TITLE: EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I - Il
DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs journey-level work in the
maintenance, repair and overhaul of a wide variety of automotive, construction and
other gasoline or diesel-powered equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Equipment Mechanic II is distinguished from the | Grade Level by having lead
supervision over a crew of two or more subordinates, or has attained a degree of
proficiency and versatility sufficient to warrant a merit increase in accordance with
established guidelines.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
‘* Inspects and tests equipment to locate and determine the extent of damage or
malfunction;
Determines corrective steps to be taken;
Repairs, overhauls or replaces engines, transmissions and differentials;
Rebuilds or replaces defective parts;
Tunes engines using electronic engine analyzers;
Replaces and adjusts fuel, electrical, cooling, and emission control systems or
components thereof,
Replaces defective chassis parts;
‘Overhauls mechanical, hydraulic, booster, and vacuum systems;
Installs and repairs accessories;
Assists in building truck bodies and other maintenance equipment;
Repairs minor equipment body damage;
Observes safety rules and regulations;
Performs other related duties as required.

DESCRIPTION:
| Under general supervision, a Vehicle Technician II performs skilled work at the joumey level in the
diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel vehicles, motorcycles,
and other equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
> The Vehicle Technician Il is a skilled, journey level classification in the Vehicle Technician series.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of assigned duties and
responsibilities. This classification differs from the Vehicle Technician I in the skill level required
and the complexity of assigned projects based on knowledge of the City’s equipment, standards, and
procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following functions are typical for this classification, Incumbents may not perform all of the
listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set
forth below to address business needs and changing business practices
Lubricate and change oil on all types of light and heavy vehicles and construction equipment,
‘Mount, balance, change, and repair tires and wheels.
Clean and/or replace filters as necessary; perform regular maintenance on vehicles & equipment,
including "A", "B", "C", and "D" level services as defined by Fleet & Facility Services.
As assigned, perform safety inspections, including California Highway Patrol "BIT" inspections on
applicable vehicles and equipment.
