Converter for DC Motor Control
1.0 Equipment
• A PC running the Windows NT, 2000, XP operating systems or Windows 7.
• MATLAB version 2011 or higher.
2.0 Objectives
• Study the steady state behavior of DC motor.
• Design/model and simulate the DC motor and its control strategy using MATLAB/Simulink.
• Identify the problems and analyze some performances though the simulations
Pre-Lab
Your task is to model and analyze the steady state behavior of permanent magnet DC motor for fan
applications as shown in Fig. 1. The parameters/specifications of the motor are given as follows:
It can be assumed that the load torque due to air resistance is proportional to the speed, i.e. 𝑇𝐿 = 0.0955𝜔.
Note that, 𝜔 is in rad./s.
𝑇𝐿
𝑉𝑎 DC motor
Based on the parameters given, calculate a desired DC voltage, i.e. 𝑉𝑎 (to be supplied at the armature
terminals of the motor) so that the motor will operate at 1200 rpm. Model and simulate the motor using
MATLAB/Simulink. Compare and discuss the simulation results with that obtained in the calculations.
Problem/Project Guide
A DC voltage of 200 V is supplied by a series of batteries needs to be decreased using TWO approaches
to obtain the desired speed (i.e. at 1200 rpm) of the motor (as modeled in Part 1). This means the dc
voltage of 200 V voltage should be decreased to the desired voltage 𝑉𝑎 , as calculated in Part 1.
At first you will identify the problems in obtaining the desired speed (i.e. at 1200 rpm) of the motor (as
modeled in Part 1) using a conventional approach. Then, you have to apply the basic switching mode of
DC-DC converter to solve/minimize the problems. Comparison of performance analysis through
simulation results obtained in both approaches is required to highlight the minimization of the problems.
A. Conventional Approach:
Figure 2 shows a conventional approach to obtain the desired speed of the motor (as modelled in Part 1).
The DC voltage supplied (𝑉𝑑𝑐 = 200 𝑉) by a series of battery needs to be decreased to get the desired
DC voltage 𝑉𝑎 , as calculated in Part 1 for obtaining the motor speed at 1200 rpm. As can be noticed in
Fig. 2, a rheostat is used to obtain the desired DC voltage 𝑉𝑎 by appropriately changing its resistance
value.
Your task is to calculate the appropriate resistance of the rheostat and identify the major problems of
using this approach. Perform the simulation to highlight the problems.

The switching mode of DC-DC converter is widely used in many industrial application due to its some
advantages (to be proven in this exercise). It can be used either to step-up or to step-down the DC voltage
by producing appropriate pulse width of gate pulse for driving the switching operation of IGBT.
In this exercise, you should complete the following tasks which are as follows; 1) explain the principle
operation of DC-DC converter, 2) design and simulate the basic switching mode of DC-DC converter to
obtain the desired speed, 𝜔 =1200 rpm of the motor, and 3) compare and analyze the performances with
that obtained in the conventional approach.
