A Detailed Lesson Plan in Earth Science

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
A. Classify the types of volcanoes.
B. Recognize the different types of volcanoes.
C. Sketch a simple illustration of a volcano.
.

II. Learning Task

A. Subject Matter: Types of Volcanoes
B. Reference: The Columbia Encyclopedia 5th Edition
C. Materials: Projector and Laptop
D. Concepts: Volcanoes are vents in the earth’s crust through which gases,
molten rock or lava and solid fragments are discharged.
E. Skills: Description and Illustration
F. Value Integration: Workmanship

III. Learning Procedure

Teachers Activity Student’s Activity

A. Motivation

“Good morning class…” “Good morning ma’am…”

“Let us pray first” (One student will lead the

Prayer)

(Checking of attendance) (Students raise their hand

…say present… and say present as the
teacher calls in their name)

“Please perform housekeeping before we start…” Students sweep and

arranged the chairs

“In the Albay province with the cooperation of Albay “Yes ma’am that’s true!”
Governor Joey S. Salceda and the NDRRMC have
evacuated families due to the volcanic activities of Mt.
Mayon.”

“Families all within the 6-kilometer permanent “Yes ma’am. I have seen
danger zone (PDZ) are evacuated to nearby military trucks relocating
schools “ families from Mt. Mayon.”

“Ms. Marinor, what do you picture out of this 6-kilometer “Ma’am, it’s the radius of
permanent danger zone (PDZ)?” the affected area and
steep cone shape of Mt.
Mayon.”
“Are all of the volcanoes on the planet earth similar in
shape?

“For that reason, our topic this morning will be about the
different types of volcanoes.”

B. Lesson Proper

Discussion

Volcano came from the name of Roman God of Fire,

Vulcan.

There are three main types of volcanoes which differ in

shape, size and make-up; the differences partly result
from the different type of eruption.
(Students listens
Cinder Cone, Shield Volcano and Strato Volcano are the attentively)
main types of volcanoes.

Cinder Cone is a volcano type that is steep conical hill

with straight sides. With a size of small less than 300 m
high with cinder materials.

A Shield Volcano have very ge3ntle slope; convex

upward (shaped like a warrior shield). Having a size of
large over 10s of kms across with fluid lava flows(basalt)
material.
(Students listens
attentively)

.
A Strato Volcano have lower gentle lower slopes, but
steep upper slopes; concave upward. Having a size of
large 1-10 km in diameter. Having numerous layers of
lava and pyruplastics.

(Students listens
attentively)

C. Generalization

What are the bases of the classification of the different

volcanoes?

Application(Activity)

Students are to be grouped into three groups. Each group (Students performs the
will be assigned to sketch at least three types of activity)
volcanoes seen in the Philippines.

IV. Evaluation

1. It has a size of Large 1-10 km in diameter.

a. Strato Volcano b. Shield Volcano c. Cinder Volcano d. Hill

2. A shield volcano has?

a. convex upward shape c. concave upward shape
b. convex downward shaped. concave downward shape
V. Assignment
1. What are the parts of a volcano?
