practices. Last year, we found that one hour per week was not
meeting our needs, so we decided to try meeting less frequently but for a greater length of time. Instead of meeting 4
hours per month, teachers collaborate 3 hours per month, resulting in an increase in instructional time for our
students.

WHAT IS THIS ROAR CLASS ALL ABOUT?

Schools across the country face many challenges when it comes to supporting the needs of students. There are
children that face mental health issues, struggle with emotions that distract them from learning, feel isolated and
disconnected from family, friends, and school, and more. All too often we see these issues manifest in suicidal
ideations, threats to the school, or other detrimental reactions. While Wilson High School is known for preparing
students for College and Career, we are also recognized for having an accepting and inclusive school community. In
order to build upon and maintain this important characteristic of our identity, we have implemented the ROAR (Home
Room) period for 39 minutes, two times per month. ROAR lessons are designed to build trusting relationships so
students feel safe to be themselves and contribute positively to the Wilson community. Research tells us that
students who feel safe and valued at school are more likely to take risks in their learning which helps them grow,
improve, and succeed. Our school values are RESPECT (for yourself and others), OWNERSHIP (of your learning and
others), ADAPTABILITY (in the face of change), and RESILIENCE (when facing challenges). That is why we call home
room R.O.A.R. (the first letters of each of our values). Another component of ROAR is teaching students to analyze
their performance data and to set personal and academic goals. With the support and encouragement of teachers
and peers, we believe every student will be able to reach their potential and successfully transition to adult life after
graduation.

Have a wonderful September Wildcats!!
