Suppose that a cup of soup cooled from 90 degree Celsius
to 60 degree Celsius in 10 minutes in a room whose temperature
was 20 degrees Celsius. Use Newton¶s law of cooling
to answer the question.

How much longer would it take the soup to cool to 35 degree Celsius?

dT/dt = -t(T-Ts)

dt / (T ± Ts) = -k(dt)

ln | T ± TS | = -kt + c

e ln | T ± Ts| = e ±kt ( ec)

T ± Ts = e ±kt (ec)

At t = 0, T = T0

T0 ± Ts = e0 ( ec)

T ± Ts = T0 ± Ts e-kt

60 ± 20 = (90 ± 20) e-k(10min)
40 = 70e-k(10)
4/7 = e-10k

ln(4/7) = -10klne

k = .0560

35 ± 20 = ( 60 ± 20) e -.0560t

15 = 40e-.0560t

.375 = e-.0560t

ln .375 = -.0560t lne

t = 17. 515 min longer

The time that it takes to cool the soup to 35 degree Celsius is
17.515 minutes longer. Notice how the question is asking
For how long and not for a specific time, which greatly
affects the problem. To change this I plugged in the
final temperature in the beginning of the problem
for time 10 min. This is where I found k. once
I figured this out I then solved for the desired temperature of
35 degree Celsius but instead of 90 degrees being the
intial temperature, I plugged in 60 degrees to
figure out how long it took.
0 60
5 50.231
10 42.848
15 37.268
20 33.051
25 29.864
30 27.455
35 25.634
To figure out the problem I needed to first derive
Newton¶s formula. Once I did that, I then punched
in the appropriate numbers to find k. After I found
k I then solve the time it took to reach the desired final
temperature. The graph shows the gradual down change in
temperature as time goes up. The table shows the
temperature as time increases.
