FINISHES
of our wrought steel butts. the smaller sizes of strap
and T-hinges and many of the door bolts and other
articles herein described, are made from cold rolled
steel. The process of cold rolling hardens the steel, greatly
increases its tenacity and power of resistance, and gh·es it a
bright smooth surface. This finish we designate in unplated
goods as "bright steel." In plated goods we call it "plan-
ished," to distinguish it from "polished." which is an extra finish
put on our best grades of butts.
Our electro-plated goods of the best grades are \'CT)' hea\·ily
plated by special processes of our own, and are then finished
in Yarious effects of bronze, brass, sih-er, etc., the heaYy coating
serving to effectually protect the steel from ordinary atmospheric
conditions. <)ur plating department is in charge of experts in
that line of work and we can match any finish desired.
We desire to call attention to a new anti-rust finish, which is
mentioned in various places in the following pages. which we call
·•Stanley Sherardized." The process of sherardizing (named
from its im·entor) while comparatiYely new, has been in existence
long enough to demonstrate its worth. \\'e have prefixed the word
"Stanley'' before the word "Sherardized" to indicate that this
finish will have the same careful attention from us that other
·•Stanley" products receive. We anticipate that, as is the case
with galvanizing, many cheap plants will spring up where goods
will be sherardized by treating the complete article. Our products
will be sherardized under our own supervision bt:fore thq arc
assemNed, thus insuring a complete coating of all parts. We
adopted this finish only after long and careful experimenting. and
are convinced that it is as good a protection against rust as it is
possible to get. We guarantee that "Stanley Sherardized" goods
will stand a more severe test than the U. S. Government requires
for its galrnnized work. We heartily recommend this finish for
all articles exposed to the weather.
( ln the opposite page will be found a complete list of our
finishes, with our symbols. and the corresponding symbols of
some other makes.

These butts are highly polished and Hry heavily plated and our standard for quality and
workmanship. They far surpass any other steel butt made. The inner edges of the leaves are
beveled, making a perfect joint. The 3J4-inch and larger have the knuckles in the joint; the
smaller sizes, three. The pins are prevented from risini: in all sizes above 2~-inch by the little
wings on the pin entering corresponding slots in the joint. They can be easily pulled out, but
will not rise under the action of the door. This b a patented feature found only in the Stanley
Butt. They are stamped with the No. 239 in addition to our trade-mark.

without sacrificing strength .

The No. ll42 hinge (8-inch) is for hanging storm doors. Jn the spring, when the storm doors
are taken off, screen doors titted with the No. 1645 hinges can be hung on the same hook.
Both hinges are well made and strong, the corrugation increasing the strength and improving the
appearance. They are interchangeable and sold with or without hooks. They have a 2.J"-inch
throw to bring the door around ilush with the side of brick building where the frame of the

We illustrate herewith a box fitted with Atwood's box hinges. and fasts.
The hinge is so constructed that the leaves are secured to the inside of the box and
lid. and is double jointed so as to allow the lid to swing back and hang perpendicularly
against the back of the box. The fast is applied as shown in the cut. Boxes trimmed
with these hinges and fasts ha,·e no projecting parts to prevent piling upon one
another closely. as the woodwork is tlush on all sides.
These hinges being made to exact size. boxes can be made up in any quantities
with the assurance that the hinges will fit when applied.
