5 Release Notes
Last updated: June 7, 2016

These release notes describe the new features, improvements, and fixed issues in this release. They also provide

For NCM environment requirements, see NCM 7.5 system requirements.

New features and improvements

Read this section for descriptions of the new features and improvements NCM offers in this release, or compare this
release with previous releases of NCM.

Brand new look and feel

The first thing you’ll notice about this release is that the SolarWinds Orion Platform user interface is more modern-
looking. The main menu bar on the top of every page has been reorganized to make navigation faster and easier,
and to save space so there’s more room for data. We've also condensed the Notifications into a drop-down located in
the upper-right corner.

Check out this video (2:44) on using the new UI.

ServiceNow integration
You can now integrate SolarWinds Orion Platform products with the ServiceNow, Inc. incident management
system. With this integration you can:

• Automatically create incidents in ServiceNow based on alerts that trigger in your SolarWinds Orion products

• Synchronize the acknowledgement of SolarWinds alerts and ServiceNow incidents.

• Update, close, and reopen ServiceNow incidents.

Read more about this feature.

More powerful and easier-to-use discovery

As part of the new discovery, you can add an Active Directory (AD) Controller and then select the Organizational
Units (OUs) you want to scan. Using AD for discovery is particularly useful for adding large subnets because
SolarWinds Orion products can communicate directly with the devices instead of scanning every IP address.

Automatic Monitoring imports discovered devices, such as nodes, interfaces, or volumes, based on the monitoring
settings you define. This means you don't have to go through the discovery import wizard after each discovery. Anything
new will be monitored automatically.

Check out this video (1:53) on using the new discovery.

Binary Configuration Support
NCM supports transfer and storage of large binary configuration files. NCM allows you to download, back up, and
restore the binary file sets, which are maintained on a network share. The device template for F5 devices supports
binary files. For other devices with binary file sets, you can modify the appropriate template for your device type. For
more information about the requirements for working with binary configs, see the SolarWinds Network Configuration
Management documentation.

F5 LTM and GTM UCS Configuration Management

Monitor and manage Local Traffic Manager and Global Traffic Manager configurations. Use NCM to back up
these BIG-IP configurations, and monitor LTM and GTM activity with the GTM Object Activity and LTM Object
Activity reports.

New F5 inventory reports

New Web-based reports show status and other details about F5 devices discovered by NCM. For this
information and capacity and activity information, see the F5 Device Inventory report, the F5 Capacity
Planning report, and the LTM and the GTM object activity reports .

New STIG reports for Cisco and F5 devices

Check compliance with DISA Security Technical Implementation Guidelines (STIGs). The Defense Information
Systems Agency (DISA) provides these guidelines as a standard for determining the level of security for
configured devices. Simply add a device_type custom property to specify the appropriate policies for the
report. For details, see "Configuring DISA STIG reports" in the SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager
Administrator Guide.

Other improvements
• User interface improvements: new Getting Started resource; access to
reports from Home Dashboard or Reports tab.

Before you upgrade!
If you are upgrading from a previous version, be aware of the following considerations:
• When upgrading to NCM 7.5 on the same server with DPA installed, the DPAO piece causes issues with
alerting.
• NCM 7.5 integrates with Network Performance Monitor version 12.0.
• NCM 7.5 no longer supports OS Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, 2008, 2008 SP2, and 2008 R2 without SP1.
• If you have written your own code, such as changing SolarWinds .css files or adding .js files, it may be overwritten
with the upgrade. You can learn more about custom code in this article.
• If you have edited resource properties, the All Groups resource may be empty after upgrading to NCM 7.5. This
is a known issue for Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
• When upgrading to NCM 7.5, using the group by feature for custom properties may return no results, and the
data loading may hang or not complete. All regular functionality is unaffected by the issue. This is a known issue for
Orion Platform 2016.1. See Known Issues for work-around.
• Always upgrade NPM first if you have it installed. NPM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
• If you have SAM without NPM, upgrade SAM first. SAM includes platform features to support all Orion products.
• Always use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path.

How to upgrade
Use the following resources for planning and upgrading:
• Use the Product Upgrade Advisor to build your upgrade path. The path provides the exact products and versions to
upgrade in a sequence to the latest versions.
• If you are upgrading:
◦ NCM and other modules (NPM, SAM, NTA, etc.), use the multiple products upgrade guide.
◦ NCM as a single product, use the single product upgrade guide.

Each guide includes checklists and instructions to help you plan and execute your upgrade.
• When you are ready, download the upgrade package from the SolarWinds Customer Portal.

Known issues

Orion Web Console inaccessible after installing NCM

Issue: Access to Orion Web Console is blocked after NCM installation if the SQL account you have assigned to your
Orion Platform database has not been configured with appropriate permissions.

Work-around: Create a new SQL account with required permissions as detailed in this knowledge base article.

Node Discovery not adding nodes after upgrade

Issue: Node Discovery may not always successfully add nodes after an upgrade. This issue results when upgrading
from NCM 7.3.x to current versions.

Work-around: If you encounter this issue, following an NCM upgrade, add a new Connection Profile (select "Use for
auto detect"), and then re-run the node discovery.

Error connecting to devices with SSH-only login

Issue: NCM is not able to connect to certain devices with SSH-only login, receiving this error from the server: "Invalid
username or password".

Work-around: See this Knowledge Base article for the workaround to this issue.

Copyright © 1999-2017 SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. All rights reserved worldwide. No part of this document may be reproduced by any
means nor modified, decompiled, disassembled, published or distributed, in whole or in part, or translated to any electronic medium or other
means without the written consent of SolarWinds. All right, title, and interest in and to the software and documentation are and shall remain 14
the exclusive property of SolarWinds and its respective licensors.
Large reports export limitation
Issue: Unable to export large reports, such as vulnerability reports, that have more than 50,000 items.

Work-around: Open the report for editing, choose Edit Table in the Content section, and filter the results to 50,000 or
less.

Unable to manage pollers

Issue: If you have NCM installed as a stand-alone product, you cannot manage pollers in the SolarWinds Orion Web
Console's Threshold and Polling Settings.

Node Groups concept not supported

Issue: In versions 7.4 and later, NCM does not support the concept of Node Groups. You might notice that Web-based
reports look different in comparison with NCM 7.3 and before.

Work-around: To restore the previous display, edit the relevant report and add the appropriate property.

Drag-and-drop functions may not work properly

Issue: Resources such as Node List, Search NCM, Inventory Details, Compare Configs, Download, and all charts, stop
working when dragged and dropped.

Work-around: Refreshing the page should resolve this issue.

Issues after uninstalling NCM

Issue: After uninstalling NCM, you might encounter a problem when you open the SolarWinds Orion Web Console, and
charts you export to PDF may not display the correct time range or colors.

Work-around: If you encounter this issue, open the folder on your SolarWinds Orion web server, and remove all NCM
files.

The All Groups resource is empty after an upgrade

Issue: The All Groups resource is empty after an upgrade if you’ve edited the resource properties to group by a property
before the upgrade.

Work-around: Edit the resource and save your changes.
