(Sampling Distribution of mean when n=2)

1. Draw all possible samles of size 2 without replacement from the following
population : 2,4,6,8,10.
Calculate the means and variances of the samples and of the population .
Discuss the results .
Ans : μ=6 , σ2=8

2. Assume that a population consists of 7 similar containers having the following

weights (kilograms) :
9.8 , 10.2 , 10.4 , 9.8 , 10.0 , 10.2 , and 9.6
a) Find the mean μ and the standard deviation σ of the given population .
b) Draw random samples of 2 containers without replacement and calculate the
mean weight X of each sample .
c) Form a frequency distribution of X and a sampling distribution of X.
d) Find the mean and standard deviation of the sampling distribution of X.
Ans : μ=10.0kg , σ = 0.262kg
μX=10.0 kg , σX=0.17 kg

3. A sample of size n=2 is to be randomly selected without replacement from a

population that has N=5 items whose values are 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12
a) Find the sampling distribution of the sample mean ,X.
b) Calculate the mean and the standard deviation of X ,and verify that

Ans : μ=6 , σ2 = 18
μX=6 , σX=1.732 ,Verification of result

4. A finite population consists of the numbers 2, 4 and 6

a) Form the sampling distribution of X , when random sample of size 2 are drawn
with replacement .
b) Verify the result .

(Sampling Distribution of mean when n=3)

Q1- A population consists of three values 3,6,and 9 .

a)Draw all possible with replacement samples of size 3.

b)Take mean of each sample
c) Make sampling distribution of sample mean .
d) Find mean and standard deviation of the sampling distribution of sample mean.
e) Compute mean and standard deviation of population .
f) Verify the results.
Q2- A population consist of 3,6,9,12,15
(i)Calculate the sample means for all possible random samples of size 3 that can be
drawn from this population by without replacement.
(ii)Verify the results.

Q3- A population consists of six numbers 3,6,9,12,15 and 18.Consider all possible
samples of size three numbers , which can be drawn without replacement from this
population. Find :
(i)The mean of the population .
(ii)The standard deviation of the population
(iii)The mean of “sampling distribution” of the mean.
(iv)The “standard Error “

Q4- Draw all possible samples of size 3 with replacement from the population 3 and 9
then show that
(i)Population mean =mean of sample’s mean
1. (ii)standard error =Pop.S.D/n
