Task
In this task you are required, to create a Timeline in the form of a comic strip that traces the
development of man from nomadic times to the beginnings of civilisation. Your cartoon strip will
start with the geographical origins of human beings and nomadic lifestyles (Cell ONE) and finish
with civilizations (CELL SIX). Cells TWO to FIVE show the process of the change represented by
Cells ONE and SIX. These cells (TWO to FIVE) should have FOUR of the following as themes. It is
your CHOICE as to which you use. You are also free to combine two or more of these themes into
one cartoon cell.

 Effects of climate change.

 Out of Africa.
 New discoveries.
 Human curiosity, imagination and ingenuity
 Human story-telling.
 Human relationships.
 Development of sedentary lifestyles.
 The development of pottery.
 The development of agriculture
 The domestication of animals and its significance.
 Law and justice.

Your comic strip may be animated and, when complete, will answer the BIG question;

How did human beings go from living in bands in Africa to living in Civilizations around the
world?

This question is about CHANGE, CONTINUITY, PERSPECTIVE, EMPATHY, NOMADISM AND

CIVILISATION and these concepts should be reflected in your final communication piece.

A. Synthesizing – SYNTHESIS TABLE

a. You will SYNTHESIZE all that you know and plan your cells. This will require you
to plan each cell – describe, sketch and create.

B. Communicating – CARTOON STRIP

b. The final product will be a cartoon strip illustrating the rise of man. It can take the
form of a wall poster, a comic book where each page is a cell, an animated film or a
PowerPoint where each slide is a cell. You can draw your images or turn it into a
collage. Each cell is accompanied by an appropriate caption and/or dialogue. The
captions will be the themes you have chosen for each cell.

When submitted, your final communication piece will be in a state that is publishable.

Reflect and Review – ask yourself the questions, tick the appropriate response, state what action is required if any and tick when done.

Review Question YES NO Action Required Done

Do each of my cells have a CAPTION and DIALOGUE?

Do my cells tell a COHERENT story?

Does the story I am telling answer the BIG question?

Does my story have WELL DEFINED characters?

Have I planned/sketched what will be in each cell?

Have I decided HOW I will construct my cartoon?

Have I access to the materials and/or technology I need to construct my
cartoon?
