Based upon the expertise that you have gained as a result of completing
your Words Their Way Inventory and Teaching Assignment, you will build
on this assignment and focus upon one student from your small group who
would particularly benefit from an additional 5-7-session word study tutoring
experience. This student will be the subject of your final case study project.
Using the Words Their Way Spelling Inventories completed thus far as
baseline assessments, plan 5-7 additional sessions of 1-1 instruction for
your student using Words Their Way and what you have learned in class.
You will write a lesson plan for each session and reflect upon each
session in writing. Each narrative reflection should include information about
instructional strategies that seemed to be effective, how each session
impacted plans for the following session, what you learned about your
student today, and what you learned that might help you as a literacy
professional, in general.
After completing your 5-7 sessions of instruction, administer appropriate
components of a Words Their Way Spelling Inventory as post-assessments.
Lesson plans will be included for each session within your case study
project, as well as final conclusions about the effectiveness of your
intervention. Recommendations for subsequent word study must be
included such that they are appropriate for two different audiences; 1)
parent(s) and 2) your student’s classroom teacher. If you are your student’s
classroom teacher, prepare recommendations for another teacher who
works with the student (specialist or resource teacher). These
recommendations must be shared with parent(s) and a teacher and their
reactions must be included, as well.
Your final statements about this student’s learning should summarize his
or her previous understandings within the small group AND provide
extensive details about his/her growth during the 5-7 additional sessions
that you provided.
Read the directions for this assignment above and complete the tasks as
described. Use the rubric/ChecBric below for further guidance.
