Ir is quite possible that Ponce dídn't keep any copy of the fugue, because Segovia wrote on

21 July: "There goes the fugue, pleasc forgive the lapses. Correct it and send it back to
incorpora te it into the variations in order to send them to Strecker". And in the following

undated letter: "1 have finished todav thc fingering of the variations and according to your
desire 1 am sending them to Schott. In a ceuplc of days the fugue will follow". And finally, in

the following letter, also without date: "Schott has alreadv your variations. 1 am waiting for
thc second proofs, after which the work will be printed".
Schott made the publication in 1932 under rhe title Variations sur <Folia de España> et
Fugue, with the theme, 20 variations and the fugue. Ir is not known what happened with the
prelude as finally it was not publisheJ; although it is quite possible that, since it was rccordcd
as Postlude by Segovia, he might havc fcared any legal eonsequence if it had appeared under
the title of prelude in the Sehott edition However, since my aim was the restoratíon of this
work, as mueh as possible, to its primarv conception 1have included the prelude. The fact that
all this material was sent in parts, made the preserving of the manuscript very difficult and
rherefore what was lefr of ir must havc disappcared during thc war.
