April 1- The Fool's Day

8/14/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Come April 1 and we are ready to play pranks on our family and friends. April 1, as
we all know is April Fools’ Day or All Fools’ Day. The day is celebrated with playing
harmless pranks and jokes on all and sundry. The person who is the butt of the joke
is called the April fool and the person playing the prank shouts ‘April fool’ in glee. It
is a day of fun and laughter and has gained prominence since the 19th century. April
1 is not a public holiday in any country.

The Origin
Several stories surround the April Fools’ Day. According to some people, the
association of playing tricks and April 1 can be traced to “The Canterbury Tales” by
Geoffrey Chaucer (1392). In the book, “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale”, the proud rooster is
fooled by a fox. There is also a reference by Chauntecleer- syn March bigan, which
means ‘since March begin’ thirty days and two. Chaucer may have meant 32 days
after March, which is May 2. But many readers mistook the line to mean March 32 or
April 1.

Another story claims that April Fools’ Day was meant to celebrate the changing of
the seasons around spring. The changing of the season is celebrated at the
beginning of April in many cultures.

8/14/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

There has been a sudden spurt in awareness of eco-friendly products and lifestyle.
Numerous NGOs across the globe are propagating the ‘Green Movement’. Well,
Poland takes the credit of already having adopted eco-friendly infrastructural
solutions.

We all face difficulty riding a two-wheeler at night. Poland has offered a solution to
its cyclists by developing a glowing pathway.

A track 100 metres long was built by the construction company, TPA Instytut Badan
Technicznych in Pruszkow, a town in Poland. In an amazing display of genius, the
company used synthetic elements to ‘charge’ the asphalt with sunlight. The path
glows a striking fluorescent blue in the dark.

The synthetic material once charged during the day has the capacity to glow for up
to 10 hours at a stretch. The road radiates a bright blue the whole night and gets re-
charged in the sunlight during the daytime.

T-Shirt- A Stylish and Trendy Garment

https://www.theultimateknowledge.com/article/article_detail/5/2278 1/4
8/7/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Talk of a garment that is comfortable, trendy and stylish and the name that comes
to mind is a T-shirt. It is perfect for any weather. Let us discover a little more in
detail about a T-shirt.

A T-shirt is made up of a unisex fabric and it derives its name from the ‘T’ shape of
the body and sleeves. It generally has a round neckline, called the ‘crew neck’ with
no collar and short sleeves.

The Beginning of the T-shirt

Do you know that T-shirt was initially an undergarment for men? Of course now it a
style statement in itself. It is worn as a fashionable piece of garment by both the
genders. In fact, the T-shirt is constantly evolving; its fabric, cut, length and the
design printed on it keep changing according to the demands of the fashion
industry.

The Early T-shirt

The T-shirt originated from a garment known as ‘Union suits’ or ‘long underwear’,
which was in vogue in the 19th century in the New York City. It was a simple piece
of clothing with buttons in the front. The T-shirt was designed by dividing the top
and the bottom halves.

The ‘long underwear’ and now a T-shirt were modified into slip-on garments without
buttons and were issued by the U.S. Navy in the United States around the time of
the Spanish–American War of 1898. The clothing was white in colour and of cotton
fabric. It had a crew-neck and short-sleeves and was supposed to be worn under a
uniform.

The destiny of the present-day T-shirt saw a twist when in 1904 the Cooper
Underwear Company sold it as “bachelor undershirts”. It displayed a tagline that
read; “No safety pins — no buttons — no needle — no thread”.

Green Tea: Not Everyone’s Cup of Tea!

https://www.theultimateknowledge.com/article/article_detail/4/2281 1/4
8/7/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Fashion dominates every aspect of the modern life, including what we eat!
Advertisements and the right marketing techniques influence all the consumer
products. Unfortunately, health takes a back-seat.

Tea is a beverage that is all-popular. The market is flooded with different brands and
types. In the last decade or so, green tea has become a so-called healthy tea and
fashion statement. While green tea does have numerous health benefits, it may not
be suitable for everyone.

Each person has a unique constitution and his body reacts to the same food intake
differently than another’s. Green tea is believed to interfere with certain
medications.

But, a controlled consumption of green tea is harmless. Let us learn a little about
the side-effects of green tea.

Headache – Green tea contains a high level of caffeine and excess intake of green
tea can cause chronic headache patterns.

Anaemia – Did you know that green tea interferes with the iron absorption by the
body? Excess of green tea prevents the absorption of iron by the body, while may
result in the medical condition of anaemia, due to iron deficiency in the body.

Diabetes – One needs to watch out for sugar if he/she consumes green tea. The
person is at a risk of diabetes.
https://www.theultimateknowledge.com/article/article_detail/4/2281 2/4
8/7/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Disturbed Sleep – Caffeine interferes with sleep and as green tea contains high
level of caffeine, it disrupts sleep leading to increased anxiety, nervousness and
sleeplessness.

Osteoporosis – Green tea adversely affects the calcium in the body, flushing it out
by way of urine. Calcium is essential for the bones. With age, the body experiences
reduction in calcium, resulting in weaker bones. So intake of green tea will make the
situation worse. If a person cannot stop drinking green tea, then he/she must take
sufficient calcium supplements.

Change in heart rate – The caffeine present in green tea may cause the heart
muscles to contract even while resting, resulting in irregular or increased heart rate.

Stomach issues – Caffeine present in green tea can cause diarrhoea. Caffeine
increases the movement of food in the digestive system and the frequency of bowel
movement due to stimulation of the colon muscles. The quickened movement of
food through food pipe may also result in nausea and vomiting.

Dizziness – Intake of green tea reduces the blood circulation in the brain, which
may cause the person to experience dizziness.

Green tea does have health benefits, but it would not be a bad idea to consult a
medical specialist before introducing it in your diet.

PIZZA: Parantha’s Elder Brother Who Lives

Abroad

https://www.theultimateknowledge.com/article/article_detail/5/2298 1/5
8/14/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Isn’t the heading absolutely spot on? Well, this is not about paranthas which is
stuffed bread, but about pizza which is, well just a pizza!

Born in Italy, feeding the world

Without doubt it is an Italian food. But currently, Italy doesn’t even feature in the
top three pizza consuming countries! That’s because of this fast food’s ability to
blend in with any cuisine. Pizza is nothing but a yeasted flatbread and anything and
everything on the top. We’re not kidding. The simplest one can be topping the
flatbread with cheese and tomato sauce. But there’s no end to the number of
toppings and flavours you can add on it. This flexibility of pizza made it a global food
within the span of a few decades.

Yes, a few decades. Even though pizza has been around for centuries, its pan world
popularity increased only after the Second World War when the Allied troops
stationed in Italy relished its taste and brought back the recipes to their respective
countries. Within no time, the pizza culture spread throughout the world like fire in a
forest.

Are you Italian? Yes!

https://www.theultimateknowledge.com/article/article_detail/5/2298 2/5
8/14/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Remains of flattened bread and tools for making pizza (probably) were excavated
from the island of Sicily by archaeologists who concluded that the remains date back
to 3000 years. That’s quite old, isn’t it!

The word ‘pizza’ might not be that old. A Latin document belonging to the year 997
AD bears the earliest reference to this word. The document was written in Gaeta, a
small Italian village by the son of a feudal lord promising 12 pizzas to the local
bishop as an annual homage.

The biggest taste enhancer came in the sixteenth century in the form of tomatoes
which arrived from the newly discovered continent of South America. Tomato sauce
revolutionised the pizza and was soon accompanied with different vegetables,
condiments and meats as well.

Margherita Pizza
The first known exclusive pizza was the Margherita, made by the famous Raffaele
Esposito who is credited with revolutionising pizza among the Italian folks. In the
nineteenth century, pizza was generally a poor man’s food who would put any
ingredient that might otherwise go waste on the bread and make it a pizza!

In 1889, Italian King Umberto I and his wife Queen Margherita visited Naples and
Esposito was called upon to treat them with pizza. He prepared the pizza using
green basil, mozzarella cheese and ripe red tomatoes, thus signifying the green,
white and red colours of the Italian flag!

The dish was greatly commended and became an instant hit. Till date, the same
ingredients are used in this pizza, which is still called Margherita Pizza, named after
Queen Margherita.

Brain- The Pain-free Part of Human Body

https://www.theultimateknowledge.com/article/article_detail/3/2272 1/4
8/14/2018 The Ultimate Knowledge

Can you imagine undergoing a surgery without anesthesia? Unbelievable though it

may sound, it is because the brain apparently has no pain receptors, and therefore
cannot feel any pain.

The brain is the nerve centre for detecting pain. But since it does not have any pain
receptors, it cannot feel pain. This explains brain surgery without anesthesia. Brain
surgery without anesthesia also aids the surgeons to ensure that the delicate
procedure does not impact vision or motor control functions.

Interpreting the Signals of Pain

The body has special sensory neurons called ‘nociceptors’ that tell the body - “this
feels bad!”. A nociceptor is a sensory receptor for painful stimuli. There are several
types of nociceptors; a few detect harmful chemicals (like capsaicin, the ‘ow’-
inducing ingredient in chilli peppers), the others indicate harmful temperatures (like
the surface of a hot stove) and still others detect strain in the body (the strain that
the tendons of your finger feel when you strike a piano key too forcefully).

Let us consider a situation where the toe hits against something. How does the
message of the stubbed toe pass to the brain? The message travels from the foot to
the leg all the way to the spinal cord. There it is conveyed to neurons having fibres
that move up all the way to the brain. The fibres, in the form of bundles travel
through the brainstem to the brain itself where the message ‘ping-pongs’ between
the thalamus, hypothalamus and a number of other areas that scientists are just
beginning to discover. The electrical communication between these regions results in
the feeling of pain.
