Lesson idea implementation:
The students and the teacher will have a discussion about a famous historical figure and their contributions to
society. The teacher will demonstrate making a Popplet with that historical figure. Then the teacher will
introduce Martin Luther King Jr. and discuss with the students about his contributions to society. The students
will then make their own Popplet on MLK. This will be completed over a week of class, for 30 minutes each
day. Student learning will be assessed by looking at their Popplet and making sure that the student addressed
MLK’s major contributions to society and they discuss his life.
Students can present their Popplet as many students will have found different content. This will give all
students a visual of the material and they will get to hear it. I extended student learning to a higher level by
letting them find the information and letting them choose what they think is important. I will conclude the
lesson by making a chart of what the students tell me are the most important facts. I will give the students
written feedback on the strengths of their Popplet.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that the students I created put the students in charge of what they learn about Martin Luther King Jr. by
letting them research. However by having their classmates share their products they have the opportunity to
learn even more material. To further extend the lesson students can make a Popplet on the civil rights
movement. Students will benefit from Discovery Education, so they can watch videos on Martin Luther King
Jr.
